How Rick Rubin Almost Ruined Eminem's Career

Across the storied pages of hip-hop history’s books, chemistry between two individuals has yielded no shortage of greatness. From Eric B and Rakim and DJ Premier and Guru through to Hov and Kanye or even 21 Savage and Metro Boomin today, finding the right groove between a producer and a rapper is akin to striking gold and, as plenty of people have learned over the years, can’t be forced. Likewise, if you’ve found that degree of synergy with one artist or beatmaking wizard behind the boards, there is no guaranteeing that you can repeat the feat.
One pairing that learned this the hard way and had to weather a whole host of criticism that besmirched their respective legacies is Eminem and Rick Rubin.

Eminem produced most of his own biggest hits. He's an underrated producer, who writes his own lyrics. He produced "The Eminem show" himself, which went diamond, his most streamed, most famous album to date. He also produced for other people, and wrote a lot of Dr dres songs for him. Luis resto is Eminem's main producer not Dre like a lot of people are brainwashed to believe. Dr Dre has a lot of ghost producers and uses mostly samples where he just takes someone else's music Tweeks it a little, stamps it, puts his name on it and takes all the credit. The bass brothers and Eminem on production is what made his first 3 albums classics not Dre. Whenever your listening to an Eminem song check the song credits for who produced it, you'll see what I mean. The bass brothers (F.B.T) made the best version of Eminem with their production

@@francostrong202 Music is subjective. Eminem and F.B.T (bass brothers) produced most of that album 8 out of 14 songs Eminem has production credit on including the song"stan". The others were mel man and Dr Dre which a lot were samples. The song"kill you" from that album, Dre and Mel man produced. The beat was stolen and Dre ended up getting Eminem sued for copyright infringement. The first album the song"my name is" Dre sampled from labi siffres song "I got the".

Rubin didn't "almost ruin" Shady's career, he brought a different perspective. God forbid an artist does something different. Crazy most people just shit on Eminem for these albums not being the same as his old ones. I bet if he sounded like old Eminem they'd say that he needs to "get with the times." I think this channel needs better narration and stronger argumentative aspects if you truly feel that Rubin "sabotaged" Eminem.

I still blame Rick Rubin to this day for what he did to _“Revival”_ (he also ruined Linkin park’s album 😒) imo if Eminem just did the production himself and kept ppl like Rick away so he wouldn’t have had his opinion skewed on what the album should’ve been or sounded, we would’ve gotten a way better project than what we got, because the subject matter was never the problem. Edit: Also, MMLP2 was an amazing album!

Rick also produced MMLP 2 and that was way better. I don't know what went wrong with Revival. In saying that there were a few hidden gems on there. Castle & Arose are 2 of the best songs he ever did imo and it's a damn shame they were so far into that album, a lot of people probably didn't hear them because of that. Got no doubt they would have been a lot bigger and more fondly remembered if they weren't. I also like Bad Husband, Walk On Water (I never got the hate behind that song), River and I don't mind Pink's hook on Need Me either.

