How Reliable is a 230,000 Mile Toyota Highlander? | Budget Car Camping | 1st Gen Highlander

After having great success with our high mileage Toyota Sequoia we figured it would be a good idea to roll the dice with another high mileage Toyota when Laiken needed a good daily driver. We needed something good in the snow, something decently efficient, and something that would prove to be very reliable. So after 10,000 miles of use, how reliable is a 230,000 mile Toyota highlander? In this video, we detail a few of the small issues we've had to fix and give our overall thoughts on the 1st gen highlander.

My 02 limited has 152k. Had it since 2015, bought it outright no car payment. I live close to work and my kids schools. At the rate I'm driving it, it will take another 10 years to hit 250k. I don't plan on ever buying another car unless this highlander dies. Best car ever made. If I can make it to 2030 without a car payment I'm a happy man

With oil change every 6 months/5000 miles, it should serve thru 2030. Have you changed the atf? With all warning about atf change at high mileage, I drained and filled the transmission fluid my 2005 HL limited 3 times. The drive seems to have better. Enjoy your HL.

She’s got 270k miles and just took her to the shop for a high mileage tune up. Everything is good to go! The mechanic told us to drive the crap out of it 😊

Toyota Highlander is a great SUV. I have a 2002 with under 40K miles on it. It has the 2.4L 4 banger with the VVTI motor, plenty of get up and go for a 4 CYC, that VVTI gives it plenty of power for my needs. It’s just FWD and I don’t tow anything with it. My Mom bought it brand new and she didn’t drive much. She passed about a month ago, and I took over the Highlander. She lived in Florida so this will be its first winter in snow. Should be fine, I will use it as a commenter car to go to work which is only about a 5 mile drive from my home. The SUV should last me a very long time. Thanks Mom, RIP.😢

Make sure you change your oil at 3,000-4,000 miles. That engine is known to have its piston rings get stuck and burn oil. Common issue with the 2.4L of that year.

And when should the transmission oil have been changed as I don't see any records in his folder. Also looking for a more aggressive tire tread pattern yet quiet. Suggestions greatly appreciated?

@@eaglerider94 Switching to Synthetic is good. Just make sure you use a Toyota Oil filter. They are of the highest quality and are affordable if you buy them in bulk online. Yes, change them hat transmission fluid with Toyota ATF and start having your own maintenance records.

My brother has this car, and I've worked on it. Ran into the coil issue, replaced all coils under the intake manifold(plus spark plugs of course). On the 3.3L, There is a coolant bypass hose underneath the lower intake manifold that can fail(part# 16261-20010), and I recommend changing that as well as the knock sensors. The power steering pump also was an issue, had to change that out with a re-manufactured unit, as well as the high pressure hose, replaced the alternator also, as the bearings failed causing belt slippage. Doing timing belt next with Oil seals and water pump. Also radiator started to crack at the plastic hose part, replaced that too. These old cars need constant maintenance, you get the idea.

Glad I found this review in February 2022 I bought a 2006 Highlander Hybrid Limited with 330K on the clock. It was a 1 owner car and has every single service record from Toyota since it was new in 2005 til the services I've had done in 20222 in less than 3 months I've put 8,000 miles on her. 2 oil changes and a coolant flush and so far she's been Solid. I live in Savannah Georgia. I've taken it to Miami twice 2 weeks in a row back in fourth. I've taken it to Atlanta a few times and even down to Universal Studios in Orlando. This coming weekend I'm getting a hitch installed so that I can pull my Jetski. Looking forward to many more Adventures

Yeah, it's an awesome car! Mine is also a 2007 bought it with 150k. Now is at 360k, runs smooth and reliably. Later this year will be driving from Miami to Seattle and making stops at the major parks including your state, Wyoming, Montana, and of course Colorado. One suggestion: always change oil immediately after the light comes on. That's every 3 to 5k miles.

We had a 2007 Highlander Limited that we drove to a 197,000 miles before we gave it our son. Bulletproof for most of those years. Biggest problem was the lighting harness in the rear of the vehicle. People would stop us and say our brake lights were out on one side or the other. Other than that, it was extremely tight over the years we owned it.

