How Roger Rogerson got away with murder - Neil Mercer PART 1 | I Catch Killers Disgraced detective Roger Rogerson appeared to be a charming neighbour who helped old ladies cross the road. In reality, he was a cold and calculated corrupt cop, whose life was embroiled with murder, attempted assassinations, drug trafficking and gangsters. From the death of an innocent bank manager to violent police shootings, veteran crime journalist Neil Mercer reveals the downfall of Roger Rogerson, and his friendship with notorious gangster Neddy Smith. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ I Catch Killers with Gary Jubelin True Crime Australia Listen on Apple Podcasts ► Connect With True Crime Australia Online: bit.ly/46xCXDb ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ ► Subscribe To Our True Crime Australia KZbin Channel: bit.ly/3iU23Fm ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ ► Follow Us on Facebook: facebook.com/TrueCrimeAustralia ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ ► Listen Now on Apple Podcasts: link.chtbl.com/icatchkillersyoutube ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ 00:00 - Introduction - Neil Mercer 09:27 - Who is Neil Mercer? 12:10 - Roger Rogerson: meeting him for the first time 23:52 - Who was notorious criminal Neddy Smith? 25:23 - Lunch with Neddy Smith 28:57 - When Roger Rogerson met Neddy Smith 41:13 - Murdered in broad daylight 53:36 - Shooting of armed robber Butchy Byrne #truecrime #truecrimeaustralia #crime #crimestory #crimejunkie

I met Roger Rogerson briefly once about 15 years ago when I was managing a pub in the Eastern Beaches. A group of men who had evidently just attended a funeral up the road at the Botany Cemetary behind the container wharves were in the front bar having drinks. They were an eclectic mix of what appeared to be older retired crims & coppers, as well as some younger guys too who were behaving in a very fawning and deferential manner to their elders, and to one older gentleman in particular who was perched in the middle, holding court; Roger Rogerson. Things were a bit busy at the time so I jumped out onto the floor to help the bar staff collect some glasses, and when I walked over to their high table and started clearing it as unobtrusively as I could Rodger turned and addressed me as "Dear Manager" (he surmised from my age and long-sleeved collared shirt that I was the guy in charge) and then went on to thank me profusely for the hospitality of my staff and "for looking after my mates here". He glanced slightly towards one of the younger guys who then produced a couple of $50 notes that he peeled from a roll he'd retrieved from his suit jacket and handed them to me, with Rodger instructing me to put them in the tip jar behind the bar "for the girls". I distinctly remember two things from that brief exchange with Rogerson: Firstly, his deep resonating voice and measured speech that seemed to convey command and authority and secondly, his piercing blue eyes and memorising gaze that held my attention in an almost trance-like grip. He certainly was a very memorable and forceful individual, for better or for worse. I remember reflecting to myself afterwards that it would much better for one's health to have a man like Rodger Rogerson as a friend rather than an enemy, that's for sure...

I met Mr Rodgerson at STanwell tops NSW when he was running a whippy van, with my first husband in the early 90’s. Very interesting colourful identity. My now husband was a young constable and found one of neddies girlfriends getting rid of a body up on heathcote Road in a shallow grave after a traffic stop coming out of the bush. Back in the old days technology was mostly intuition first. Listening to the old stories about good cop and bad cop there was also good crim bad crim. A mix that came from black and white made grey.

a question i like to ask is "what is corruption?", it seems to be whatever an authority deems it to be, as Warren Buffet once said "you can put a copper on the tail of the worlds most perfect driver for 500kms and he's going to get a ticket", and when all is said and done weather anything has been proven or not you can always bring out the old chestnut "not of good character"

Sounds like this typical cliché "Aussie bloke" was a very complex character. Difficult indeed to say if all the good he did, like helping neighbors was part of a larger manupilation game. Did he really help them with the intend to ask for some kind of refund in the future, like a positive character evaluation should he ever be in trouble ? Or was he really partly very good and nice, without opportunistic second thoughts, something that however came together with a far less recommendable flipside ? The man is no longer. And even if he was still around, maybe even he himself would never have asked himself that kind of questions. Opportunistic people sometimes just act opportunistic, they don't think about whether they are, should they stop with it or on the contrary increase this behaviour. They just do it, without inner search.

I do, as a tax payer. I am also a former NSW police officer. The NSW Police have a long history of imbibing in alcohol, both on and off duty. If she was wanting to acknowledge friendly associates of the NSW Police perhaps a bunch of flowers would be more appropriate.
