But since I don’t have any social media and I’ve completely halted on reaching out to people ( since friendships is a two way lane) I don’t receive texts or calls from anyone. Very well put! I'm 73 years old and have never used Social Media except You Tube (is that considered social media?). I see how stressed and tense my children and grandchildren are who are on Social Media 24/7. I think the difference from my generation to now, is that we weren't "on call" all the time. We didn't have input of confusing information thrown at us constantly. We didn't carry phones around with us (there weren't any😄) And news was something you watched once a day in the evening and could turn off if it was annoying. We had more time for our thoughts, our friends and just experiencing life. I'm not saying my generation is better, just maybe more relaxed and peaceful. I have to monitor the amount of time I go on YT. I try to steer myself towards positive videos and love history docs. However, during this period of time with all the upheaval in our world, I avoid YT's home page and go right to what I want. Who needs to be constantly reminded of all the chaos? A person can handle only so much. Thanks for your video!

If you use KZbin like you'd watch TV then it's not as invasive as social media but do be aware of the algorithmic content selection that's there to feed prejudices and encourage addiction to its platform. We all want to be validated. The comments give the illusion of interaction but frequently descend into one line dismissals of hostile intent. It's one of those platforms that's addictive unless you put it aside until you have time rather than it eating your time. It's major danger, in my opinion, are the lifestyle videos accompanying music tracks and lifestyle channels, both of which convey unrealistic idealisations of perfection that are corrosive creating feelings of being insufficient. Like all social media it's designed to be addictive and seemingly harmless. It's funded by advertising so it must target users interests to make them buy. If you vary your viewing extensively and enjoy being challenged by varying viewpoints it truly screws the algorithms into atrocious recommendations. Lots of fun!

How about actually talking with each other. That's a novel idea. I remember a time when living in the moment meant so much more , than this way. I love to feel the pages of a book or to actually hold a photograph. Kids used to do alot of crafts that their parents saved to share with them when they got older. The teachers used to get the kids to trace their hands on paper or in clay and then they would decorate it for mothers day or fathers day. As a parent I loved to see those things come home from school. Social media is for the birds. I am only on u-tube to find out where are the latest lies I am suppose to believe. You need to keep your mind on positive things and positive people.

@brynleytalbot7784 жыл бұрын
veeandola I don't think anyone shared moments. They created Facebook lives to feel part of something but in the end lost their own identity. The rebellion against materialism resulted in experiences being bought, but just like the addiction to buying things, the same aim emerged, the illusion that even though you're all doing the same experiences that somehow you're actually different. Facebook makes its money by selling you to its advertisers, who know that Facebook view everything you do and therefore can decide what's most important to you and market it, knowing that insight is highly prized by advertising. Even your moments are constructed by peer pressure through intense algorithmic analysis of your activities both on its platform and though cookies transmitted back to it from your activity on other platforms and your web browsing. What we've lost sight of is that from the 1950's onwards advertising took a place in society to promote lifestyles that sold products. Even the moments we thought we created were constructs of clever marketing through the generations. Teenagers, sexual liberation, nightlife, etc, are all, when looked at dispassionately, constructs to create markets to sell images of an ideal life, all requiring purchases to "fit", thus expanding the economy. Facebook et al simply turned traditional advertising and consumption on its head, emerging as a dominant director of lives. I often joke that the FDA would never license any drug that required such doses, or invoked such levels of addiction, as those consumed by social media users. It was never innocent. The early users didn't know of the addictive nature of it or the use of psychological manipulation to engage the user and make addiction practically impossible to avoid. It's tough to drop out of what everyone connects through and effectively invoke lockdown on your social network.