We love our 2004 ,it has had a vsc check engine slight miss fire on for a couple years but it keeps going strong ,fortunately in Yavapai County Arizona there are no emissions tests needed.Great video you two

Hi! Thanks for your video! I just purchased a 2007 Highlander Hybrid Limited w/ 250K Miles on it. The price was right, and I am sure that it will need some work, but I'm banking on Toyota's reputation for dependability! So far, I have changed out the cabin air filter (helped it SMELL better!) changed out 8/10 interior lights to LED's (improved visibility 5x!) and I have lubricated the 4 main seatbelts with Silicone Lubricant to allow them to operate more freely. Foreseeable future projects include: exhaust work, wheel bearings, master cylinder, & parking brake replacement. All small stuff in the grande scheme of things!

I have an '05 V6 Limited at 240k+ miles and other than oil and transmission fluid changes and new tires occasionally, it's essentially maintenance free. I drive it daily + multiple backcountry/mountain dirt/rocky road camping, and the Highlander is a Champ.

The Limited model has temp and estimated MPG, etc. They're great vehicles, we've had one for ~ 100K miles and it's only had minor repairs needed. Roll down back window is definitely a plus, we love our on our 3rd gen 4Runner!

Just bought an 04 limited highlander with the 3.3 and awd 2 weeks ago. I had the vsc and check engine light come on. It was the p0430 code. Noticed the gas cap was a little loose. Replaced the gas cap for $20 and no more lights or codes! Hopefully that helps. Great videos! 👍

I have that same issue! Pep boys said I have a master cylinder out and ABS sensor. I thought it was the gas cap or 02 sensor. Who knows what it is

I have a 2002 Toyota Highlander Limited V6 3.0 2WD Green in color and currently it is at 326,579 miles and I live in Arizona... BUT I had the transmission rebuilt at 250,000 miles, replaced about 4 ignition coils, replaced a passenger front strut, replaced rack and pinion, replaced alternator, and pcv valve. I just recently replaced timing belt and water pump, but I still need to replace the power steering pump.

It’s an awesome vehicle. I had an 01 highlander, but With the 4-cylinder engine and just gave it to a missionary friend of ours a few months ago. It was a great vehicle and still going strong with about 225k miles on it. I didn’t have to replace the alternator yet, but I had 3 coil packs go bad. I changed the brake fluid, power steering fluid (as much as I could a few times), and coolant at 205k miles. I’d recommend replacing those fluids if you haven’t. My calipers were leaking a little fluid so I rebuilt the calipers too. I did a few other things like replacing the thermostat, serpentine belt, and idler pulley, but that’s about it. All in all, the car runs great and shifts pretty good still. That’s about all I’ve done to it other than regular maintenance. It does leak a little oil from the timing cover, but its negligible compared to how much oil it was burning (about 1 qt / 5k miles - so about normal for the 4 cylinder with 200k miles). All the hoses were still in good shape even after 20 years. OEM radiator still too. Just sharing my experience in case it gives you a few things to look out for. Nice buy!

The Highlander is like a mini 4runner, I love it. I test drove a 2002 3L V6 Limited Highlander today with 245K on the ODO and it drives great. Brakes were a little squishy but not unlike yours, it has sat for quite a while (about 100 days) So I'm hoping that is the cause. I'm going back to look at it again tomorrow and I think It will be mine after another look over.

My 07 Highlander has close to 200000 mile and I had the PO430 code come up. I kept clearing it but it wouldn't go away. I took it to the local Toyota stealership and they told me it need a new catalytic converter. I replaced the spark plugs and the code went away. I replaced the plugs myself (not impossible) at a cost for 40 some dollars for OEM Denso plugs. The stealershhip wanted over $500 to replace the plugs.

I got the 04 AWD Limited, same as yours basically, with 330k miles on it going strong! I did the alternator as preventative maintenance, wasn’t giving me and issues, and the starter was the thing that kind of left me “stranded” but thankfully it let me drive it home before it said “NO MORE”. Super easy fix! I hope you guys are loving yours!

