I read the opposite, where the idea to bring in Max Martin and Shellback was was Borchetta's suggestion. This is a quote from an article: “I said, ‘You know, this song isn’t working yet.’ They both looked at me (Swift and Nathan Chapman) with a blank stare. The chorus isn’t elevating like it needs to. Where you’re wanting to take the song, it’s not going there. It needs a Max Martin type of lift.”… At that point Borchetta called Martin. Both Borchetta and Swift agree that it was a turning point for “Red”.

I think that Red is a masterpiece album because it encompasses the whole spectrum, quite possibly better than any of her other albums. It's the album where she still has her country roots but is maturing and yeah I agree that 1989 is the pivotal record but Red was kind of the lead in/transition to the pop era Taylor Swift that we've seen in recent years. It'll be interesting to see how the folklore era goes with so many similarities to Red, as I call it, Red 2.0 lol

Gosh, Red, the memories of Red when it first came out, it came out right when I started my freshmen year in high school and my love for Taylor was growing. I actually brought the CD at my local target and played it until the CS broke (literally lol). What I love about the album is the aesthetic building the bridge of country music, indie rock and pop music, as well as the coming of age lyrics that features regrets, loneliness, celebrating our youth, loss and self reflection, especially considering I was starting high school, having deep regrets what I did and didn’t do in middle school and starting a journey of who I was becoming as a teenager. Also the album packaging and promo started my love for hipster fashion (even doe I hate hipsters for their association with gentrification) My favorite tracks I knew you were trouble Everything changed All too well Begin again We are never ever ever getting back together 22 Red

In my opinion RED isn't a Country record or a Pop record. RED stayed in grey area between those genres and other sub genres that she mixed it for. And why it's still remain of her great record? Cause the unique production & the masterpiece lyrics are the reason. We all know Taylor always do this experimental stuff since the beginning of her career. Yeah it's very risky move but she did a great job with every single experiments. In the terms of quality, I still think RED is her best album. Cause in this record we got all the things we need in an Album. folklore probably her 2nd best Album ever, cause this album have the masterpiece lyrics that can compete with RED alongside with the uniqueness itself such as melancholy production, the melody etc. But the problem is the tempo of folklore is too melow and not everyone likes that. Well these two records are enough to describe what Taylor is. She has known as a really great songwriter and a story teller since the beginning.

RED was the first era i follow from the beginning to end, i discover her with "You belong with me" loved her and remain with "Speak Now", there was something magical about her realeasing promo single track, each songs were different to the previous one (at the time, if i remember correctly, she released "State of grace, RED and I Knew You Were Trouble" as promo track) and wow, the first time i heard IKYWT i was in shock i never expected from her to implement dubstep sound in her music! All Too Well was my jam, the part when she said "And it smells like me" always got me in some way, she sang it with such pain and melancholy in her voice, the imagery in her booklet are very good too! Honestly i feel that her voice it suits better with those kinda of instruments even if i still think that with 1989 e other albums after that she improve a lot lyrically, and Folklore is the proof of that. I get the correlation between Folklore and RED, the first is like winter and the second one is like autumn, they complement each other so well! I honestly can't wait to see what she has in mind with her next project cause it will certainly be different.

So true about the “false start” lead singles! I’ve always said that to friends who have been skeptical of listening to a full Taylor album based on some of her singles alone. Also to me Red is such a monumental album because it’s not only so transitional from a genre perspective but a personal/songwriting perspective which I think you touched on a bit. The songwriting on this album is some of the best and most confessional of her career and definitely showcased her maturity. As for the pop or country question, I don’t think this should be categorised as a country record and I do think it leans more towards pop (especially with WANEGBT, IKYWT, and 22) but I also think she really embraced an indie sound and aesthetic for this album which helped the whole indie/hipster look go mainstream (ironically, and for better or for worse) at the time. Pitchfork called Sad Beautiful Tragic “Taylor on the verge of signing to 4AD”. I could talk about this masterpiece for hours ❤️ thanks for the video!

I find the singles to be so annoying AF, like “I knew you were trouble” and “weEEEEE are never getting back together” I still hate them with every ounce of my being “22” is tolerable and cheeky. Love your content and analysis and I will never tire of saying that. I love you described the single vs album, which is a creative/business decision that boosts the interest in her as an artist (Which I know thanks to your analysis of reputation! :)))) ) Red is one of my favourites by Taylor (up there with Rep and folklore), and what puts it there is that, despite including elements of pop, it feels timeless to me. To your question of whether Red is a Country or Pop record, I wonder if it's meant to be blurred. Building upon the idea that she was trying to convey all the different emotions one feels when they have their heart broken, blurring genre lines was necessary in order to help elevate each emotion. Side Note: The Lucky One is one of my favorite songs by her

I still can't get over the fact that she released an 80's pop sound based record in 2014, and all the other mainstream popstars are doing that just NOW. In 2021. ... She was literally seven years ahead of everyone else. What the fuck

My favorite album is Red. It shows an amazing version of adulthood and she captures that perfectly and the versatile genre is genius. Songs like Stay Stay Stay, All Too Well, I Almost Do, I Knew You Were Trouble are all different genres but tie so well. I would say that Red is my best and most favorite album.
@lochjess23 жыл бұрын
This album has some of her best songs. It has some truly instant classics like State of Grace and Holy Ground and All Too Well. It is her transition between country and pop and just ends up sounding like timeless rock.

