For those confused about the conversation about Qatar being a Superpower. TLDR's original title was about along the lines of "How Qatar became a global superpower". They have updated the title as many people (including myself) expressed confusion with this take.

@thierryparte2506 I don't think there's ever been 1 definition for global superpower. However, generally what's accepted is. - Superpower - A country that is capable of of being the most powerful country anywhere in the world, economically and militarily. In addition, this country must be able to project that power anywhere in the globe. IE, if the US decides to get involved in Asia, it is the dominant power there. If the US decides to get involved in Europe, it is the most dominant power there. During the cold war, the US and USSR were considered superpowers as both could project military and economic power anywhere in the world and could only be countered by the other. - Regional Power - A country that is the economic and military power in a specific region. Generally they hold huge sway over the nearby countries and are generally only checked by united effort by neighbors or by a global superpower. India, Iran, and Russia are examples of this. They can't really project power but they dominate their local region unless checked by a coalition or a global power. China is still technically at this level but as it's military modernizes it's likely going to be considered a superpower. That being said, different groups have different definitions which is why you get different lists claiming their list accurately portrays the power of nations accurately.

I wish @TLDR would stop abusing the term Superpower. The term is clearly not applicable to Qatar. These days its not even applicable to Russia. Below Superpower there's Great Power. Which criteria Qatar also doesn't meet. So that leaves Qatar as the worlds smallest Regional Power.

This is a decent start. But please, do not utilise the term 'superpower' to refer to Qatar. It is a small-state with an effective and well polished diplomatic toolkit. But its a 'superpower' - that is a specialist IR term reserved for, well, superpowers - the Russia's, China's, India's, Brazil's, Indonesian's (all these have caveats obviously. Qatar is major 'non-NATO ally' too, but that doesnt then elevate its global reputation and influence. The summary is also quite simplistic in terms of what is motivating Qatar's posturing and positioning. If people are interested, l spoke with the fmr Qatari Defence Attache to the US on the Gaza War and why they Qatar is doing what its doing - we expand significantly on what is outlined here kzbin.info/www/bejne/honNfGBsiJeCoqs

I agree that Qatar shouldn't be classified as a superpower. It's overall influence is pretty small and is most well known for their State TV (Al Jazeera) and for their State Airline (Qatar Airways). They've largely used these to become relevant without being overly offensive. Al Jazeera Arab and Al Jazeera Global are quite different from each other as they cater to different audiences. However, Al Jazeera Arab is banned in many ME countries as it's viewed as a propaganda tool by neighbors. The Hamas situation following the negative attention brought about by the World Cup have largely hurt Qatar's image. I disagree with your assessment of other Superpowers. Currently, I would argue that the US is still the only superpower but China is close to being a superpower itself. A Superpower should have the ability to wield power anywhere in the world at a moment's notice and China isn't there yet. It's economic influence is massive and it's military is growing rapidly. Once it gets over it's economic issues and builds up it's navy/air force more, I would view it as a superpower. India is in the position China was in ~10-15 years ago and could be classified as a strong regional power. Russia and Brazil are also regional powers but perhaps not at the same level as India. I don't think Indonesia could be considered a regional power at this point as it doesn't really exert influence on surrounding territories.

Yeah a mediator is not a superpower. A mediator has the trust of many countries to facilitate cooperation because they believe the neutral party is well... neutral and won't be biased towards a certain side. A superpower can be a mediator and act as a neutral dialogue facilitator between multiple groups saying "we don't care what you agree on, but if you come to an agreement we will enforce it by economically supporting parties who stick to the agreement and give free weapons to cooperators if someone cheats." A superpower can also directly intervene and just pick a friendly -puppet- leader to support.

Qatar is hardly a Mediator if all of the stories are true. Qatar appears to have been the financier for Hamas. So, without Qatar's support Hamas could not have committed the October 7 atrocities. In previous similar situations the Israelis have backed off. So, in order to protect its Child, Hamas, Qatar then tries to mediate.

In reality, Qatar would be greatly threatened by the peace deal that is to be brokered between Saudi and Israel. Trade routes from the East + Global South would be administered through UAE and Saudi through Israel and eventually Europe, which would greatly threaten Iran and Qatar vying for regional power, which is why Hamas attacked in the first place. Qatar was humiliated when Military Wing of Hamas broke the November Ceasefire by refusing to hand back some of hostages, as had been previously agreed by the Political Wing of Hamas. This inadvertently revealed that although Qatar might have financial leverage over the Political Wing of Hamas, they had none of over the Military Wing. It also demonstrated that Hamas is divided. During the talks it was shown that Egypt had leverage - because they threatened to close some ‘secret’ smuggler tunnels into Gaza, that are actually still open. Because Qatar has lost it’s leverage, is why the subsequent Israel-Hamas talks have taken place in Cario - not in Qatar. It is also why the Houthis started their attacks on then Red Sea…..Israel is not the Houthis Target…Egypt is the Target. Egypt is loosing $ Billions from the Houthis attacks.