I bought a 2003 Toyota Highlander, with about 220,000 miles, about a year ago. It is white so I named her Ol' Pearl! I also had to replace the battery and alternator after a couple of months of owning her. I put new tires on it the day after purchase. We took her on many camping trips last year. The only thing I need to replace as of now are the rear shocks. I am the second owner and she was garage kept by her previous owner. This year we plan on getting all fluids changed, a tune up, replacing the rear suspension, and going on a family road trip. I was very lucky to have found this vehicle and plan on driving her for many more years!

I have a 2004 Highlander with 220,000 miles Its a 4 cylinder and runs like a champ. I have replaced the alternator and water pump at around 150,000 I did replace the radiator at about 175,000 here in Las Vegas. Just tires and full synthetic oil changes every 5,000 miles. My son drives it to school and back now. I will never sell old blue.

Bought my first Highlander this month, 2013. It has 173k and is literally like new, I got it from the dealership so it came with new tires, brakes and new fluids hoping it lasts for 10 plus years. I was wanting a 4 Runner but the more I drive this the more I really am enjoying it. I had a 2015 Kia Optima that got 400 plus miles a tank, so I am still getting used to 17-18 mpg. But glad I got it for family trips to the mountains.

@@TheFraziers it took some time but not overly difficult and its only two plugs. the other 4 easy, use the smallest rachet wrench you can find and some small extentions. I used a small hose that fit the plug to screw them in before tightening with the socket.

I have the same issue with my 2 (be easy on me) Nissan 4.0 Xterra’s. A stubby 10mm ratchet wrench, extendable magnet long curved hemostat’s are the trick. + vids how to vids here on UTube. New subscriber cus, I just fell into a 173k Highlander that hit a deer and did some minor ( plastic bumper, grill, 1 fog light, dent in R F fender ) but mechanically checks out perfect 👌 for almost nothing from an insurance co. & owner negotiated deal. 👍

2013 3rd Gen Highlander Hybrid Limited original owner and put 150k miles on before trading it in on a 4th Gen. Only issue with the 2013 was a driver side power lock actuator that needed replacing. I put 90k miles on a 2021 Highlander Hybrid Platinum AWD and I drive it hard in Sport mode and surprisingly still get around 30mpg. I LOVE the Highlander platform. Safe, reliable, great resale value, and honestly drives like a Camry.

I have a 2005 limited highlander with 256,000 miles comes with the outside temp, and mileage avg in the A/c Climate control screen, and the only problem that I have is change the bank 1 catalytic converter p0420 code on the dash, but afterwards the car is in mint condition with cosmetic wear just in the hood as you shown here in this video, suspension feels great, runs and drive smooth, even is the same color as yours, I love my car.

Yes what about the crooked Shops ( not all of them) that don't do a good job on oil changes , I can't otherwise explain it , why my engine failed at 104000 miles this month, ..2003 v6 RIP , life after death would be with a 65000 miles engine and a loss of $5000😩😱

Great video. Just bought the same car last week with 234k miles. Had to only replace both rear wheel bearings and two strut assembly’s other than that runs like it only has 50k miles. The 2007 I believe was the last year made in Japan. These things are tanks.

I love my 05 highlander. Very smooth and quiet cars to drive. Currently at 237k. Had to do some repairs from a steering rack, struts and springs, and cats. Did cost some money but the car is doing great now. No major engine or transmission issues.

Oh no!! The dreaded p0420 code. In my case it WAS the catalyst. The very 1st yr it was released. 2001 & 2.4 2az-Fe engine. The mechanic told me I would hate the price of around $1280 but I didn't care. Car was already at around 270,000 miles. Now it runs smooth, & I'll most likely change the PCV valve after the next oil change.

