I'm a danish psychology student. We actually had a social/personality/evolutionary/comparative psychologist professor, who recently focused on aesthetics and wrote a few books on the topic (e.g. The Aesthetic Animal). He actually did research phenomena like cosmetic surgery and why we do it. His work has become increasingly popular with cosmetic surgerons because his work is psychology based within their field of expertise. Cosmetic surgery: something no one needs yet we do it anyway, why? Inner beauty is important but we do have a biology and we can't neglect aesthetics and how they signal and communicate health. For example people who are symmetrical and are thus viewed objectively by society as attractive, also simultaneously grab the attention more of infants (i.e. babies actually look more at these individuals). Symmetry is a universal signal of health and sadly that's somewhat based on evolution. People who are symmetrical tend (statistically) to have fewer health issues and are generally healthier. Hairlines depressingly also signal youth and thus also health. It's not politically correct and it's not like we don't simultaneously don't also have a cultural influence, but it's a factor we can't neglect. Now it might be "such a big deal" for men since women commonly are attracted to partners that are a little older since that generally signals that they have experience and are thus more competent as mates. Men however are attracted to youth and thus typically find younger partners, since youth is associated with health and health means optimal for procreation. Evolutionarily there is a reason why male pattern baldness has been allowed to evolve yet female hair loss isn't as common or as agressive (normally) as male pattern baldness and it usually also happens much later in life (usually in their post reproductive stage). Female hair loss has been significantly reduced by natural selection whereas, this hasn't been the case for men. So, yeah objectively you do look older with a receding hairline, that's a fact but if you decrease the contrast (e.g. shorter hair or hairstyles) or completely remove the hairline (bald) this can improve it. Now the issue is that not everyone can pull off the bald look lol. We all pray we come out looking like Travolta or Willis, but for some of us that just isn't the case. Aesthetics do mean something (not just on a shallow or moral level) no matter how much we value inner beauty.

Noticed I was having diffuse thinning/frontal hairline recession around 24 years olds. Didn’t do anything about it until 27 and it was the best decision I’ve ever made. I started oral Dutasteride 0.5 mg and take it on Monday, Wednesday, Friday. I also take oral minoxidil 5mg daily. I have been on this regiment for over 2 years now and have seen incredible results. Went from a Norwood 3 to a Norwood 2 (I think I’m back to my mature hairline). Overall density is back to where it was before I noticed the thinning (which has resulted in my hair looking darker). Just thought I’d share my experience in case it helps someone P.S- I took 1mg oral finasteride for 1 year prior to this regiment, but did not notice any regrowth. It only halted my hair loss which is why I switched to Dutasteride to achieve better results. I have had a slight decrease in libido, but could be due to the placebo affect or increase in age. Probably wouldn’t of noticed it unless unless someone told me it was a side effect

I just shaved my head today. You can see from my profile picture and my videos that I actually appear in, I have had long hair since 13-14 (I'm 20 now). I noticed just HOW thin my hair was, and didn't want to keep feeling embarrassed without a hat. I've gotten back to using minoxidil solution and biotin vitamins, but if my hair is going to grow back fuller it will take a long time to catch up with how long my remaining hair was. This was a VERY stressful situation for me as I have always felt pride from my hair and have been fairly androgynous my entire teenage/young adult life. Let alone being in a touring metal band with a bassist with long, gorgeous, silky hair, and a singer with thick curly hair. I must say this feels very nice to not be worried about it anymore. My gf of 4 years said it reminds her of the protagonist of Hitman. I'm still going to wear eye makeup and still have my piercings, but I'm really excited to be in the same clan as David Draiman, Kratos, and Dwayne Johnson!! Side note I have toyed with the idea of getting Norse skull tattoos if I keep it shaved, but I may just have the good ole Walter White as is.

