In this episode I am joined by Keith Nester, a former Protestant pastor who was in ministry for more than 20 years before converting to Catholicism. In this video, Keith shares his conversion story, and we dialogue about Protestant and Catholic misconceptions, how Protestants and Catholics can dialogue productively and fruitfully, as well as what Protestants and Catholics can learn from one another. This was an absolute blast, and I think you're going to love it. Whether you're Protestant, Catholic, somewhere in between, or you have no skin in the game, I think you'll benefit from hearing Keith's powerful story and gaining insight into how we can disagree civilly, while not giving up our convictions.
After watching this, I'm sure you're asking, "how can I learn more about Keith and what he's up to?" I get it. Me too. Use the link below to stay up to date with Keith's ministry and to check out his new book:

My family is catholic and I was baptized a few days after I was born. But I came to understand my faith much more after reading conversion stories, mainly from protestants to catholicism. I love the way they discover so many beautiful things like the mass, Eucharist, the life of saints, and so on. As Scott Hamn once mentioned, sometimes we need an immigrant to make us realize the beauty of our country, and sometimes Catholics need converts to remember them the beauty of their faith.

I agree 100% with your comment @Daniel Wey. I began watching The Journey Home on EWTN with Marcus Grodi. Ever since then, I have searched for more conversion stories. That’s how I came to find Keith. And about immigrants, it’s a very true fact! People would rather travel out of the country instead of visiting our beautiful Canadian sites. The same goes for Catholics who leave the Church. They see what isn’t in the Catholic Church in other denominations and end up believing it’s better than the Catholic Church.

It’s funny, one of the things my mom told me and I passed on was the sentiment of “if you don’t marry a good, practicing Catholic, find yourself a solid, practicing Jewish person”. So many of the traditions were transferred and transmuted. If you ever want to listen to an interesting pair of stories, on the Coming Home program on EWTN there are the conversion stories of a Jewish brother and sister to Catholicism . The brother is actually a Catholic priest.

I love my Christian brothers and sisters. I listen to Catholic and Protestant podcasts and can say thank God the Catholics are tradition centric, thank God they've preserved the traditions of the early church fathers etc. Catholic Mass may not be my cup of tea but I don't frown upon Catholics as the seeds of love were planted in me at an early age by Catholic nuns. So when the proud hearts surrender the hope of fighting for false supremacy, and seek to love the brethren as commanded. Then the true work of the Holy Spirit will finish the work in the vineyard. Austin did bring up an aspect he noticed about catholics. They do not seem to make an effort or have a regard for evangelizing as the gospel asks. This is a rather complex aspect to understand. How to answer this so that protestants understand .... catholics are taught from day one that we must imitate Jesus Christ in his love and charity and participate in Christ’s suffering and death at the cross. Catholics engage in deep prayer to reflect on who Christ is and how our mind and body can be emptied of sin and ego. In this way, the church as the Body of Christ is a saving activity. This means our life as Christians is meant not for ourselves but for others at the same time. So ... what do catholics do ... they are constantly actualizing their faith by soup kitchens, giving shelter, caring for the sick, etc etc. St Francis and Mother Teresa were severe care givers to the point of their own deep starvation and suffering. What do catholic kids do to learn about christ and about their faith. They volunteer to help others. What this means is if someone attends mass, shows for lecture, sleeps in the back of the church (the homeless) or hangs out at all the soup kitchens and soaks up all the goodies for 10 years catholics just don’t think of evangelizing in terms of preaching or asking for converts or demanding a secular catholics attend mass. Catholics know their discipleship is their example as a good Christian.

We in the church as a whole has different lay obligations. Even though we are one Church, each of us has different responsibilities. Not everyone is responsible for evangilization or preaching. Even Paul himself has been clear about this issue. 1 Corinthians 1:17 "For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect." St. Paul was sent to preach therefore that was his duty. Some are given with other responsibilities Ephesians 4:11 "And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;" Therefore not everyone is entitled for preaching. St. Paul even clarify this Romans 10:15 "And how can they preach unless they are sent?" Again, catholics are not obliged to preached the gospel. We all have different calling and vocation. Some for pro-creation, some for temporalities, some for ministries and so on. But one thing we should always bear in our minds. Despite this different callings, we are all united as one, bounding together in prayers, faith, hope and love..

@@GospelSimplicity, You're right... Just want to add Catholics are Eucharistic Vessels, to give Jesus to others out of the Body of Christ. He becomes one in us and uses our humanity to touch others. ( We are bad at that because the spiritual warfare is too great).. but even a simple faithful catholic, just being faithful gives a lot to the world. This idea I heard in the talks of Marino Restrepo from Colombia who is considered as St. Paul of our century.. He had an Illumination of Conscience in a cave during his near death experience when he was kidnapped by guerrillas and he reverted back to faith. If possible, please do check out his talks. Thanks!