My 07 is at 241k. Just replaced the window actuator, (ordered the part and did it ourselves thanks to youtube), which is a common problem. Never had a problem with the alternator. It still has good zip, and handles/ drives well. Original shocks and pretty much everything. Have replaced the brake rotors once, and turned them once. It has just been a great value, and it's been paid for for several years. Through 07 they have a timing belt that needs to be around 120k. Didn't do mine till 160k, and the mechanic said the belt look good still. replaced it anyway along with the water pump since they were already in there. I'm bad about maintenance other than oil changes, bulbs, fuses, wipers, etc., the easy stuff. I dislike going to the mechanic as much as the doctor, and Highlanders are a great way to stay away from the mechanic for long periods of time.👍

@@johngarbarzyk5549 Preventive Maintenance would be; 1.) The Timing chain/belt set (the kit) with this My secret is go with Original Equipment Manufacturer parts (O.E.M.), if you can? When doing the timing chain/belt might as well do the Front Main Seal. I would say every 100,000 miles [to me, does not matter what year, make or model it is] 2.) Water Pump, again go with OEM parts, dealer parts. [Again change very 100,000 miles.] 3.) The Belt Tensioner Pulley and idler pulley. [Change every 100,000 miles.] 4.) Flush out the Cooling System, again 100,000 miles. 5.) The Spark Plugs, wires and Ignition Coils. And remember this is Preventive Maintenance just for The Engine (itself). One issue you may have is the knock sensor going bad. Thats not a fun replacement. Did that on mine a couple years ago.

Other than a battery that went bad in my vehicle, I've kept up with all maintenance in all my vehicles. My family and I have not been left stranded. Just up keep. I've been looking for an off-road vehicle, a land cruiser, tahoe, sequioa or highlander. I haven't made up my mind yet.

I've seen many 3.3 and 3.5 still run really well past 1/2 million mile. Use engine cleaner like lucas or gunk to remove internal combustion deposit regularly will help prevent head gasket failure. Turn AC on when you go up the hill on the hot day will make engine run cooler save both engine and trans. Never drive below 2k rpm when going up hill or trans can damage.

For thermometer issue, I have a 2005 HL. In the central panel for climate control, there is a button for info next to the Mode knob. If I push that info button, it cycles thru outside temp, avg mpg, etc.

I bought a 05 v6 loaded with 98,000 miles on it from a ford dealership down the road from me as a "as is" I did a break line and the 100,000 mile tune up . For the life of me I can't figure out why someone traded it in . I can't wait to put antique plates on it .

I had an 05 highlander with 180k miles. Eventually all the repairs added up and I sold it. They are great cars but you will have to do expensive repairs and many of them. Some repairs I did: AC condenser, temp control replacement, hoses, window lock actuators, window motor, power steering lines, valve gasket, oil leak, struts…it all adds up and then there are major repairs to look out for in the future. Also these vehicles can’t tow very much less than 2,000 lbs unless you have the tow package installed. Toyota’s will not just last forever like everyone says you will have to constantly maintain them and replace parts which will add up. Added to this they get about 20 mpg which was great in 2000’s but will cost you at the pump today. Also small gas tank only 16.8 gallons so range is about 330 miles.

Glad you are here. Have 2003 Highlander with 100200 miles. One owner car. Dashboard lights went out and could only see in a tunnel. Had clusters replaced or fixed. Still not lighting up the dashboard day or night, Anyone out there who can help me?

*These have a timing belt* and are due every 100,000 miles for T-belt and waterpump, and it's a harder job on the 3.3 V6 than the Sequoia 4.7 V8, I've replaced both, our RX330 went 210k on original belt with the previous owner but it was cracked and way past due.

Timing Belt, Timing Belt, Timing Belt! Unless you want to spend time with Sasquatch :) Also old Radiator fluid will gain a ion charge and cause corrosion and wear your battery out. Scotty Kilmer has a good fix on his channel for that. 270,00 miles Uber/Lift in Minnesota and still runs smooth. The only thing that will kill this car is rust and bald tires on a snowy mountain road 😂

Great video guys! As a Toyota mechanic glad you stuck with Denso when replacing those parts. I wonder if the P0420 code was caused by the bad ignition coil from the previous owner who just let it go and then it wiped out the CAT? Where did you guys buy the Denso parts? Also, do you guys still have your Sequoia or did you sell it? Keep up the good work.

Pretty sure the denso parts came from Amazon honestly. We still have the sequoia. This highlander, however we sold and replaced with an 08 highlander.

