I know it seems like to “Seek Discomfort” we need to do the outrageous thing, the crazy thing, the world-traveling, thrill-seeking thing. BUT what Matt did was also Seeking Discomfort! Sometimes making the hard decision to do what’s right for you and persevering through it is just as hard and is exactly what yes theory is about!! 👏🏻

YEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSS! For a very long time I have been saying this to myself That seeking discomfort means so many different things and at times, it means seating down with a book at home instead of going out and seeking thrilling adventures.

Yeah as much as I was inspired by Yes Theory I did want and at the same time couldn't imagine how stressful it would be to be one of these guys doing these things. At some point you would realise the need to be grounded and find yourself. Some goals are meant to be reached with lessons in time.

It sounds like it took a lot of courage to step back from Yes Theory, and I commend Matt on recognizing that certain aspects of his life were causing discomfort in a way that wasn’t helpful for him. I like how y’all discussed that sometimes removing things from your life is what is needed to grow. I appreciated the vulnerability in this episode!

Nathaniel, so happy you got Matt to this, one constructive feedback, please leave more room for the other person, you interrupted sometimes Matt when he was sharing his story and interrupted the flow of the convo and sometimes talked about your story and took away from Matt’s story. For me those friendships with deep conversations started as soon as I started saying what I really thought or felt instead of what I thought I was supposed to say. I started making instant connections with people - it was pretty amazing. As soon as you start showing up as yourself, people can finally see you ... if you want friendships with deep conversations, show your depth and your loving heart with everyone you meet - not everyone will be on your wavelength, but you'll attract the ones who are :)
@o0Theresa0o
@o0Theresa0o Жыл бұрын
Here's a very gentle piece of constructive criticism - it seems like you connect with people by sharing your similar stories/shared experiences. This can be great in real world conversations (although, some people don't love this kind of communication style). However, in the context of an interview, this approach detracts from your guest being fully heard. Maybe have a special episode where you're being interviewed so that you can talk about yourself, but when interviewing others, just stay silent and let them speak their piece. If your response absolutely requires an anecdote to lead to a question, fine, but otherwise, leave that out. I recommend watching the host of The Diary of a CEO to see how to strike that balance. All that said, you seem like a genuinely sweet and smart guy, and you have interesting things to say. But for an interview, I think it would really elevate your content to take a back seat.

I GASPED and RAN to this as soon as I saw it! This episode is especially beautiful because you can see that Matt is a good listener so he asks really good questions which makes this a great conversation to listen to. I also remember hearing 'depersonalization' for the first time when Matt talked about it and when I googled it, everything in my life made sense! I've also been on my journey since then discovering that I'm also a sensitive person who's anxious. So Matt, you've had bigger impact on people than you know, you're literally changing lives. The healthiest and happiest people I’ve met live like it’s 1975. I’ve never had the impression people heavily into social media are mentally balanced. The more they talk about living their best life , it feels like a hopeful affirmation and not a reality. Makes sense why so many celebrities go BONKERS. I found Yes Theory in 2019 after I lost my daughter. I was in a really bad head space. They helped me so much. Matt has always been one of my favorites. I was so sad when he left. I still watch them. They are all amazing. I’m so sadden to hear the struggle he’s gone through. I had anxiety and panic attacks while pregnant from previous pregnancy losses. So I understand that dissociating. We have such high standards for people these days and it’s causing so many issues. Now as a mom of a daughter. I can see how parenting has such an impact on our mental health. I’m learning so much about my childhood and how messed up it was and how it’s affected me now as an adult. I now have knowledge to change that for my daughter.

I’ve been waiting for this episode since you very first teased it. Matt was such an incredible member of Yes Theory. He always came across as genuinely kind and sincere. It’s sad to hear how he struggled throughout his experiences and just another reminder that even the most outgoing and happy seeming individuals have internal struggles we know nothing about. Always be kind. While I loved this interview, my only (small) criticism would be that you didn’t allow Matt to finish his thoughts. Perhaps because you’re close friends, the conversation flows naturally and it’s easy to cut someone off, but it felt like he would be getting into a deep and detailed story only to be interrupted. I just wish we could have finished some of those stories. But I mean no offense. It’s a beautiful interview and I truly find this podcast inspirational.

I agree, I feel like Matt was in the middle of his sentence and Nathaniel would follow up with another question without letting him finish or interrupt him, I thought it was kind of irritating but no shade Nathaniel! Like Amanda said, maybe in the moment the conversation is flowing and you have many questions that you'd like to ask, but it would have been great to hear the rest of whatever Matt wanted to say. Still enjoyed the episode though, great stuff

This is truly how you seek discomfort, having these vulnerable feelings and conversations. So much of what our world needs. Such pure intentional content. So much wisdom and honesty. Sensitivity is a beautiful thing and more men should embrace those sides of them, that don’t make them weaker in any way, it is so attractive and powerful. Too much misconceptions and stigmas around sensitive people. I also read the book, The Highly Sensitive Person by - Elaine N. Aron, who also wrote The Highly Sensitive Person in Love. I resonate so much with you Matt and Nathaniel, on a very deep level. I am with joy of the belief, that we can shift society perspectives for the better, with people like you sharing your stories! So wholehearted and thought provoking in all the right ways!!! Genuine, thoughtful, caring about the community, of how connected we all are!!! How we value creation and the parallel impacts we cannot ignore. Please HMU if you are ever in Toronto - I’d love to pick your brains! Less egos, more amigos🫶

This was such a deep and profound conversation to sit in on. I'm 29 and I've had a lot of similar realizations as Matt (just without that level of success, lol). The value of subtraction is so real. Saying no to a lot so I can say yes fully to the stuff that's important to me. Sifting my motives to figure out if what I do is just hustling for love and affirmation, or really an overflow of my real values spilling out into the world. Being present and grateful in a culture, especially social media, that screams "MORE, BIGGER, BETTER." In that kind of culture, rest is rebellion. Wishing you guys the best for finding joy and fulfillment in this journey of life.