I really like your content. I watch all of your videos. I usually agree with you and your thoughts and opinions in regards to rap/hip-hop. Even if I didn't, I understand and respect the fact that everyone is entitled to their own opinion(s). Ironically, opinions between two or more people are rarely the same. With that being said, Rick Rubin didn't almost tank Eminem's career. I think Dre's production and oversight with Eminem and his albums are unequivocally top teir and unmatched, there's no question there. Regardless, you seriously should revisit both of those albums and give them another listen. When and if you do, actively try to do it with an open min, and leave you bais' somewhere other than in the back of your subconscious thoughts during said revisist. If your opinion doesn't change after doing that, I'd be surprised, but it's fine one way or the other. Both of those albums debuted at number #1 for a reason, and a good one at that. They are legitimately solid albums beginning to end. Both have truly great songs on them. Yes, I'm absoultely talking about Revival, too. There are 3 types of people that think either of them are either middle of the road or outright bad. The first type are obviously the haters, the second type are willingly deaf with a lack of good taste, the third is some sort of amalgamation of both one and two, combined. I don't know if I would personally call them classics landing on S-tier, either. When compared to some of his other albums/projects, that is. They are undeniably A-teir, though. They are what I would consider to be a slight stray from his normal work, that's not even remotely a bad thing, either. People got used to a certain thing, and often reject change before they even consider if the change is for better or worse. I should clerify that Eminem is one of my favorite artists/rappers and his technical skills and rapping ability are undeniable. If someone says he's not good or mediocre, they are simply hating. However, my top 5 looks like this: 1.)Rakim 2.)Kool G. Rap. 3.)Tupac 4/)Big L 5.)Notorious B.I.G. If someone don't consider what my opinion(s) after seeing that, they are either haters and/or deaf. I should clarify however, although Em' doesn't make the cut for my top 5, he does respectively rank in my top 10. hopefully that's enough information about my taste in rap to help you consider my suggestion of revisiting those albums with an open mind. I can almost guarantee you'll change your mind about them if you do. I'm not being a 'Stan' about it, either. They are both extremely underrated albums, though. All because most people are either afraid of change, or they outright avoid it because they are uncultured, uneducated, and live in a microchosm of safety based off of consistant mediocraty. Both are the perfect recipe for illogical hate.

Most people like an artists for specific things, Revival tried to give everyone something to like which ends up meaning that one person who is a fan of one specific thing likes maybe 2 or 3 tracks. And an Album where you like maybe 2 or 3 songs, and someone else likes 2-3 completely different songs, will still have you two agreeing that only 2 or 3 songs are good, which makes it a subjectively bad album.
@MerlautJones

@Spectrum0122 Are...are you being serious? See I learned long ago not to make confident statements like that about a person I've never talked to or met, because usually you don't just end up being wrong, you also end up looking stupid asf 😂 I said i had been a fan of his since his first album, just like I'm a fan of a lot of other artists. Being a fan of someone doesn't mean you pledge blind loyalty to them. I won't "listen to other criticisms"? You're right. Because I'm an adult who doesn't need someone else's opinion for me to decide if I like something or not. But on top of that, here's where you look like some immature, naive teenager: I literally can't stand 'Encore' 'Relapse', 'Kamikaze', and both 'Music To Be...A & B'. I think they're pretty much garbage 🤷🏽‍♂️ But yeah, you hit the nail on the head bro...I'm so biased 🤣🤣🤣

@@WesleyWilkins-qf2kyI’m one of those people. Recovery absolutely is a classic to me it really helped me through similar struggles he faced & it’s full of motivational bangers start to end no skips. Plus it was last album all over MTV, the radio & KZbin here in UK also was during his Era making 🔥 with Wayne on No love & drop the world, he bested 3 goats on forever, huge hits love the way you lie & monster with riri, rapgod def a classic single. Love kamikaze album too. Relapse def is cult classic amongst fans. Eminem show is Ems Magnus Opus but it isn’t his last classic by any means to most hiphop fans around the world.

@jessicarichter6436 The only em albums I really just haven’t cared for were MMLP2 and revival. Largely because of the production. I like recovery. I'll admit, I've been a huge fan of Rubin's since the 90s, when I realised he produced a lot of my favourite music from my whole life. He's a big reason why I got into audio engineering and eventually producing music for others. I got his book the week it came out. I read about 40 pages and gave up. I realised he's a wishy washy hippy with no real knowledge to impart on anybody. He was lucky and was around the right people at the right time. He was willing to put his efforts behind pushing a musical culture that had not been presented accurately on recordings at the time. He made a lot of exceptional albums letting artists be artists. He's not a music producer, he's a musician producer. But yeah, The Creative Act: A Way of Being is an overly pretentious and utterly useless guide to living your life in a creative way. If you watch a couple of long interviews with him, you'll hear the entire book in them.

MMLP2 was good but Revival was so terrible and I definitely blame Rick Rubin and everyone around Em involved with that project including Rosenberg. Like who thought any of those beats sounded good? Who thought that the album needed those pop artist features? It is the weirdest Eminem album for sure. Felt like no one actually cared to make something good. Thankfully Kamikaze after was amazing.
