Ok I know not everyone is going to see this but before you comment "this is not the most in-depth iceberg video dude there's like a bajillion other more in-depth iceberg videos" or "why wasn't ____ on the list???" Yes I know, I was being sarcastic and I even mentioned this in the outro of the video and I also mentioned how I didn't create this iceberg and even acknowledge that this picture only has a small percentage of the vast majority of genres out there. I get that it's kind of a shitty video that's too long but watch the outro because I cleared up this stuff.

@@no12578 yeah he just read a general description of a genre and suggested a couple of the most known bands within it. You could kind of tell his knowledge (if any) of most genres was superficial at best and some of his takes were really bad. For example I don’t know if you listen to progressive metal but putting porcupine tree and Tool over Dream Theater and Opeth is honestly a disgrace to metal

Ja, I noticed this too. Artists like Aphex Twin, sophie, Burial, Flying Lotus, IglooGhost, Machine Girl, Death Grips, IDM (Genre), Industrial (anything), Post Rock (bands), Post Punk (Bands) were treated as if they were normal. As if they can be compared to Trap Rap and Pop Rock. In reality, these are highly experimental and avant-garde artists and genres that are super esoteric to the general public. There was also a few takes that missed the ball. For example, when talking about post punk and Alternative Rock, I think these bands are better described as being a more artistic and sensitive reaction to punk music and pop rock. Alternative Rock in particular is better described as a reaction to the experimental rock aesthetics emerging out of the 60s with bands like The Velvet Underground, David Bowie, Pink Floyd and Talking Heads. Therefore, approaching rock with a more artistic and experimental lens with bands like Radiohead, Nirvana, The Smiths, Twenty One Pilots (I know it's not the most virtuous example but theoretically it's true). I know this sounds nit picky and gate-keepy. To say the least, this video will trigger the experts, hah. It got on my nerves a little bit.

I realize this video is not actually a very in-depth look at music genres but I recently watched an iceberg video this long about death metal, just death metal, one sub-genre. What I'm trying to say here, is that no matter how much effort you put in, you're still going to miss a lot. One example of something missed was technical death metal, which includes bands like Archspire that are comprised of amazing musicians regardless of what genre you enjoy. I'm glad that you included melodic death metal, though, it includes some amazing bands like At the Gates.

@@Ergoperidot "Real Emo" only consists of the dc Emotional Hardcore scene and the late 90's Screamo scene. What is known by "Midwest Emo" is nothing but Alternative Rock with questionable real emo influence. When people try to argue that bands like My Chemical Romance are not real emo, while saying that Sunny Day Real Estate is, I can't help not to cringe because they are just as fake emo as My Chemical Romance (plus the pretentiousness). Real emo sounds ENERGETIC, POWERFUL and somewhat HATEFUL. Fake emo is weak, self pity and a failed attempt to direct energy and emotion into music. Some examples of REAL EMO are Pg 99, Rites of Spring, Cap n Jazz (the only real emo band from the midwest scene) and Loma Prieta. Some examples of FAKE EMO are American Football, My Chemical Romance and Mineral EMO BELONGS TO HARDCORE NOT TO INDIE, POP PUNK, ALT ROCK OR ANY OTHER MAINSTREAM GENRE

It's always funny to see the genre biases of the people who make these icebergs. I saw another video that heavily focused on vaporwave, EDM, and grindcore variants. This one seems to focus a lot on rock, metal, noise, ambient, and industrial music, with kinda a music nerd's base understanding of other genres. If I were to make an iceberg, it would probably center folk, prog, classical, and traditional forms of music. I think taking a holistic approach will always skew results based on preferences like this, so making individual icebergs for each notable genre heading (rock, folk, R&B, punk, hip hop, industrial, etc.) with a somewhat standardized metric that can be used when cross-referencing charts is probably a better way to go about it.

This gets a huge down vote for not following the traditional iceberg format where you start with the most popular or best known terms and then work your way down to obscurity. This is demonstrated by the VERY first entry being something called “electro swing” - I probably wouldn’t even put Swing itself in Tier 1 (Jazz itself, yes), much a blend with something else. If they can’t even follow the basic iceberg concept… this isn’t worth my time (and it also suggests that I know more than they do - maybe I should make one !)