Nathaniel! If you want your podcasts to come across as more intimate, don't sit all the way across the table from them! It would be easier to connect with guests and make the podcast more personable if you and your guest were sitting closer to one another. Think about it like this: when good friends are sitting down to have a conversation, where do you seat yourselves? All the way on opposite ends of the table? Hi Nathan, I've seen some of your videos on this channel and your other one, and I have to say that this interview with Matt was the viewing experience that was singularly enriching: the frankness, sensitivity and intelligence put forth by both of you on a range of topics -- but especially the work, fame and identity distorsion that comes with KZbin success -- was resonating. It was everything a literary salon exchange should be, and it shows the value of in-depth interviewing of someone who has put thought and emotional investment into their path, conducted by someone who's lived the same experience.

Watching this as a small time content creator, it’s so encouraging to hear about Matt’s courage and determination to stick to what he knew what right for him. At such a heavy cost in the social media culture of today, he made some HUGE moves. Amazing. We love the content we make as it is centered around helping others but I hope I have that same courage if stepping back ever becomes necessary in the future. Great interview!

As much as I love all of the Yes Theory founders and creators, I always thought Matt was my favourite (I have been following them since 2017). Just his kind gentleness alongside his sense of adventure and honestly just his personality - I could relate to him the most. I totally respected his decision to step back; it almost made me like him more even though I miss his video presence. If I can afford it (I'm a broke student over here), I will definitely buy his book! Thank you Matt for sharing all of this! Seek discomfort but not to the overall detriment of your mental and/or physical health :) Edit: I am now listening to this further. I completely understand the anxiety, and even more so the depersonalization. It is horrendous. Thank you for opening up about this, as it really isn't spoken about a lot.

I always wonder where my ability to disconnect is from but when I hear stories like this, I just become amazed and grateful. Disconnecting from social media has never been a problem for me... I can get sucked in an IG/FB/Twt hole for a day but then I won't have that same itch the next day...yknow? I don't have the feel of being on it 24/7, 7days etc....I can go on for months without checking in on my socmeds...The mind is a really powerful tool.

This speaks to me on so many levels. I recently retrieved from being an advanced care paramedic. My coworkers often joke we all suffer from stolkholm syndrome. When your in it you do it but when you have a moment to sit back you realize how actually crazy and effed up it is.

Matt has always been my favorite!!! I relate to everything he is saying. I’m also very anxious and a highly sensitive person. I can’t wait to read his book. Also, I wish I had friends that wanted to have deep conversations like this.

This is a fantastic conversation lads, really enjoyed the honesty and vulnerability. As a fan of Yes Theory it’s great to hear from Matt, I’m glad he’s in such a good place now. I’ve suffered a lot with illness in the past few years. It’s taken my fledgling career away from me, and robbed me of my mid 20s. Before I got ill I was working on many projects (many baskets) which likely contributed to my poor health. The suffering has given me a much better understanding of what’s important in life, and as you said I have more empathy for other people now.

totally relate to the depersonalization/derealization conversation - I appreciated when Matt brought this up on Impaulsive a while back. The best way to explain depersonalization is when you meet a celebrity or are surprised and you start questioning - is this a dream, is this real, etc (except it's the opposite connotation and you're kind of stuck there). Derealization, it's a mild form of visual symptoms - including eye floaters, stars/little dots of light in your vision, static vision (like an old TV), and a lot of resonance images (when you look at something and you blink thereafter, it resonates in your field of view). Ultimately, the visual cluster of symptoms can be categorized as a mild visual experiences a kin to those on psychedelics. The only way I found myself out of it was to realize it was a function of focus/attention and ultimately the only way to move on with shifting that attention was to develop a self-referential framework in the context of my identity, etc. It's a very bizarre experience, but there is hope for anyone struggling with it

I love Matt’s ways of expressing himself and honest vulnerability. Living in multiple countries and even working with some of his friends in LA, in retrospect, I think the hustle American mentality seems like it isn’t good environment for him (and myself tbh). Especially in the business and YT world, being sensitive and caring a lot doesn’t lend itself to feeling good like other jobs and industries. He’s a super smart and driven person, and excited to see what he does not as part of Yes Theory, but as Matt Dajer. Rooting for you if you ever read this 🎉

'There is no such thing as a billionaire who's cool in highschool.' This is a massive realization of the last few years - almost all top performers seem to have this urge to prove something, not only to themselves but to the world that used to laugh at them. Success might still be a nice thing, but you'll only be able to enjoy it once you let go of this notion of 'now I'm proving them wrong'.
