How Recycled Plastic Combs Are Made

We’ve made more combs this year than any other product, all thanks to this beast of a mould we had made to help speed up our output. This one has 2 injections points, producing a total of 3 long combs and 2 short with each cycle.
The colourway you’re seeing us use here is called ‘Jungle Haze’ which is an HDPE blend made up from post consumer waste. The green and blue comes from bottle tops, the yellow comes from bleach containers and the white is typically shampoo, probiotic of cleaning product bottles.
We redesigned these combs last year to improve the moulding time as well as the comfort when using. Because these are 100% separated plastic, they are fully recyclable, which is why we stamp the Resin ID code on.
These work great as detangling combs, shower combs (since they’re completely waterproof and won’t react with any hair products!) or an every day carry comb.
Buy our long combs here: www.brothersmake.com/shop/p/l...
Buy our short combs here: www.brothersmake.com/shop/p/p...
What shall we show you how we make next?

@rodshoaf
@rodshoaf 2 ай бұрын
@@edharris8761 Wrong... Almost all plastic has recycled content in it. I used to work in the industry and I know what I'm referring to. It's called "regrind". You take the waste, you grind it back up, you then wash it and dry it... Once dried you add it to virgin plastic and then remold it. It's been done for decades. The video here is doing exactly that except on a very small scale. It's also cheaper to use regrind in your plastic as you are using your waste to make new. Go into any plastics molding plant and you will see an area in which they grind defective parts or flash or sprue back into pellets and add it back into the new plastic. Post consumer waste is a different story.. that plastic often comes into contact with oils and grease which means it generally can't be recycled.. the same as paper.. but it can be burned as fuel.. which is what we should be doing with all that plastic that goes to landfills.

@rodshoaf
@rodshoaf 2 ай бұрын
It's not just HDPE plastics that can be reused.. MOST plastic can actually be recycled if it's clean first. The problem lies in post consumer waste plastic. You can't use it industrially if it's got oil or grease on it (even plant based oils such as what you get from food products) because it cost to much to clean it. But you can burn it. It's made from oil.. grind it up and inject it into a steam power plant burner. The same restrictions come from paper recycling.. you can't use it if it has oil on it. Those pizza boxes people throw into recycling bins are totally unacceptable for paper recycling. It goes to the landfill.. instead it should be burned for power.

I feel like the reason big companies don’t make stuff largely with recycled plastics is because they can’t really buy bulk of them similar to the plastic pellets (or whatever else it comes in) that is easy to use without much prep, like shredding it down. Or maybe there is a way to get recycled plastics in the same way new plastic is and I just haven’t discovered it lol
@Jhawk376
@Jhawk376 6 ай бұрын
New plastic is significantly cheaper than recycled. Part of the big cost of recycling plastic is sorting and cleaning. A lot of people put trash in the recycling or put dirty / contaminated items in it. If people sorted and cleaned their items appropriately then it’s possible that it could be more lucrative from a business prospective. Additionally a lot of plastic can’t be recycled. That logo you see on plastic isn’t a recycling logo, it’s a logo made up by the plastic lobby to trick you into thinking it’s recyclable.

Also, the expansion rate of recycled plastic in the moulds can be inconsistent. For combs this is not that big of an issue, but for more tight tolerance parts, it can be problematic. Usually recycled plastic is mixed with new plastic to combat this. Linus from LTT talked about this process when explaining how they tried to make their screwdriver handles from 100% recycled material.
@EldeNice

Not all plastics can be recycled. Plastic is an umbrella term for many different substances. Even plastics that can be recycled will have degraded chemically and be of worse quality so the process of sorting and restoring can be very expensive.

Several hundreds. It’s not a massive chunk of metal, and a pretty simple job for a cnc machine. But you’ve got to pay for the design, the cad file done properly, the time of the cut, shipping and all that. So it adds up. And then the casting material, packaging and all the usual business expenses too. Everything is cheaper with scale, so if you’re wanting to do something like this it’s better to have more moulds made at once. Starting with one mould can be fine, it’s just more expensive and will take longer to get a return on what you spent. If you’re just starting out a silicone mould will be miles cheaper. And then you can melt the plastic or use a 2 part resin to inject in the mould. The main difference is you’re only going to get a limited number of castings from the silicone, whereas the metal will last waay longer. Another benefit of silicone being cheaper is you don’t need a cnc machine. You could make your reference model from anything; clay, wood or 3d print it

I second what the guy above me said. Though a proper multi-cavity mold for a full production injection molding operation would cost at least $20k in startup costs, the cycle time and production increase it would offer is not even funny. The energy used to heat the mold in this video’s particular setup is probably more than the energy required to polymerize more virgin (new) material.

Why did you stamp a resin identification code number into it? Those arent recycling symbols they literally tell you what type of plastic it is. Thats all. Its not recyclable. ASTM international is responsible for these codes and they say on their website they dont signify what is and what isnt recyclable.
@slome815
@slome815 6 ай бұрын
They do though, how do you recycle if you don't know what kind of thermoplast you're working with? 2 is HDPE, you don't want to mix this with things like PVC or PS, so the identification number is key if you want to recycle plastics.
@MoringAfterStar
@MoringAfterStar 6 ай бұрын
@@slome815 my friend, do you go down to plastic recycling plant? Because if you through it into the regular recycling the recycling plant just throws it out as most facilities aren't capable of recycling the material. These numbers are there so the oil and gas industry can pretend plastic doesn't have as much of an environmental impact as it does "see we recycle plastic so give us another tax break government". It's Psyop designed to spread disinformation regarding how recycling works and put unfair burden on the recycling industry.
@MoringAfterStar
@MoringAfterStar 6 ай бұрын
@@slome815 all plastic is only about 5-10% recyclable. It's all pretty much single use, but if you slap a recycling symbol on it people will think it doesn't just go straight into the landfill. Changing minds so the oil and gas industry can continue to rape the planet. And again it is ONLY recyclable if it has a recycling symbol on it, which NONE of the Resin Identification Code Number are. Look up Greenpeaces final report detailing how RICs are a circular claim, and did you read my original comment? "ASTM International is responsible for these code and they say on their website that having a code doesn't mean the material is recyclable"

@satibel
@satibel 6 ай бұрын
not really, most plastics aren't 100% recyclable, if you shred those combs after 2-3 cycles they'd get too brittle for use. IIRC you currently need at least 50-70% new plastic to recycle it that way and keep the material integrity. though there's probably ways to recycle more thoroughly.
