Age of Ultron Quicksilver actually used "time in a bottle" very sparingly too. It was used like the flourish you told it to be. The longest sequence like this in Age of Ultron is the one shown at 3:00, clocking around 6 seconds. To counterbalance not using the "time in a bottle" that so many other speedsters used, they put a lot of effort into designing how he moved outside of slow-mo and it shows when compared to the "blinking" style of movement you see in other movie speedsters.
@umjackd4 жыл бұрын
A lot of aspects of Age of Ultron are better than people gave it credit for. It's still flawed, but I hope that after a few years now people can appreciate what it was trying to do.
@louisvictor34734 жыл бұрын
In those scenes it also shows how fast Mjolnir flies even casually, which imo was cool, and if you pay enough attention to their group fights, it also shows Thor, Vision and Ultron moving not as fast as him but faster than the human characters, which I think was a nice secondary detail too.
@reganator50004 жыл бұрын
@@umjackd i think part of the problem with age of ultron is its technical competency often didn't help it to do the things it actually needed to do- the use of light and colour in the movie are objectively better, but they make it feel less like a comic book story because the colour of the superheros is less prevalent as a result. To the point where the lighting in the original avengers feels better, even though it is technically very flat and doesn't make use of cinematic techniques to nearly the same degree (i think the issue there is that it took the colour and contrast it gave to the lighting away from the characters, somehow)
@TGHunter4 жыл бұрын
Sonic movie did that too. There was only just one "time in a bottle" scene, because the last one they started using as a "oh look another time in a bottle scene, the character is fin-... oh wait Eggman is fast too" And then Sonic actually get serious and they fight in the "time in a bottle" effect while going fast in it. Which imo is just really well done. It could be longer or more elaborated like the Dash scene... but it was ok.

Another thing that works really well in The Incredibles is that we also get to see the weaknesses of his superspeed. Dash runs into a bunch of bugs which get smooshed on his face and he throws himself off a cliff, twice. They really thought about how his superspeed works and gave the movie time to show those moments of Dash not being fully in control of his power so he never reaches the overpowered level of X-Men Quicksilver or the Flash.

This could also be Brad Bird showing us Dash's inexperience using his powers too. Both Flash & Quicksilver have had superspeed longer than Dash and has used it more often so they have better control and generally more environment awareness. In the TV show The Flash, one way normal people could beat Barry is by catching him by surprise. Doing that he isn't prepared to use his superspeed. Then later on in the episode Barry defeats the villain because he is prepared to face them and is more aware of them.

Feel the major problem you run into with speedsters is keeping them consistent. Someone like Flash will pretty much always be "time in a bottle" scenes especially against any random goons who have no chance. So you either have a half second beat down or show the Flash having a bit of fun moving them etc. That kinda goes onto another, your example of Dash only works cause they were able to keep up with him and they are going fast, but it's much more reasonable. I think it's much harder than just "let them be fast" with certain characters.
@daaaah_whoosh4 жыл бұрын
You could say the same thing about most superheroes. Against run-of-the-mill henchmen, the fight is over before it begins unless they want to show off. And really that's something the MCU struggles with, where it's always a fight against an army of henchmen or a fight against someone with the same powers. It's almost never a fight between two forces of equal but different power, or, like in the Incredibles scene, a fight between an underdog and a superior but dumber force.

My favorite representation of super speed on screen was in Man of Steel. Superman fighting the two Kryptonians in Smallville showcased some really incredible speed and power. The decision to cut frames from some movements gave the characters anime style bursts of speed and looked incredible. When Fayora turns her attention to the soldiers, you can see how completely helpless they are to stop her, as she basically teleports around among them. The lack of slow motion really made it all seem more impactful, and I hope they go more in that direction with speedsters than more “time in a bottle” moments.

I think the MCU has been handling speedsters pretty well so far. The original Quicksilver only used "time in a bottle" sparingly and usually just moved super fast, leaving a blue trail behind him. In WandaVision, both "Quicksilver" and Speed have blue trails as the representation of their powers so far.

@jpcsdutra4 жыл бұрын
Here's my issue with this though: Flash is time in a bottle. Quicksilver isn't. The whole purpose of the Speedforce is to magi-babble why the Flash can have finesse while in high speeds and disconsider friction. Flash relativizes time , well, all the time. If you're gonna spend a whole movie with him, I get it, we need to see him act from the point of view of other people, but whenever we are with him we need scenes of how he sees the world, not that I disagree with Dash's scene example, but time in a bottle is what the Speedforce is. Now, Quicksilver, as far as I know, is just fast. He can run really fast but he doesn't babble on how it is that he is able to do things. He is a hero that should have a lot more focus on doing things fast than with heightened senses. It is not the same kind of speed. He can't really act the same way as Flash does if he is not robbing speed from other things or negating friction. He is the car chase and the quick beatdown. They are different characters with a different set of skills that looks the same, but it is like comparing a karate movie with a kung fu movie. It is not the same thing. It's the same kind of inconsistency when we compare Ant-man and The Atom. Virtually the same, but one changes molecular composition alongside compression, which ultimately solves for density issues, and the other loops around into magi-babble into a micro-universe and extra-dimensional mass.

