You forgot one super important factor. Standard oil didn’t take over the oil market, he increased the number of people that could afford to use heating oil by something like 70% by providing kerosene. This is how SO became a huge player. Also, he maintained this “monopoly” by providing oil products cheaply enough that even desperately poor people could use it for heat. The end result of breaking up SO was that oil prices by the 20s was expensive and when the Great Depression hit, poor people were once again unable to heat their homes.

Rockefeller never drilled for oil… he wasn’t an oil man… and nobody at that time thought about the environmental impact. It was a messy business… but not because of the impact on the environment. Rockefeller started Standard Oil as a petroleum refiner… not a drilling company.

Rockefeller has a poor public image/reputation these days but in all honest he was a very kind and generous person. He opened the worlds first "blacks only" college (at the time college was whites only). The college was free for black people and was funded by his own personal donations to it, he's done many great things and is one of the most iconic individuals to ever live in the US. He helped many people thru donations (like hospitals) while also being a large donor to the team which created the first antibiotic/vaccine. He's done many great things and changed the lives of so many people thanks to his wealth and at his death he donated 98% of everything he had to charity yet for some reason he is viewed as a greedy man the basically robbed people... It is no stretch of the imagination to say if it wasn't for him this world in the sense of vaccines, education, technology advances (and a chunk of folks in it) wouldn't be here today.