A Superpower is a term used to describe a state with a dominant position in the international system and the ability to influence global events and project power on a worldwide scale. This dominance is often characterized by a combination of strong military, economic, technological, and cultural strength. Superpowers are typically capable of influencing or projecting power globally and may have a significant role in international affairs. Now for the last time the US is the ONLY Superpower on earth. By hosting political wing of Hamas, Qatar is trusted by Hamas to make a peace deal if the need arise in future between Israel and Hamas. If there is situation if Hamas trust no one if they are not hosted by any country, peace deals will be very hard, and US knows it thats why US still supports Qatar's hosting of Hamas. That being said, unless you are advocating countries around the world turn off all their electricity, Oil, Gas, and Coal will still play a role. This will be the case until green energy can overtake population consumption.

Indeed, failing to acknowledge the extremely outsized impacts that climate change, especially the increasingly prevalent and constant nature of mass climate migrants/refugees (which is a non-trivial and plurality component of most of the last few decades of mass migration, as well as the root cause inciting many armed conflicts in underdeveloped regions leading to additional migration and refugee crises), and especially the *MF'ING EXTREMELY OUTSIZED* impacts that will be occuring in the next 10-20 years is a gross disservice and makes it all the more clear that TLDR is painfully, *painfully* neoliberal in it's worldview/value system.

I think they are still living in the economicist developmentalist growth paradigm. A few months ago they were saying that food prices must continue their neverending decrease despite the current bumps. And they often discuss the importance of growth and the importance of fossil fuels for growth (well sure! but the elephant in the room...)

Difficult to praise Qatar for anything given their total disdain for human rights including LGBT rights. Frankly I don't care if they've been a mediator. If they want to be seen as anything more than a stain on the reputation of our species, they need to focus on themselves first.

trueordrue--- The USA is fading, falling, and failing faster than Qatar became wealthy. They are SO close to civil war that this very year, 2024, could be when the chasm opens, after their Supreme Court rules concerning Trump's eligibility to be on the ballots of certain states. America has been a failed democracy for decades and decades, if not from their inception. This year those who bother to vote will decide whether or not they embrace fascism. Do NOT expect good things on the global stage from the USA.

Westerners in general just think America is the good guy, capitalism is unironically a good and effective and moral system of organizing everything, and they can just do Galactic Empire shit wherever, whenever, however, and to whomever the fuck they please and will suffer no negative repercussions or consequences for the enforcement and maintenance of their global imperial hegemonic military-industrial apparatus and the socioeconomic-ethnic hierarchy it exists to serve. Utter lack of class consciousness, is the problem.

"As well as Palestine and HAMAS". I really feel separating the two is artificial. You don't separate Israel from their far right leaders, China from the CCP, for a reason; it's just never done on broad approaches like this. If you want to deep dive on Palestinian politics, be my guest. But don't change the rules to the game, that's politics not journalism. If you do this, then do it for all anti-democratic governments, or for none at all.
@mappingshaman5280
@mappingshaman5280 8 ай бұрын
You dont separate china from the CCP or israel from the far right government because they are one entity within another entity. Hamas is a de facto separate entity from palestine. The palestinian authority which is the internationally recognised government of palestine controls the west bank whilst hamas controls gaza. Hamas even fought a war against the palestinian authority to take gaza over. Claiming that hamas and palestine are the same thing, is like claiming iraq invaded syria because of ISIS. It simply isn't logical. In both cases we are talking about separate entities which fought the government before deciding to attack another nation.

@BernasLL
@BernasLL 8 ай бұрын
@@callmefleet So, we agree it runs a big part of Palestine. So, stating Palestine separately as if it was not partly ruled by HAMAS is misinfo? Usually, news outlets say "Palestine Authority and HAMAS". This particular choice makes sense, since HAMAS was ousted from that body, though it remains in close contact. At most, it'd be truthful to say "Palestinian West Bank Authorities and HAMAS".
@BernasLL
@BernasLL 8 ай бұрын
@@mappingshaman5280 That's right. One entity within another entity. HAMAS is an entity within Palestine, its government controls a huge chunk of it. It'd be like saying "North Korea and Korea". Except HAMAS is represented by the Palestinian flag as well, so even more messy. No one is claiming they're the same thing. If a complex situation requires more complex wording, then it should still be CORRECT wording. They're surely not SEPARATE things, to be named separately in the same category. If you're talking about "logical", then you must understand this logic. A - B = B is only true if A is nothing. In the "Palestine = Palestine - HAMAS" formula, HAMAS is not nothing or negligible. It controlled the whole of Gaza before retaliations, ruled a huge part of palestinians resources, people and terrain to do what it wanted. And, as is often in stable authocratic regimes, the Gazan people were fine enough with it as long as they were allowed happy lives. Why we helped make it stable as it launched deranged attacks on civilians is now beyond me. We have seen so much horror from the Kissinger / Cheney types, that we even cannot fathom letting horror regimes fail, for humanitarian sakes.
@mappingshaman5280
@mappingshaman5280 8 ай бұрын
@BernasLL no the palestinian government does not control gaza. And isis controlled large parts of Iraq, you would never say "Iraq invaded syria" you would say "ISIS invaded Syria." Hamas is not an entity within another entity because unlike the ccp or the Israeli far right, they are in direct opposition to the palestinian government. Everything you have said applies to Iraq and isis yet nobody claims Iraq invaded syria, and it would be equally silly to claim Palestine invaded Israel because just like in Iraq and isis, the terrorist organisation and the government are not in cahoots.