I think that the Catholics who are knowledgeable about the faith are a lot more confident in sharing it. The problem is that there are so many Catholics (especially cradle Catholics) who don't understand the faith near as well as they should. Another thing is that I think a lot of Catholics are timid because of all of the anti-Catholicism we encounter, especially when we are open about our faith.
@thebestofmae
@thebestofmae 3 жыл бұрын
@@tessa7413 totally true! I'm a cradle Catholic. And you were just describing who I was like for 21 years. Thank God for Apologetics, Fulton Sheen, Steubenville Conferences, Peter Kreeft and all the Saints that helped me revive my faith in a more beautiful and glorious ways. As I continue to read the life of the Saints, I now understand more fully why the Church highly regarded them. As Peter Kreeft said once in his talk, (non-verbatim) the Saints know the Scriptures better than the theologians because they're so close to the heart of Christ which is what the entire Scripture is all about. At that time when I heard it I could understand it intellectually but not yet fully. As I recall my own conversion of the heart (if you will), the reason that I got so interested to dive deeper into what really the Church teaches and the richness of the deposit of faith aside from Sunday masses and occasional confession was the witness of the people that I met when I moved to another city for work. There I met amazing people who were living the faith passionately, talking about Jesus as if they're so close to each other, they get His humor in certain situations, and the boldness of how they live their Christian life in the midst of the secular corporate world. That is what awakened my heart from lukewarmness. I can't help but be curious on how they've come so close to Jesus and so brave in this modern world of relativism where you just shut up to not offend anyone or not get into arguments. So when I see people discounting the Saints' witness because "we idolize them" I feel so sad because they're missing a lot.

When I converted to Catholicism over 25 years ago - the Latin Mass wasn’t so readily available. At that time I loved going to Mass - but preferred traditional liturgy and frequently worshipped in the eastern rites of the Church. Now that the Latin mass is so much more readily available, I currently attend the traditional Latin rite on a weekly basis. I find worshiping in the Latin rite which is saturated with scripture - completely draws my soul to the trinity like nothing I’ve ever experienced. The excellence and holiness of the rite Is difficult to put into words. Simply put it’s the most beautiful thing this side of heaven!

If Protestants and Catholics came together it would be so powerful. All the wisdom of community building and fellowship that Protestants have learnt would be an amazing gift to the Church, their emphasis and knowledge of Scripture and Evangelization. Catholicism has the Real Presence in the Eucharist, Scripture and the Church and the full truth and richness. Great interview 😊 As a cradle Catholic - I benefit so much from these types of conversations. My generation received poor catechesis (soon after Vatican 2) and subsequently find myself continuing to learn. I’ve definitely benefited from the hard work that converts to Catholicism have endured in their journey to the faith including Steven Ray, Scott Hahn, Jimmy Aiken, Keith 😊 and others. It helps to have the internet and easy access to such. Yup - as Catholics, we can be unto ourselves … really lacking in our love to evangelize, welcome newcomers and freely communicate about the Lord & our Catholic faith. Now that parishes are using Alpha, Renew and other great programs - hopefully we can begin to shift and demonstrate the type of zeal that we all love so much in many of our Protestant brothers & sisters.

You can imagine how many people to one priest and all the responsibilities they have on the daily preparing for mass, the anointing of the sick, daily mass, confessions etc… As a long life Catholic I understand how they cannot drop everything and call someone who wants to come into the Catholic faith. Most of the priest not only in my parish but in my town are sleep walking most of the time. So please understand them.

Jesus understand that as embodied souls we need physical realities to help us. Confessing to a priest not only means we are reconciled with God but we are reconciled with God's family, the Church. Our sins whether by commission or omission hurt others and damage the body of Christ. So we need forgiveness from God and from His people for healing to occur.

Hi Austin! I really want to thank you for making this amazing video! There are so many angry and hateful videos on this topic I'm Italian and obviously Catholic and six years ago I came to the u.s. as an exchange student. Since my host family was protestant, I attended service for a whole year in their Methodist church and it was one of the best experiences of my life! After that I obviously questioned my faith and my believes but I decided to remain Catholic! Coming back to Italy though I felt the need to fight for Christian unity because the love for God that we share is greater than any theological difference that divides us! So I joined a local taizè community and by going to a couple of their international youth events I was finally able to have discussions with people of different Christian professions and to find common ground! So again thank you for doing the same here on KZbin!!

Friends of mine, Christians in earnest who belong to a Baptist congregation, began addressing our divergent approaches to Christ in the Eucharist, against the Baptist communion view. One thing that helped us to engage freely was the reminder that, no matter where we end up following this conversation, to follow the truth and where the truth would lead us 'is' to follow Christ, and so we should not be fearful of letting the proverbial cards fall where they will.