A big problem with the whole “don’t make it a time in a bottle scene” tho, is that, with your Dash example from the incredibles, he’s not only being chased but he has a ton of space to go. You literally called the scene “the 100 mile dash.” Speedsters aren’t always going to have that much room to show exactly what’s going on with the character, not even mentioning that other characters are probably faster than dash to start out with, so it’s just more simple to show what’s going on from that characters POV in superspeed than to just show a ton of whooshing in a room.

I think the reason why they use the time in a bottle technique is because fast moving is best captured over long distances. Getting from point (A) to point (B) as fast as possible, but when your in a fight ,combating with someone ,the time in a bottle technique is best because you can see exactly how fast they are compared to everything else around them.
@derpionderpson14244 жыл бұрын
For me the slow motion or “time in a bottle” scenes are ok, it’s the lack of conservation of momentum that’s my issue... yeah sure, for the speedster the bullets or missiles or whatever, may seem to almost stand still, but in reality they are moving in a direction, and any interaction the speedster has would have to overcome that momentum AND once it has done that it would now be applying its own momentum. So when quicksilver moves the bullets slightly to the side, they should now be spinning rapidly and primarily moving in this new direction. When sonic moves missiles around, they should be continuing in the direction he pushed them in and also probably spinning quite a bit. And it would be really nice if we got to see the speedster’s actually using some force to move objects. That entire interaction has a huge ability to keep speedsters in check and at the same time make them really strong, like sure, you can save your friend by pulling them out of the exploding house, but due to the extreme speeds your traveling at they will experience some really hard g-force and may even breaks a few bones, or you may push a bullet out of the way from hitting a civilian, but now it got even more speed and an uncontrollable direction maybe hitting the villain and killing him or maybe hitting another hero and wounding them. There’s a lot of possibility in making the speedsters ability a curse as much as a gift, but they are almost always just comedic relief...
@snowboundwhale68604 жыл бұрын
Another part of this issue that's fairly common and is very pronounced in a lot of the quicksilver scenes shown in this video, not only do the objects they interact with not adhere to momentum properly, the speedsters themselves often don't in various ways, but most annoyingly they're shown moving at normal speeds while everything else is slow/ still, which is a time alter effect not a speed effect. e.g. 4:56, the most telling "time in a bottle" I feel. He straight up isn't moving fast here, he hasn't got any of the momentum that'd come with that, he wouldn't need to make even half the steps he makes once he's going at the supposed speed he just starts at. When Quicksilver is running up a series of platforms that he's able to land on and kick off've before they even start to fall from him stepping on them, that's already pretty bad- they're being treated like fixed objects when they should have just been shot into the floor as fast as Quicksilver is moving, but regardless he wouldn't be moving with "human-length" strides, he'd launch off whatever he stepped off, and would have to kick out against whatever relatively fixed object is near to make any notable change to his direction while airborne.

It's because Dash is a cartoon, and trying to film Evan Peters or Aaron Taylor-Johnson doing something like that is a whole lot harder to make it look not-ridiculous.

The thing is, quicksilver is definitely not stopping time. We can see him using his momentum in the time in a bottle scene. It’s the reason he can run on walls or when he touches someone with just a poke of his finger. Even when he just vibrates his hands to make the glass break. He also held magnetos head so he wouldn’t get whiplash. So he is definitely moving fast and not slowing down time. However, we are supposed to be seeing how he perceives the world. Which would make it look like he is stopping or slowing down time

Thank you for this video! Honestly, Quick silver's "Speed scene" didn't do it for me. I didn't get what the big deal was and I couldn't figure out why I didn't like it and it didn't feel like what I would expect from Flash or Quick Silver. You nailed it. ty I think Sam Raimi would make a great Flash movie. Can you imagine a Flash Cam? Like his spicy cam from his Spiderman movies? He also understands speed and momentum. Just look at the greatest super-hero fight scene ever; doc Oc and spicy on that train. In fact, the whole fight from the building/ clock tower to the train is epic. The camera is so alive in that scene, in the way it stops and stretches and pulls in and out with the speed and momentum.

