How racism makes us sick | David R. Williams

Why does race matter so profoundly for health? David R. Williams developed a scale to measure the impact of discrimination on well-being, going beyond traditional measures like income and education to reveal how factors like implicit bias, residential segregation and negative stereotypes create and sustain inequality. In this eye-opening talk, Williams presents evidence for how racism is producing a rigged system -- and offers hopeful examples of programs across the US that are working to dismantle discrimination.

@torvaderon
@torvaderon 7 жыл бұрын
Karl Popper was the originator of the distinction between _science_ and what he called _pseudoscience_. I urge you to look him up. It seams the US hasn´t gotten the message that empirisim and inductivism have been dead a century. Sociology is greatly corrupted and laughed at since the days of Freud. Thinking that adding tonnes of factors to your eqation will make it look more sophisticated is just childishly unscientific. You have to establish what you mean by "racism" befor you can quantify it. I mean come on this is school level common sense. What matters are the explanitions you develop. How much reach they have quantifies their relevane. A *good* explenation is hard to *vary*, which means that if you switch out any of its componants it doesn´t make sense anymore. If any of it´s parts are disproven the theory is gravely underminded. Theories are only verified by not being disproven and persisting. To achieve progress two factors are importand: *critisim* and *conjecture*. They are the foundation of knowlege, if you dont allow for one or both you´re allready discualified from being scientific and you earn the titel of pseudoscience if you claim otherwise. Now that we established what a good explenation is lets get into what sociology often gets wrong. Not all explenations are equal. For instance Freud could make any data point service to explain the problems of any given person, with for example both to much or to little attantion as a child. In good explenations like the current explenation for the seasons, if you only change the degree of the earths axis the hole explenation collapses. This acctually is a good thing. It is called falsifiability and is fundamental for science. English isn´t my fist language so I am sorry if some expressions sound a little bit odd. This subject has a lot more implications and is very imported to understand in order to navigate through the wave of bad science we face daily.

The youtube comment system makes it hard for me to reread this discussion I can´t see the comment to which I responded in the first place. Never the less I´ll try to answer as best as I can, just keep that in mind. Popper took on positivism and the like and earned a lot of respect for defeating them, but he is often misunderstood and the reach of his explenations is greatly underappreciated. His falibilism is not only the bases for good science today, but also of good philosophy. Ever since Popper introduced his crterion of dimarcation people have misunderstood him to say that testable science is the only thing that matters, when infact Popper himself had many philosophical theories which he himself valued very much. The truth is that the empirical and testible side to science is very small and allways theorylayden. What matters are the explenations underneith. Sociology like every other field is able to develop good explenations, but it is often held back by the misguided view that there are fundations to base ones theories (I would prefer to call them cretiques) on. This ted talk is a perfect example for this problem, because an explenation for what racism is and how it effacts human lifes is not explained, it is assumed. Since he only discusses corrilation it is clear that he doesn´t understand that they are meaningless without a propper explenation. I can demonstrate this with an example: In the seti project centre a champagne bottle is sitting in a shelf. If seti finds extraterrestrial life the bottle will be opend. This means that there is a close to 100% corrilation of the opening of that bottle and the existence of extraterrestrial life. In this situation the normal scientific explenations for opening a champagne bottle (pressure, kork decay) are irrellevent. The most important factor is whether there is life in the univers dicoverd or not. In order to explain why this bottle is being opened you need the right explenation, yet this ted talk doesn´t provide anything close to it. Now there are endlessly more things I would like to criticise, but I will leave it with this last one. He tells us and this should be a red flag for everyone, that he started with his conclusion and sought evedince for it (3:49). This will allmost allways lead you to bad science and is to make a far more important distinction unreasonable.

Of all the videos I have watched on discrimination, I have noticed that when minorities speak on the topic they get more 'dislikes' vs. 'likes' averages, than when Caucasians speak on the same topic. Interesting study to conduct and report on (perhaps from a specific group- to make the topic more relevant to some). Speaker was so absolutely great and powerful in highlighting discrimination at its core; that even when he was not saying a single word or trying to.....he made his topic clear.

As one who has given a TEDx Talk before on a subject that touches on racism, this talk is very enlightening and really helps highlight something I as an indigenous African simply had absolutely no clue about. I challenge those who are watching to also research further on what he touched on about inferior medical attention toward minorities. It is a very sad reality especially when one thinks of America as the "land of opportunity". May God help more African Americans awaken and actively fight to change this subtle racism.

@trishm3002
@trishm3002 3 жыл бұрын
He added the neuroscience behind why humans behave the way we do. Our brains are automatically wired to evaluate threats and rewards. When faced with a threat, we fight, flight, or freeze. Most, if not all police who face Black men, go to fight as their stress response because they believe they’re being threatened (as mentioned in the comparisons between Black and Whites), sadly. And many Black men run and activate a flight response, because they believe they’re being threatened by the police. And because it’s inherent in us to act immediately, arming someone with a gun who knows how to use it, is the most dangerous thing to do under these circumstances. It’s an inherent response that requires an extremely high level of discipline to pause… Most people have not been trained appropriately to pause and evaluate their immediate thoughts, especially if they feel they’re being threatened. Until the view of Black people change and is generally more positive than negative, we will continue to see a continuation of deaths, whether consciously intentional or not. It’s a sad and painful reality on what seems like a never ending road.

