we need a public black list with colors from green to red for labels, time to expose them. The screw doesn't go one side only!

People just need to be more honest and transparent about that. After all, lots of money and time goes into promotion. So there is a need to do that and not all artist wanna deal with that side, and I think then its fair. However, the labels should also value the music, take responsibilities for their tasks and treat the tracks and involved work with respect. I see it, the most valuable thing I have is time and I need to treat other peoples time accordingly. And in turn that drives the appreciation for the music and then you'll give it always your 100%.

Great video, Jon. You're doing all upcoming producers and artists a huge favor by enlightening these topics. More videos like these please, and less click baits.

I hope the sub label works out Jon. It would prevent beginning producers from getting ripped off. It's a very sad situation with the labels.

Just curious. What rights protect the artist if they did a song with a label before they ever get to sign a contract with that artist. What happens to the track if no contract is ever signed. Who has rights to this song.

Great Topic. what do you think about digital distributor? (cd-baby, tunecore, distrokid, etc) Do you use it (or have used it)? which one do you recommend?

yes, comparing all the stuff around I also was thinking to cd-baby for the same reason.

TomCasey as an independent artist you have to find promotion after releasing your single with any of these distributors. You submit them to blogs and curators and they put it out there to their following and thats how you do promotion as an independent artist after distributing your single

A project like you have with the sub-label already exists and it turned out pretty well. So it's definitely a good idea and a really good way for you to discover new talents without many financial risks of promotion etc.

Hi, Jon! I'm wondering what would be your opinion on this. If you (as an unknown artist) would get a contract with a big indie dance music label (100k followers on Facebook, let's say), would that be worth it? I mean could you overlook the issue of being paid for your music in exchange for exposure, social proof (you did signed with a big label) and label nights showcases in clubs? What are your thoughts on this? Also, what should we look for when we research for labels? What should we pay attention of when a big label signes small artists? Thank you and best of luck to you. :)

What if we dont have a signed contract, but the label released the track anyway? I didnt like some points in the contract, asked the label owner, didnt get any valueable reply, but they released the track anyway. Of course i havent got any statements so far (and it happened about a year ago....)

Music business is absolutely, just incredibly dodgy and unfair. From what I've seen and experienced, music labels survive because of deals that favour them, as an artist I earn nothing, it's very hard to stay motivated if this keeps happening to you. Young artists should be aware of this and not hope for too much in the first few years of their careers, sad but true...
@Revelries

I really like the idea of the sub-label, I think you should mass release there and the tracks should be youtube copyright free so filmers can use it in their videos as long as they credit the artist/label.

So I've had some pretty dodgy experiences I had to walk away from. This was dealing with these 20-70k follower music labels so some are obviously not legit. I was looking for somewhere moderately trafficked to release one of my first finished tracks. Sent the song out to a bunch of these "labels" and some of them sent back some contracts that made me walk away. Basically the super fine print said that signing the contract GIVES all rights to the song AND the artist name, to the label. That and then they said they paid out 75/25 I was outty

If an artist hasn't signed any papers with the label however there was a contract done for a song in which they aren't doing anything with what would be your suggestion.

I think, most of the producer in their early year need is getting the right promotion rather than money.. Artist name growth surely gives a much more contribution on their music sales rather than always finding "new" sounds for the scenes.. An artist with good growth brand surely an investment since they will take less hassle to promote and market, they product always have the power of self-promote & market.

Makes me very angry also. I got screwed on my first label deal too. Still fighting with a lawyer. very sad. They were super jumpy about limiting the costs part of the contract, which was a HUGE red flag. ALWAYS check your distribution contracts (or any contract for that matter) with a lawyer. A checklist for distribution contracts: www.ddjf.nl/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/CONCEPT-CHECKLIST-CONTRACT-ARTIEST-label-versie-2016-0211.pdf (in dutch)

I pay you 1 usd to buy your tune. the distributor takes 0.2 cents. The label and you split 50/50, so you get 40 cents.

At least back in the day, Artists could hire a studio for a couple of hours, master a track, then cut 250-500 12 inch, white labels/dubplates. Run around a few different citys, underground record shops & pirate radio stations, with the white labels just pressed and try and leave, sell tunes with them. Speaking of Pirate Radio, Check out this documentary, just out, on catch up BBC Follow the link here for the record/vinyl Pirate station docu.... thevinylfactory.com/news/new-bbc-doc-london-pirate-radio-stations/

From the link in link at fanlink.to/sineUP "Prove me your a #Siner :)" ( exact copy paste ) How about not triggering those who care about grammar in a professional organisation by using the correct contraction of "you are" - which is "you're". ;) Also 5:04 "if the label doesnt do any real promotion for you or is not a big label with a lot of followers, then just dont release with that label" --So, how big is Axsens and what real promotion does it do ? Also, can you edit your vids to under 10 mins - around 7 min would be even better. :)