I have an 07 highlander limited awd v6, (around 250k miles)iv had it for 4 years and use it as a work car, I love it, it goes everywhere like a jeep.. to mention one of your cons, mine actually has the navigation package with all of the touchscreen hvac controls, audio controls, fuel economy, calendar, and ambient temp reading,.. etc.. I was also wondering if yours has the 3rd row seating? It's not much and I rarely use mine but that is definately a nice option.

I have also been battling the 0420 code since I purchased. Replaced all 3 cats and all 02 sensors. Tried all types of snake oils, I gave up.. I just deal with the engine light.

I've got a 2012 Prius Plug-In and want to upgrade to something taller. I've always loved the 02-07 Highlanders. Trying to convince myself that it would be ok to sell my car (142k miles) and get an 07 Highlander with around the same mileage. This would be a temporary solve until I upgrade in a couple years. I just don't want to take out a loan, so I'm still saving up the cash.

I have a 2007 Highlander Hybrid. At 163k my hybrid battery needed replacing. I did. Also I replaced the oxygen sensor. Initially I would get the “dreaded code” and for 4 months it would come and go. Finally I replaced it and the car is good as ever. I am the original owner and cannot conceive giving up this vehicle. It is the best!!!

I have a 03 and it has outside temp. Mine is a Limited. I dont know if that matters. I need new struts and fan. It has 198,000 and runs like a champ.

Mine is at 185K miles.. shocks and struts need to replace (in the works) due to an accident, and an 02 sensor needs to replace. Runs like nothing is wrong with it though. Only thibg I dislike is the ones with the sunroof apparently have a notorious leakage problem that I'm just contemplating sealing the sunroof for. Other than that it's definitely reliable and I'd only get a newer Highlander without a sunroof.

On long trip or off road Carry coils, battery jumper, hoses ,belts,water,.Change rubber oil lines to metal. OBD code reader. Change timing belts at 80,000. The car is a unibody built on the Camry frame and can break if off roading severely. I prefer to rent a car for long trips to save on unexpected breakdown expenses and towing cost which can run far more,.

2004 FWD 4cyl with 123k miles. only things i had to do were the timing chain, last year along with the water pump. Alternator was replaced 2yrs ago. Besides that the car drives great. Just sucks that it's fwd. so i ended up buying an 06 4runner for the winter

I have a 2006 model. You DO have an outdoor thermometer. Push the Info button ; you see your outside temp., HVAC temp., your elapsed time since you started the car, your current mpg, per second, & your overall average mpg. The "Info' button is right above the HVAC & fan speed controls. I have a Limited 3.3.

Thanks for an awesome video. I recently purchased a '07 highlander myself. The battery information doesn't seem right though, the battery voltage read as 12.45V. Cranking at 12.45V Starting Voltage at 12.01V. Charging at No-load voltage: 13.82V and Load voltage at 13.41V. was wondering if a battery replacement should be enough or should I be concerned about the alternator ? thanks !!

Hello, new sub here. Thank you for the enjoyable and no nonsense informative video! In late April 2021, I bought a 2003 Highlander 4x4 3.0 with 267,000 miles on it. It needed a lot of catch-up maintenance work when I bought it, and I've been doing that maintenance little by little every payday. The transmission seems bit clumsy shifting into 2nd gear sometimes depending on how much throttle I'm giving it. Might this be a fluid issue or an electronic issue? The fluid is reddish/grayish and smells of gear oil, Lucas Trans-Fix smells a lot like gear oil, so I'm thinking that someone has added some good ol' Lucas to the mix. Should I be as concerned as I am about that second gear shift clumsiness? Or should I just do several drain-and-fills and be done with it? Also, from a stand still, a full throttle take-off seems quite sluggish, but when the tach hits around 3000 rpm it cuts loose with very ample acceleration. Is it typical for the Highlander with the 3.0 engine to be sluggish from a dead stop? I was expecting it to have more low-end torque than it appears to have. All in all, I LOVE this Highlander, it is my first Toyota...It runs smooth on all 6 cylinders and drives very solid and straight. And the driver's seat is comfortable for my arthritic spine and hips. I fully intend to keep it until the running gear goes up in smoke. Any advice you have will be appreciated. Thanks!
