Good query performance is important and that’s why Prometheus indexes incoming data. In this talk we will dive into how Prometheus indexes incoming data. We will aim to give you a visual understanding of the on-disk layout and data structures used to store samples. The aim is to develop an intuitive understanding of data access complexity and costs. This will inform you about how to manage cardinality and how PromQL queries leverage the index to speed up query execution.
