Here’s a cool fact from the rescue. At one of the crash sites, while under intense fire from all directions and still in the process of freeing the body of one of the pilots, a wounded and understandably panicked sergeant entered one of the APC’s sent to rescue them and demanded that they leave immediately. The Malaysian APC driver, knowing most of the Americans were still outside, simply responded in broken English with: “No, no. We stay” What a line.

A bit more details about the rescue since a lot of people overlooked this: It was headed by the 10th Mountain Division, technically, but what they lacked it armor, having on Humvees. The only forces nearby who had armor the Pakistanis and Malaysians. The Malaysians had Condor APCs, four wheeled, German-made armored cars, while the Pakistani had old M48 and M60 tanks for fire support. There was a fight going on with the higher ups since 10th Mountain just wanted to commandeer the Malaysian APCs. However, the Malaysian Army 19th Batallion, Mechanized, had battlefield experience of their own and extremely competent soldiers at this point, objected. They eventually reached a compromise where the combat teams dismount and leave only the vehicle crews and the 10th Mountain. The Pakistanis soon pulled out of the battle due to the lack of night vision equipment, making it hazardous for them to fight. The Malaysians and the 10th Mountain pushed on. It should be mentioned that the Malaysians were the UN QRF for the area, so the Malaysian brass was royally pissed when the US didn't even tell them about an op going on, only finding out after the first Black Hawk was shot down. To see this other side of Operation Gothic Serpent, MALBATT Misi Bakara is a dramatized retelling of the events (it's on Netflix).

He said the movie did a good job of showing the brutality, but it didn't do a good enough job of showing the soldiers who were having a blast during the combat. He said that at this point, many of the dudes in the unit were war junkies, so they were laughing as the bullets were slamming into the walls around their heads.

Great summary video. I was a sophomore in high school when this happened. I remember having a discussion about this in health class. Lots of kids were like "We need to help them. What if we need help from them some day?" I was on the side of "What the hell could Somalia ever do for us? We shouldn't be over there. It's not our problem." I still feel the same today, but we still keep throwing tax dollars and bodies into fights that aren't ours. I used to think maybe one day we'll wake up and stop trying to play world police but as an adult and now know that US politicians don't have humanitarian reasons behind these actions. to quote Hilary Clinton, "Never let a crisis go to waste."

Very great video as always. Please keep up your content. I have an idea for a topic and it would certainly be very interesting if you dealt with the terrorist attack at the Olympic Games on September 5, 1972.

It’s unfathomable the amount of courage, strength, willpower and fortitude required to endure such an event. We truly are lucky they are such brave men and women willing to fight for our freedom.

Great doc, Popo Medic... as usual! I remember watching the Somalis dragging a dead serviceman through the streets on the news back then. I'll never forget that $hit. I read Duran's book 'In the Company of Heroes' and the Blackhawk Down book. The movie did a pretty good job converting the book into a film.

Please do The Mad Trapper of Rat River. Crazy story, first manhunt in history to involve an aircraft, flown by WW1 fighter ace Wop May. The Trapper climbed a vertical mountainside to escape the RCMP, he wore his snowshoes backwards and doubled back over his tracks to confuse those following him. He survived being blown up by dynamite inside his cabin, and hiked through blizzards that were so bad that the Native Americans assisting the RCMP couldn't even move through them. While he was eventually shot and killed, his identity still remains unknown

Another huge error with this vid is that he says "US and NATO forces" which is incorrect, they were UN forces, and also the night vision 'footage' of the incident is not from Somalia 1993, camera quality is far too good and they all have M4s so unless all in that shot are delta (which is unlikely) the footage is not from this event

That's the big difference between the USA and China and Russia, whoever. We don't leave our men or women purposely behind like cowards. We're willing to die for each other, not for terror or power. That's what makes us great. Honorable. Rip to the operators who lost their lives that day, and the civilians who needlessly starved.

I love this story it hold a special place in my heart I have read the book several times over watched the movie several times hell I even did a full book report on it in high school I feel like this story shows the might and persistency in our military to get the mission done but also it shows the brother hood among these soldiers who don’t know each other and are from different backgrounds and yet they vowed to leave no man behind these men and women in our military put there lives on the line every day to protect us to all those who died in the battle of Mogadishu may you rest in peace thank you popo medic for posting this amazing story can’t wait to see what else you have in store for us