12:56 I’m sorry Dr. Linkoff, i have to partially disagree with something you said “NO ONE NEEDS (cosmetic surgery) IT”….except when it comes to “cosmetic” procedures that restore function. Dental “cosmetic” surgery isnt always cosmetic but its CALLED cosmetic which allows insurance to deny paying for care to restore function…dentures and partials. There are millions who live with no teeth. Just try to imagine eating a normal diet without them. Then realize people lose their teeth because of medical reasons, accidents and hereditary factors. Its not always (and not even that common) for people in developed countries to lose most or all of their teeth from neglect. And many of these people lose most or all of their teeth before 40. That is not cosmetic, that is loss of function, loss of bone. Yet they classify this medical NEED as “cosmetic dentistry”. That is how the united states approaches dentistry. And in 2022, insurance will fully cover transitioning your entire body to look like the opposite sex for your mental well being, but won’t cover preventative “cosmetic” procedures like dental implants or hair restoration for mental well being (and again, the dental part is just as much function as looks). Thankfully, medical conditions that require cosmetic surgery (minus teeth and hair which i believe should be listed as medical when theres a medical cause) ARE treated and covered by insurance in most cases. But if you are mentally suffering because of your hair or literally cannot eat because of your teeth…thats just cosmetic? Nope i disagree, they are NEEDED not just wanted. Especially now that surgery to transform your whole body is covered for mental well being. Side note: i also believe that we need to stop separating mental and medical illness. Mental illness is your brain, an organ just like the heart, malfunctioning. Yet the brain is the only organ we treat differently. I hope one day that disfunction/malfunction of the brain is treated by neurologists just like heart problems are treated by cardiologists. The way the world is now, people are treated like its their fault when their brain isn’t functioning properly because we call it mental illness and separate the brain from our “medical” bodies. I hope i made sense, that was a long one, sorry lol

11:43 that says a lot about what we tie identity to. Kind of hard to believe there’s KZbin channels devoted to this. Shave it, then figure out what to do with the rest of your day. Repeat.

I think I'm thinning around my crown but I don't notice losing hair. No hair on my pillow, no clumps of hair when I wash my hair, no hairs in my hand when I go trough my hair with my hand etc. Would this be good indications that I am not losing hair or can I still be losing hair but not noticing it?
@akalion213 Жыл бұрын
Hair loss doesn't really cause hair to fall out. Your hair just gets thinner and thinner over time until it stops growing

Do you see any female hair loss? It extremely hard in society to be female. I know it's hard for males but If a man goes out in public people don't notice it's normal with all the shaved heads in this day and time. I was just curious?

I am now 24 years old but hairline is getting losing in my left side but in the right side its not really receiding and i dont know why its not the same but i am 24 already i experiencing hair loss everytime i want to try to comb my hair
@UnknownUser_102 ай бұрын
I have a similar experience. For me, my left side isn’t that bad. Yes, it’s recessed but not that bad while my right side is recessed further, like 0.5 to 1 centimeter further than the other side. I wish both sides were like my left. Good thing is I already had that at 19 and I‘m 25 now. Back then I thought I would be already bald by now but my remaining hair is stubborn. I‘m not taking any medication.

I am 25 right now and i am losign my hair line in the right side it is so thin right now I was fat 3 years ago and i decided to lose weight i lost 45 Kg And i changed alot 2 weaks after great results i started noticing my hair loss it wa so hard for me Ps: i went to a doctor and he didnt care at all he told me that i am not the first or the last man who will lose hair
I would rather just be bald completely then be in the process. I shave my head with a 0 length. But my hair grows so dam quick I need to do it weekly or it looks shit. Today I was told “oh you’re balding”. Like no shit right. But because I’m at 3-4 weeks growth my hairline looks fucked. I have hair like Jon Snow but it’s pointless if your hairline is messed up

Hey Dr Linkov, I've been taking 0.5 mg of Dutasteride and 2.5 mg of oral minoxidil for close to a year now along with 2 Folexin supplements daily. I've been able to maintain my hair and see it become denser. However, when I get a buzz cut, I noticed that my hair still appears thin in the crown and the front of my head as oppose to my donor area which is thicker. I'm not sure if I just have fine hair. I also use a Biotin infused Mane N Tail shampoo and conditioner and use a Dr. Pen microneedle. Is there anyway that I can get more density in the crown and the front of my hair? Should I raise my dosage of oral minoxidil to 5 mg instead or take a different supplement? Any advice would be appreciated.
@in2775 Жыл бұрын
The shampoo/conditioner is as good as useless. The only shampoo that has scientific data for hair growth is Ketoconozole 2% Shampoo. The dutasteride is the king of all treatments for hair loss as long as you don't have any side effects. It will prevent any more hair loss and give a bit of hair growth in the first year. By the sounds of it, you started a bit late. You should be using Minoxidil 5% as it's the most effective. Other hair growth stimulants you can use that have data are Alfatradiol, Stemoxydine and Retin-A 0.25.