Keith Nestor describes Catholicism so truthfully. As a convert from Presbyterian/Lutheranism, I can give testimony that all my anti-Catholic indoctrination was so false and unfounded. I was never taught apostolic church history, about the church founders and that many customs in the Catholic Church also nod to Jewish Worship customs as ordered by God to the Israelites in the Old Testament. I do think we have to recognize that church practices do evolve through time. Individuals do study the Bible which has become more significant in the past few decades. Mary is not worshiped, but she is recognized as being important to Christ himself. The Saints are Christian examples for us that can enhance our faith in God. And the term Born Again was offensive to me as a Protestant-objecting to judgement from Born Again Christians who accuse people who do not have “that moment”. Thank goodness Catholic Mass weekly and daily in some parishes, enables us to refocus upon our Personal Savior, Jesus Christ.

Very sadly, I have a cousin who does adhere closely to those caricatures in attempting to dissuade me from my Catholic faith ~ she can be overtly hurtful and entirely closed off to any healthy dialog. It’s terrible because I can’t even have a normal relationship or conversation with her without it becoming tense and even combative on this issue. Even on social media..... she’s quite hurtful, blasting the Catholic Church with those same tired misconceptions ~ she’s told me that I “have nothing to prove” when I share things personally from my Catholic faith in social media .... I don’t see it as having anything to prove, but everything that I am desirous to share ~ it once bated me into a response that I am not proud of, but I snapped and said that Protestantism is a heresy.... oh I feel terrible for slinging that; it was a low moment for me for certain. here’s what I have seen: many Protestants, in my experience, are perfectly at home ... with overt attacks against Catholicism, but they are often sharply taken aback by any criticism in the reverse ~ I admire deeply that the two of you can model what it’s like to foster healthy, productive, and loving dialog as a Catholic and a Protestant ~ as brothers in our One Savior ~ I cannot thank you both enough ~

Hi Austin! I'm one of your catholic followers. I watched your conversation with Keith yesterday and it gave me some points to think about. So probably you were in the background of my mind since yesterday. Today as I was praying the rosary you came to my mind, so I prayed for you too. And I felt a desire for your conversion but (!) not because I think Catholicism is superior or more correct than Protestantism, but simply because, while reciting a communal prayer with the whole church and thinking of how many of us praying were praying for other brothers and sisters, I realized that the true beauty of Catholicism is the universal community it creates. At the same time I had an opposite thought, interestingly. At the same time I realised that if the most beautiful and important part of being Christian is being together and being united, then creeds and denominations don't count. I still contemplate these contradictory thoughts, it doesn't bother me at all, they can be both true :) just wanted to share an episode that may be interesting to think about denominations and ecumenism. Of course, thank you for your work. Melissa, Italy Possa il Signore custodirti nella Sua pace. May the Lord guard you in His peace!

I am just watching this episode with Keith. Excellent points regarding the need for hospitality and follow up of people who seek to be part of our faith. The fact of our apparent passivity towards posible newcomers is the ever present understanding of the presence of our Lord and the movement of the Holy Spirit who inspires and guides the individual graced with inspiration to move towards the Catholic Church. I've seen it so many times as a Catholic apologist and as one time member of an evangelization commission. Nonetheless, hearing your conversation brings up the urgency, these days, of being proactive in helping fellow Christians know the truth in the one Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church, founded by Christ. Austin, you are such a gracious and open minded host. It truly amazes me. You're leagues ahead of many of us. 10 years ago, when I was a severely anti-Catholic fundamentalist Protestant, it took forever to learn how to put down my guard and question things/myself in a critical way. Becoming Catholic doesn't happen over night, like you both mentioned; in fact, anyone who's honest with themselves will admit they're constantly learning. There's 2,000 yrs of rich history and tradition to absorb, little by little. That includes growing in humility and grace (one of the hardest things). Steve Ray was 100% correct, you'll never turn back :). I highly recommend his book, Upon This Rock. Wish I discovered that book years ago, it answers so many questions!

We are one in His spirit. The more I am in union with God, the more I realise how vast He is. Everyone is like a blind man trying to understand how an elephant is like. Some say the elephant has a long trunk, some say the elephant has big ears, some say the elephant has a long tail. Protestant, catholics, Greek Orthodox don’t try to convince or argue with each other. Let each other enrich our knowledge of the Lord. Our saviour, our life and our hope. Just put our time and effort in deepening our relationship with the Lord and help each other to do so. May peace be with you all.

As a cradle Catholic, I have too often come upon Protestants who attack the idea of Mary and of Catholics for honoring Mary. I've heard Protestants call her horrible names, say that she wasn't important that Jesus could have just as easily been birthed by a cow. Really Mary bashing! I even have a good Protestant friend who told his elderly mother that she would burn in he'll because she said the rosary! I guess my point is that it's not just Catholics that have misconceptions or who can be so intolerant toward another faith. I always say that that kind of angst and anger doesn't come from righteousness or from God, it comes from below, from the master of lies. I love how open you are to talking through our differences. I appreciate your ability to have an open mind. How polite and courteous you always are to everyone. Thank you and God bless you.
