How rap killed Rock & Roll - for decades Rock & Roll has been on the decline with hip hop on the rise. Gene Simmons of Kiss says Rock is dead. But what's crazy is how this entire genre was stolen from Black Culture and I'll bet you've never heard of the first Rock & Roll star that inspired Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan and Keith Richards of The Rolling Stones. From Run DMC's collaboration with Aerosmith, to Kendrick Lamar and Lupe Fiasco or Nas, hip hop has continued to evolve while Rock has not. The biggest threat to Rock & Roll, was it's very origin and new genres that threatened to take it's place in the counter culture. Watch to learn how Rock's own subgenres took down classic bands like Led Zeppelin, Kiss, and The Rolling Stones. Will Rock survive the next decade? Or will people only remember Nickelback?

You can also blame the dhead execs who are only in it for the money and not the art. They took all the creativity out in the 90s

I'm GenX, the golden age of hip hop for me was in the mid 1990s (Tribe Called Quest, Cypress Hil, DeLaSoul) and the art form, as I knew it (afrocentric, intellectual, political, spiritual, philosophic) died in the early 2000s. Aside from a few bright spots like Kendrick or Roc Marciano, the genre is basically a shallow, vapid, zombie wasteland of trash.

@juniorjames7076 I'm a boomer and by the late 90s rock went downhill and I think it was because of quality and the industry execs killed it with their canned music.

@juniorjames7076 back in the day record companies invested the time in a band. That's why they were signed to multi record deals. Today they don't want to wait. They want it now!

I feel so old listening to this video 😂 Robert Johnson was by no means forgotten or unheard of. I remember in the 90’s when his complete recordings were rereleased in a boxset, it was a big deal. Clapton’s covered Robert Johnson. Even the Chili Peppers covered Robert Johnson. There are a ton of other blues artists that you neglected to mention. For example Huddie Ledbetter was a huge influence in rock. He was Nirvana’s Cobain’s favorite artist. That 70’s cover of Black Betty by RamJam was popular on TikTok recently. Plus bands like the Stones and Beatles were very open about their influences, including Chuck Berry. As for is rock dead? No, but it’s lost its place at the top. The same thing will happen to hiphop when a new genre comes along that will excite the kids and upset their parents. It’s the way popular culture works 🤷‍♂️

You could see it coming a mile away with the rise of the pop rock star in the 80s. A little bit of talent, but more just good creative people behind the scenes.

You all need to put a little more effort into researching your videos. Rock didn't just come from the blues. Nobody would say Robert Johnson was the first rock star. Rock was only stolen from the blacks because the record labels and artists weren't paying royalties, not because they heard a style of music they liked and started playing it. Rock was a marriage of blues and country (also created by blacks) that as it evolved had roots in many genres of music. The first number one rap album was the Beastie Boys (white guys) in 1987. The Fresh Prince is generally considered the one that brought hip hop to the masses with his very friendly raps and hit tv show (not Drake). The rise in the mainstream popularity of hip hop was supported by rock and metal groups who helped introduce people to the genre. Also, your portrayal of rap as the music of protest and the voice of the people is laughable. Most rap is either party rap, bragging rap, or gangster rap. It's actually becoming more and more rare for a rap hit to have any positive commentary at all. Perhaps these radio stations that pushed lame rock are now also pushing bad rap. You all do need to put more effort into your research and production though.