Red's anniversary was a couple days ago. This era was very interesting! It's my least favorite album by her, but I love how much of an impact it had on music industry. Truly one of her most iconic albums. My favorite tracks: Red I Knew You Were Trouble We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together The Last Time Begin Again

I think red was a phenomenal change for taylor in terms of everything. she changed her look from curls to straight hair, her style, her sound which became more pop than ever.

Red up until now is my most favorite among her 8 albums. It had never changed, but somehow folklore is challenging it. And everything you said here is trueeee! Why I love Red so much? It has alot of memories for me and the sound of the entire record was so fresh back in the time it was released. And for me, Red is still country. Though the sound is more pop-inclined, the whole record still sounds more country. And I do agree that some of Taylor's recent releases could be traced to an attributable track in Red. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
@popdissected44004 жыл бұрын
I'm dealing with the same thing 😳 I just got into "folklore", even though it was released months ago. It's slowly starting to replace all my faves of hers and is becoming my go-to record!
@tekken4granted9134 жыл бұрын
Gosh! I obsessing folklore more than what I did back to 1989, reputation and Lover. the last great american dynasty is my top track but mad woman - is the song that really explains what I had been through lately. I think, the mellowness of the entire folklore hooked me up, because, since the pandemic started, I have been listening to "folklore'-like albums by some indie artists (e.g. Gregory Alan Isakov). But Red - still holds a special place in my heart. If someday, folklore managed to dethrone Red, my memories with Red still lives on. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

I don’t know how to explain Red. This was the last album I got around to listening to by Taylor. But now that I’m older, I’m glad I didn’t hear it until a few months ago. She really captured all the different emotions and fears around love. I can’t even put it into words. That’s how good she is. I always cry over at least one song whenever I listen. I still can’t believe she wrote All Too Well. I love Begin Again. Red is just incredible. Starlight is so good. Treacherous and State of Grace.. wow. I could go on and on about this album. It really is special and I can’t believe how underrated it seems to be.

I’ve found a new appreciation of RED! When it was originally released, I didn’t allow myself to embrace the fullness of the album because you know, TOXIC MASCULINITY. Now that I’m 24, going to be 25, RED evokes so much emotions for me. I put myself back into the high school me mindset and it so nostalgic for me. Holy Ground, The Last Time, I Almost Do, All Too Well & RED title track I find myself repeating them daily. Given how the album has aged and how long ago it was released, but how fresh and soothing the music is, I think is a true testament to the talent of Taylor Swift.

I’m 17 years old now and, although I was aware of Taylor Swift as long as I can remember, Red was when I was really aware of her and then 1989 was when I started seeing her as a different type of celebrity. Not just someone famous but someone imperative to American culture

It was such a fun era to be a Swiftie at the time. Perfect Album for Taylor at the time with the Great crossover pop tracks that were released at the time. This album always brings up memories from August 2012-June 2014. The Red Tour was amazing with the special guests every night. Her MTV VMA 2012 Performance of WANEGBT was great to watch live at the time and as showed her a different side of her as a performer.This album is that made Taylor Swift an International Superstar as WANEGBT and I Knew You Were Trouble were huge in Europe during that era.It was also the first time she attended every International Music Award Show such as NRJ Music Awards.This is an album that will be remembered from from how it made Taylor the International Superstar she is today.

6:42 THIS IS SO TRUE! As a longtime TS fan, I have been very disappointed with her choice of lead singles. “I Did Something Bad” should have been the lead off for Rep and “Cruel Summer” should have been the lead off Lover
@evll43874 жыл бұрын
For the first question, I would say because Red is Taylor's big transition record in so many ways, more mature, more relatable, first true step for her to crossover from country to pop, and the very first record that make Taylor get recognition about how great she really is as a songwriter and storyteller (shout out to All Too Well). Not to mention that her lost for Grammys Album of the Year with Red made her realize to made her second AOTY and a pop perfection, 1989. For the second question, I would say Red is a mixture, not just pop or country but both. Like, the record has a pop smash hits like We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together and I Knew You Were Trouble, but at the same time it has a beautiful and stand-out country song like Begin Again and the title track.

I think Taylor was hesitant to shift from country genre to fully pop in 2012 like she wasn't certain or confident enough like she did with 1989 so she decided to make a transtional record like Red which is both pop and country to taste the waters. Do I think Red deserved at least one Grammy? personally I don't think so and it's fine. I've come to find that you have to hit some damn specific marks to be able to get a Grammy like its criteria for winning is interesting but somehow not surprising given the fact that it's an elitist award show. Unfortunately, Red was probably not that album they wanted it to win for both Best Country Album and Album of the Year categories. Kacey Musgraves' Same Trailer Different Park was well-deserved for BCA (even Taylor was smiling and clapping for her that night) and Random Access Memories also deserved the award it got. However, Red era was considered big at the time. a #1 song, a continuous more than a million copies sold in its first week. a successful world tour etc. Without Red, we wouldn't see Taylor making headlines in the news nowadays and we would get videos like "Why Taylor Swift disappeared" or "Why Taylor Swift flopped" instead by now. 😅