Yes, you are correct, but also incorrect aswell. You see you're right about that being not being Jimmi Hendrix in the video, that is Jimmy Page from Led Zeppelin, but here's where your incorrect statement comes in. Jimi Hendrix did not write Hey Joe either, that was Billy Roberts. Hendrix covered it and it got popular.

The small moment for death metal was nice, but it’s funny that is the tip of a massive iceberg. Death Metal probably has more sub genres than most standard genres of music. Example: Brutal Death Metal, Melodic Death Metal, Blackened Death Metal, Slamming Brutal Death Metal, Technical Death Metal, etc.

Thrash metal is probably lower because Metallica is insanely popular, yes, but they gained most of that recognition from the Black Album, which turns away from thrash in favor of a more traditional heavy metal style. A large portion of Metallica 'fans' probably only know the Black Album, a select few songs off of the first 4 albums like The Four Horsemen, FWTBT, Master of Puppets, and One. Additionally, Metallica is the exception, even the rest of the big 4 of thrash (Megadeth, Anthrax, and Slayer) have nowhere near the same popularity.

Metalcore is high up on the list as it is probably the most popular and mainstream form of metal in the 21st century. The late 2000s/early 2010s metalcore and post-hardcore bands enjoyed a lot of mainstream success. While there can be a philosophy behind indeterminate music, and I do get the point that whether something is indeterminate or not isn't dependent on what the actual sounds in the music are, it's not that the actual sounds aren't important in the music (at least in the case of cage) My understanding is that cage was trying to remove influence on his ego , or at least in some sense his personal preferences, from his compositions, with an understanding/acknowledgement that any sounds/music could potentially be liked by anyone (or something along those lines) For something like music of changes (that I'm pretty sure he didn't perform himself but someone can correct me if I'm wrong about that) he had specific collections of notes that he liked the sound of, and he arranged them in the piece using chance based methods (specifically the i ching iirc,), and for 4'33" with the additional idea that you cannot have actual silence, the influence of his ego as far as what sounds are chosen is removed from the composition technically 4'33" is someone just sitting at a piano (and at least in some cases also closing and opening the piano lid), but you don't need a piano to perform the piece. at least in some existence, the point of it is that you can frame any sounds as if they're music, and listen to them in the same way you listen to a piece of music. you could just be walking in the woods and choose to listen to all the sounds around you as music there's also a possible distinction to be made between music where the chance elements are used to produce a score that doesnt change from performance to performance (at least in any sense that's different from a conventional score), like music of changes, or music where because of the nature of the score there are aspects that up to chance in the performance, which could mean something like different notes being played each time the work is performed (and there's different terminology used by different people but I don't know enough to really say anything about that)

also on serialism, in addition to the 12 tone music by schoenberg there's also 12 tone music by josef matthias hauer, which iirc isn't exactly serial in the same sense. I'm not very familiar with it but he uses stuff like collections of 12 notes where you can play the first 6 notes in any order, and then play the next 6 in any order, but anyway for serialism, you don't necessarily need the 12 tone rows, they can be made up of any number of notes, and you can still make music in a key(in some sense) even while using 12 tone serialism, because you can have an established tonic even while using 12 tone serialism, and playing notes outside of the major scale, for example, doesn't necessarily mean that the music is not in a major key you can also make serial music where other aspects/elements/parameters are put into rows, not necessarily only notes/intervals (I think you kind of said this but it was sort of ambiguous to me)
@abyssssbmusic1370
@abyssssbmusic1370 Жыл бұрын
quick note, when i say something like key i mean a kind of mental construct of hearing things in reference to a major or minor tonality, so even if you end up playing other notes you can still hear them in reference to that tonality, and when i say tonic i might actually be misusing that if it's only generally used to refer to the tonal center in common practice period music (and stuff along those lines), but what i do mean is just a tonal center in the sense of having a note (maybe with a sense of being home) where you hear the other notes in reference to it
