How ROGERS gives us terrible service and high prices-and what we can do about it

The Rogers Outage was a direct result of unchecked corporate monopoly.
It gives us terrible service and high bills-and makes Rogers, Bell and Telus BILLIONS in yearly profit.
If we want affordable and reliable service, Martin Lukacs argues, we'll need public ownership.

It is far too easy for corporations and wealthy people in general to influence the government. Instead of public corporations, let's go with multistakeholder cooperatives that are owned by both the workers and the consumers!

They are using deceptive practices , they are charging me extra and wont tell me who these phone #s belong too. I am calling government services in Canada and Roger's is charging for calls to the USA. I need a lawyer who wants to take this on!!

That doesn't make any sense at all how Rogers is charging. AT&T,Verizon,and T-Mobile often treat Canada as a domestic long-distance call on most plans so no extra charges and one can talk all they want.

Since we were forced to give up shaw and Rogers took over the service is horrible. Our internet is much worse than Shaw and now they are saying our landline phone is not regisyered. We've had the same telephone number for over 40 years. The cusyomer service is either horrible or non existent . Please give me my Shaw back .

I spent over 16 hours on the phone trying to get Rogers to cancel my mothers old account when she went into a nursing home! Customer service at these companies is terrible!

Just switched everything from Rogers to Bell. 17 years with Rogers. Now saving $78/month. Bell sent account cancellations to Rogers for me. Took 44 min to set up account and switch everything over. 2 cells and home internet.

It is true that they are going to create more efficiency for them, because Rogers will funal more efficiently money in his pockets! But the security of the user are not there.

The book "The Great Reversal How America Gave Up on Free Markets" by Thomas Philippon speaks to this exact issue. What it states is that the EU solved this problem by creating an independent entity to manage telecom competition that was insulated from lobbying. Result: competition increased, rates dropped to less than half. The USA has been increasingly impacted by lobbying and competition has gone down and prices up. Canada is like the USA but worse!

In Germany,internet speeds are really bad yet services are more expensive than most EU countries. The German government is doing nothing about it due to bureaucracy.

Actually the USA is getting more competition. Fiber optics,fixed wireless, satellite internet,and even some cable broadband providers are ditching copper too.

The Harper Government wanted to introduce competition by allowing American telecom companies like Verison, Spdint and AT&T and other international companies into the Canadian market. I'd like to see the other Canadian political parties do this as well.

The US is not a very good model-they just end up merging and raising prices again, so you'd just create a lobbying machine that would endlessly push for that. The europeans have much better service for much lower prices, and the Urugayan model is probably the best available.

The U.S. has their own oligopoly problem, how is this a solution?
@900Yugo

@@druojajay80It's not so much not allowing foreign competition,the USA allows foreign competition. The problem is are they willing to spend billions of dollars expanding and investing in the network especially in rural areas with little to no population. That's why T-Mobile USA's parent company Deutsche Telekom had to inject billions into T-Mobile USA to improve their network significantly although not perfect. They are catching up with Verizon and AT&T. In Los Angeles,they are the second most with coverage and 1st in speed. If the USA didn't allow foreign competition,T-Mobile wouldn't exist,it would be like Canada.
