I'm a native Spanish speaker who's been speaking English for a long time and thanks to your channel now I understand a little bit better the struggle English speakers have to go through when they learn Spanish. Our language is definitely not easy! Being able to see Spanish from your English speaker perspective is also quite fascinating for me because I’m very interested in laguages in general so I enjoy watching. So yeah, great videos and very well explained, sigue así :)

Thank you for a great message. I'm glad you find my videos entertaining and helpful. To me, learning Spanish, goes hand in hand with teaching English. I was always around Spanish speakers learning English and I was learning Spanish, so we'd always have to explain stuff to each other. I traveled for many months with Spanish speakers. So we really had time to talk about stuff. We can learn so much about the other language when helping people in our own! Crazy world. I love it ! thanks for the message.

It's good how you anticipate and cover every detailed question that arises as I watched this. For example comparing 'sobre' and 'en' and contrasting the nuances between them. Great video! I feel like prepositions (especially how they correctly combine with verbs) also become internalized after listening/reading over and over and over and over and over...

Jordan, Congratulations! Solid explanations, great examples. As a native Spanish teacher myself I would really want to add this little detail about the preposition 'a' which I didn't see in your video: it can also mean "at" here: "don't throw the ball at your dad" = "no le tires la pelota a tu papá ". I learned from my mistakes in Canada, if you have more similar examples great! Hope this helps :D

Desde being used for "from" and "since" actually makes a lot of sense when you think about it meaning "coming from" a specific origin in time or space. Estoy desde los Estados Unidos - > I am coming from the US. He vivido aquí desde Abril -> I have lived here coming from April.

Did you ever watch a movie that was obviously in English but the actors were from England, Ireland or Scotland? Did you ever feel like subtitles would help because of their heavy accents? I've always felt that that is what it must be like for native Spanish speakers when they hear a gringo speaking with a gringo accent. I know the most important thing is to just start talking but an authentic Spanish accent is helpful. NOT a hater, just an observation. You are a very good teacher👍🏽

great man, this has helped me a lot... can you explain the difference between tras & despues de, does tras also means after/behind?
@meister2ed
@meister2ed 8 жыл бұрын
"Tras" indeed means "after". It can be used for time and position. Celebramos tras la victoria. El carro está tras el camión. "Después de" also means after but with bit different. It also is used for time, but when talking about position, it has to be in motion. Celebramos después de la victoria. Ana va después de Laura-Ana comes after Laura. As you see, Ana and Laura are not static, thus "después de" can be used. "El carro está después del camión" sounds weird and probaly won't be understood.

@elspanishdude
@elspanishdude 8 жыл бұрын
+Koustav Chowdhury When you focus on the difference, it's complicated. But as this video illustrated most of the time, there are no complications. Just real straight forward vocabulary. When you want to say "after" in most situations, you can say "tras" or "después de". When you hear either one, just picture "after" every time. If you say the "wrong one" in a situation, you'll be understood fine. And as you get better, you'll start to feel these nuances naturally, without studying them and without focusing on them. As long as you're doing other stuff like talking, reading, watching, listening, practicing etc. Even from example from a grammar book you can get the feel for this. So memorize them both as "after" and go on with your life. NO STRESS. They both mean after. And do your thing. Naturally you'll FEEL the difference later. And it doesn't matter in the meantime =)
@koustav1293

Sure thing man, it is all about practice, ur video has helped me a lot to clear most of the doubts, you know you are absolutely correct that there is no point of memorizing each and every prepositions which is out there in Spanish we should focus on only those things which does the job 80 to 90% of the time, even in English there might be billions of word which we do not require in our everyday conversation, the most frequently used words helps in conversing reading writing or comprehending and I believe this holds true for any language but the only problem for me is that being at India there is hardly anyone who speaks Spanish or rather any other foreign language. studying grammar and and talking to the mirror is hugely different than living eating and sleeping that language. It might take some more time for me to to be fluent in Spanish but gringo espanol is there to help me out.

Fantastic videos. The Bonus Video exercise was incredibly helpful! Here is more info. from StudySpanish.com: If the comparative is followed by a number, use de rather than que. Hay menos de veinte alumnos en la clase. There are fewer than twenty students in the class. Él tiene más de noventa años. He is more than ninety years old. (Literally: He has more than ninety years.) Note that when the sentence is negative, que is used even with numbers, to convey the meaning “only.” Tengo más de cinco dólares. (I have more than five dollars.) but No tengo más que cinco dólares. (I only have five dollars.)

thanks. i always thought i could use despues just like after. just to be clear if i wanted to say "we can speak after class" i would have to say " podemos hablar despues de la clase" instead of just "podemos hablar despues la clase" right? i have been trying to learn when to use de in sentences that doesn't seem to need it but it makes much more sense if i think of after as despues de. Thanks =)
@elspanishdude
@elspanishdude 8 жыл бұрын
+Nick Peebles You are correct. You'd have to use "de" in that case. And most cases. You can go without the "de" at the end of a sentence. Like "We'll see each other after?" -- "¿Nos vemos después?" But yeah, just memorize "after" is "después de" and you'll be good.

It is!! Even for me, when it's my native language. I played w/ French a little, and I ended up learning it via Spanish, it was just easier that way for me. Glad you're watching! Where are you from?

Originally i`m from Russia but currently i temporary live in Czech Rep). So it turns up that you can speak French as well as English/Spanish&? awesome! Russian grammar looks like the Spainish one..We also have conjugation of verbs depending on gender. It makes a little bit easier to learn Spanish. Many people (include me) have a struggle with pronouns - lo, la, le, les etc)) However i guess it`s much more effortless to study Spanish for English native speakers (not to mention for Italian native speakers). Both English/Spanish have plenty of common words that looks like one for another). So i`d reccomend people to learn Italian after they have learnt Spanish. My coworker began to study Italian. Watching after her i realized i`m able to understand many words without looking on dictionary.

The difference between flying "sobre" or "en" New York is the difference between a normal flight and 9/11. Don't cause another 9/11 kids.

I know we all do our best with pronunciation but for some reason it really bothers me that you pronounce “con” like the word “cone” in english 😭