This guy made a legitimate case that in Social stituations as a black individual you are always looked at with suspicion which does raise more of your stress/negativity. A lifetime of stress the comes from being perceived as a threat, are you less desirable human do leave to negative health consequences. In a way compared to a high school Outcast that for years of high school he is completely alone made fun of by everybody. But when I see the comments it's only a realization that no matter what I do because of my skin color even being biracial, I'm viewed uneducated and morally compromised. Those type of people commenting saying hateful and hurtful things about black people are the reason we are so divided. My culture is what ruined me? My culture was forced upon me. This that Grey Poupon, that Evian, that TED talk. :) People want to pretend like their racism doesn't affect people's health. Yes, stress makes you sick, but what causes stress? Imagine a mother or father being racist against their own child. All of a sudden it's not hard to see how racism might affect health. Our community is just a larger scale of the family. Institutions that have the power over all aspects of life and death are structurally racist and staffed by people with implicit bias. Classism is the partner in crime with racism.

Where is the humanity? How amazing would this world be if we were all united and worked towards common goals and the betterment of all humanity? Our ability to work together is precisely why humanity is were it is today, and why we have such great accomplishments. I don't know if his facts are wrong or right or somewhere in between and in all honesty it doesn't matter. Greetings Hanaan. I believe (with the deepest respect), that it is impossible to apply a reductionist or a strictly empiricist view, as you have. The impact of racism, can't be isolated as a discreet socioeconomic, psycho-social or even longitudinal trauma that can be understood via epigenetic exploration. Pharmacological, penal, family support, healthy nutrition, housing fit for life, an intelligent and appropriate educational interventions. This will enable human beings to think and imagine a life of beauty, recognise the ecology that binds them, the geography that ensures life. I trust that this has been a positive contribution to this discussion. Stay blessed. OL. Eli

Yes, there's a lot of racism which is unconscious and yes, there's a lot of racism embedded in every system contributing to the running of America - but *_what is wrong with people_* who are STILL committing individual acts of harassment?

As a paid advocate for human rights, BLM supporter, and someone who literally named their 1 year old bisexual child "George Floyd", I wanted to to take this opportunity to make a public service announcement: Black folx, and folx im general are welcome for the incredible work us advocates do. We are literally changing the world for y'all, and you are welcome for our saving you. 😇

It would be a true shame if just because I was white, I was presumed to be racist for calling attention to a contradiction in speech. Which, there are some who know, that I would do it to anyone. No matter their color, as it has been done to me as well. No disrespect intended.

Andrew Shedlock people get really uncomfortable when they're reminded that racism exists and affects people in subliminal ways. watch, right now somebody who benefits from racism is going to respond to my comment super triggered by my even suggesting it.

I am not saying that I disagree, I was just pointing out that people seem very capable to see a title and immediately dislike it without even watching all of it. These people also seem to be able to reply to the video as soon as it is released.

Aracely Ramos Or maybe people are just getting tired of the bullshit? You mention the dislikes but what about those who liked the video before even watching it? If America was racist, explain to me how you had a black president? How you had a black television personality who's worth a billion dollars? I do agree that blacks are socially backward but pinning everything to racism to just childish.

Andrew Shedlock It's because this is not the first video of its kind is it? People are just getting tired of this repeated bullshit and the agenda of the modern day liberals. They watch for a few seconds and realize what this video is going to be about. Hence the dislikes.

Clicking away from a video because you presume what the content is going to be is very different from clicking on a video, disliking it and not watching it because you disagree with an ideology that agrees with the video.

Women don't have the same institutionalized barriers that black people have. They aren't limited by their zip code and years of de jure segregation. You're right in the sense that women, of all races, have worse health outcomes to men in some respects, but women are also more likely to visit a doctor over men. These things are inherently different. You're comparing apples to oranges.

There is even some of them living in front and 2 blocks away from my house,they are zaine people. They even got their kids in the same schools as us. Well...Can someone tell me actually what's wrong over there? P.S:Sorry for the way I write.English is noy my first language nor my second ;)

And it is not about the KZbinrs race. It is about their words. Just because I am white, it doesn’t mean that I am unaware of white privilege. He says race isn’t your future. Myself, I am average. I am a minority myself. Although I am white. I had trouble getting a job because I didn’t know my rights that I don’t have to reveal everything about me. I don’t like the Kennedy’s. This man doesn’t know everything and seems grandiose. It seems like grandiose can cause success. People believing they know more than me cause they don’t have a diagnosis.

We need to have more conversations about racism,we need our white brothers and sisters who can't stand racism, wants to end it, much like they helped us end slavery, Jim Crow.if only white people could live with black skin for 1 year and see what it's like. This country is not a Christian nation as some say it is, they get upset when you say it's a racist Nation.