The Golden Goddess I've made this remark elsewhere but it's important to note that since the 1950's advertising promoted ideals of perfection though lifestyle presentations that constructed "marketing characters" of us all. We exist in highly marketed constructs of what an ideal Western society is. It's all directed towards economic growth and the illusion financial success gives happiness because we then we can buy happiness. It's not society defining wants, it's advertising converting wants to needs thus ensuring we can't do without them. The individual becomes anathema to the process of converting society to ever changing concepts of ideals of perfection invoking purchasing of goods to reach the unattainable because it's always moving one step away from your achievement. We don't know what we want or who we are because we've lost sight of anything that's actually real. Maybe lockdown forced a perspective few were prepared to take. Many lived on virtually as if nothing happened. That's the societal disconnect of social media. It's frightening.

It's all related to your focus within its content. With lifestyle channels being visual video Instagram accounts it is social media. However it's been smart in allowing such a diversity of content thus escaping the criticism of its competitors. Used, like any tool, it's educational and constructive. A chisel can sculpt a piece with beauty and majesty is one persons hands and in another become a weapon inflicting death and carnage. Much lies in the users hands and intentions.

I deleted my Facebook and Instagram today. I went for a walk instead, and discovered a section of river that I didn't even know existed. Found an arrowhead. Saw a hawk fly overhead and heard it screech. Found a beaver dam. An old campsite. It's sad how much life I was missing out on for the sake of a few likes or comments.

It's harder for me because for teens, not using "instagram" makes me look less appealing and "not cool". I think during this quarantine, I've learned that social media is just a huge waste of my time and I spent a huge amount of time just to see what other people's doing and comparing myself to them (to my friends, influencers, etc). For the first and second day, I think it was pretty tough. However, after weeks it seems normal. I'm still using youtube and quora. Taking breaks from instagram does affect me a lot (In a very good way) and I think I've improved a lot during the times I'm not on social media and I start working on myself more rather than seeing how's people life. sorry for my english though

When I was a little boy back in 1965... we didn't even have TELEVISION. I was a small boy, but I remember our family had what is called, "togetherness". That means we all sat in our living-room talking to each other, dad read newspaper... we told stories and laughed about things. Then we got a TELEVISION. It was black & white and it got about 4 channels. All of us noticed we had LOST OUR TOGETHERNESS. We actually talked about how we don't talk with each other anymore. We just sit and watch this BOX. People today do not miss that togetherness because they never had it to begin with!!! Think about that. You don't even know what togetherness is because you have never experienced it. P.S. I am 65 years old.

During that week I’ve felt sad, angry, disconnected, and a massive sense of loss after taking years to build up connections and followers. Having said that I’m now realising how addicted I was, how large parts of my day were taken up with scrolling, commenting and creating ‘content’. I’m starting to feel freer and clearer and I’m thinking maybe I don’t want or need my account back. I started taking a break from Instagram 4 days ago and Twitter about 10 days ago - and I'm still on my break from them. I used to spend a lot of my time on Facebook - 4 or 5 hours a day on my PC and 2 1/2 hours a day on my smartphone. Have taken short breaks from FB a couple of times. Nowadays, I go on FB to communicate with friends, book groups and music groups - 20 minutes on my smartphone and 90 minutes on my PC. Felt a lot different than ever...and that's a good thing. I encourage people to cut back on the use of social media or just get a break from it altogether (or both). It's gonna help you be more productive and feel at ease with yourself. If you have depression - severe depression, step back from social media if and of its platforms or all of them making you feel that way.

I'm honestly never really on (I only have FB and IG account), but I want to be able to get to the point of not needing to go on to check in. IG is honestly very damaging - I love it, but I hate it too. During this pandemic, its even more damaging to be on these platforms. I'm missing out on hobbies I love and just having inner peace. Watching this, I am definitely going to fully implement my social media detox. If I end up completing deleting these apps then I'll be content. Glad your journey worked out for you. ❤

By making a conscious choice to quit and informing us all how and why you have done so, this can only help others take a look at how and why they themselves use social media. I’m sure that most younger people wouldn’t understand that social media can be addictive, especially as they are only using it in the same way, and no more, as their the peers. I hope that many people get to know about the negative element of social media and get to see that there is a great deal that they are missing in the real world. PS.