Yeah, I don’t get the hype about Fox-Silver either yet so many people swear that he’s the fastest live action speedster. Compared to the other live action speedsters his feats are pretty small scale because I’ve never seen him run across the globe in minutes (Makkari) or move so fast around a major city that he was nigh-omnipresent(CW Savitar).

I think the Age of Ultron quicksilver does super speed the best, since we tend to see him from the perspective of other people, with the occasional slow down scene

I think A-Train in The Boys is a great portrayal of the proper kind of super speed you discuss here. I think it's especially great because they show him making mistakes by running so fast and he can actually get caught off guard if he isn't paying attention. They also try to instill some realism to the power by talking about his necessary daily caloric intake and how younger speedsters have an edge over him.

you are an inspired essayist. seriously, keep it up. this is brilliant. i love the quicksilver scenes, i had forgotten the incredibles scene, i loved speed racer for its pacing, and i had not put the pieces together. you are right. super fast movement is not the exact same power as time distortion, there are differences. its 2 different fantasies. dont cross the fantasy streams or you get mush. i agree, a flash movie should be supercharged, over the top excitement. how about running around the entire world? hes watching a villain at his lair in mongolia via video, ready to torture, and he pullls out a pair of closed cell foam walkers with perpendicular slats that catch the water, throws them over his shoulder, and takes off from new york, crosses the continent, runs across the bering straits, then across siberia and arrives at the lair within 10 minutes. zap.

I honesty think that he doesn’t stop time , neither runs fast (kinda) I think he’s ability is to speed up his molecules, let me explain : we can see in the pentagon breakout scene when quicksilver destroyed the glas that he’s hands were moving so fast they broke the glass now that wouldn’t be possible if he could just slow time , this molecule power is also used in the time in a bottle scene where he sometimes is not moving or just playing with the guards and the time is still slowed now if he was just fast the time would be slower for him only if he was running fast and if he’s not running his molecules are vibrating so fast that he is basically fast without even moving. This may also be the reason why he can manipulate stuff and to see things slower when he is not running fast
@mitchelpaulus40784 жыл бұрын
My biggest grievance with “time in a bottle” scenes was speedsters cognition while moving so fast. I feel like it would be more grounded if speedsters couldn’t really make decisions to such and extent while speeding.

Problem with this suggestion: Unless the speedster is dealing with a very simple situation -- running away or fighting -- stuff _happens too fast to see them making choices._ Even _The Matrix_ used time-in-a-bottle. Arguably _The Matrix_ invented time-in-a-bottle -- it was called "bullet time", remember? Why? Because the fight scenes wouldn't have worked without it. I must confess here that my experiences aren't the same as yours -- Neo dodging and punching at super-speed doesn't have tension, for me. It's when it goes into bullet time and you see how close he comes to getting hit that you feel -- or that I feel -- the suspense.

I think what makes those time in a bottle scenes so annoying for Sonic, is that it's completely against how Sonic is supposed to work. In the games, he has a real feeling of weight and inertia that makes the iconic loop-the-loops and ramp jumps possible. Sonic doesn't accelerate and decelerate at those speeds, he has to build up speed, and kicks up dust when braking. But all of that has to be ignored if you want him to do time in a bottle scenes.
@igota100inscience94 жыл бұрын
But see, depending on how fast they move we need those scenes were they are slowed down, and in apocalypse quicksilver was moving at a normal speed and super speed while in super speed

i mean, the flash CW show doesn't really use his "time in a bottle" that much, like once per season?
@Jenjak3 жыл бұрын
One thing that they often seem to forget is inertia and friction. When Quciksilver or Flash grabs someone at (at least) 10 times the speed of sound (not even mentioning the shockwaves that it should produce, or the ground being destroyed by this amoun of friction) even if he thoughfully hold their head so they don't get whiplashed, they should be stretched and torn appart by the acceleration, because their feet would keep their inertia while their head is accelerated at idk how many Gs. And being able to move that fast without being torn appart themselves means they should be *indestructible* (pun intended). Moving at such speed should cause so much chaos and destruction, the heroes would not even want to use their powers. xD

The problem is that they have become too repetitive and overused. There are other ways to make use of superspeed in action sequences that just seem to be avoided by movie directors.
@AIIXIII03 жыл бұрын
@@mekingtiger9095 This. Yup. They should be used sparingly or don't make it too long. AoU Quicksilver is still my favourite speedster. He doesn't have too much time in a bottle moment. JL's Flash on the other hand, personally slow-mo too much. Cartoon Flash doesn't even use "time in a bottle" and it's still fun to look at him. Still, any animated media do speedster better.
