I decided to read what could possibly have been the biggest influence on the manga Berserk, which is never discussed. A Shoujo manga meant for young girls.

The Rose of Versailles is one of the darkest manga of its time, presented in a shiny golden wrapper, flowers and sparkles. The story development is masterful and the brutality of the narrative creeps slowly as the story progresses; culminating in a beautifully horrifying depiction of the French revolution.

Also the fact that each character have their motivations which make them develop their own schemes and all of them interwine with each other makes the story events so much intriguing and interesting

Having watched the Rose of Versailles anime I can definitely say Oscar definitely inspired Miura to create Griffith. As well as the Golden Age arc especially the court politics and the different wars were very much taken from Rose of Versailles.

Fact: Oscar was inspired by Bjorn Anderson, who was very popular in Japan.

If you dig even deeper, Oscar’s design and bishonen in general draw much from Death in Venice (1971) actor Bjorn Andresen’s appearance. His fame from the film messed up his life for quite awhile - there’s a whole documentary about this out recently. You may have also seen him recently if you watched Midsommar (2019).

You should remember that he also took inspiration from Guin Saga and many Gekiga, which were non settled on demographics beyond breaking taboos and commercial taboos. Shoujo and Jousei are manga demographics that are extremely underrated and crucial in the development of the most critically important shonen and seinen manga.

I recently read all of rose of Versailles and while I can most definitely see the inspiration to Griffith. I feel there was also a lot of inspiration into casca as well that is a bit overlooked to a lot of people, casca unintentionally has the same role of Oscar, being a woman who decides to disguise herself as a boy and soldier. She also shares similar struggles to Oscar later in the manga of falling in love with men who she can’t get married with, even having the similar wording of struggling with her longing to be a women but never able to truly be a princess like charlotte, yet also never able to fit in the role of a male soldier at times because she’s a women (her having trouble in battle when her first period comes) this is while not as explicit as oscar’s is similar in the core. I also saw the love dynamics between more modern characters of berserk like Franese also gained heavy inspiration especially with her way of having crushes on men she can’t have. (trying to get with serpio who is brother and guts who loves casca) Overall I really liked the series, for really pushing the boundaries of a romance story. (believe me, if I tried to draw the love triangle of this story it’s more like a web)

There could be endless references to Berubara (the japanese nickname for versailles no bara) in bersek. If Griffith is androgynous like Oscar in his physical appearance, Casca is the woman warrior who more directly resembles Oscar in her character. Like Oscar, casca fights in an army, and goes from an infatuation for someone who does not love her back, Griffith, to loving someone like guts who she initially oversaw but who’s kind, cares for her and loves her back. Oscar initially loves Fersen, however her love is unrequited. Then Andrè, her childhood friend and aide, companion and sort of bodyguard, manages to express her love for her, but she does only sees him as a brother figure. However towards the end of the story she gradually accepts and reciprocates his love, and spends a passionate night with him, very much like casca with Guts. Also, during the scene of the court ball she changes her battles clothes for an evening gown, where she shows her more feminine looks, in a scene where she clearly resembles Oscar dressing up as a woman for a court ball. Finally, Guts losses an eye during the eclipse trying to rescue Casca, similarly to Andrè who, in protecting her, loses an eye during a fight he gets involved into because of her.

This is very interesting. I love both series and never got to make those connections between them. And it's great to see Miura did actually acknowledged taking from it. Rose of Versailles can easily make it into a manga top 10, highly recommended.

I really enjoyed the video dude ! The Mangaka of rose of Versailles Riyoko Ikeda is a real genius, especially how the characters are portrayed each character has their own unique characteristics without putting a facade or making it about stupid "gender" stereotypes/roles. I find it really interesting and really like the philosophy of rose of Versailles. The work itself is really outstanding including the fact that its modern and wasn’t really "addressed" in that time line. Nowadays It’s quite hard to find anime related to this type of content cause as you expected the anime industry also changed over the time but well that’s another topic. It’s quite a shame that the shoujo genre doesn’t really have a "big" recognition compared to the shonen genre. Anyways to keep it short if you really enjoyed berserk and rose of Versailles then I can only recommend revolutionary girl Utena to you. Dude this anime is such a beautiful masterpiece that I cannot describe it in words. Revolutionary girl Utena is also heavily inspired by rose of Versailles tbh the best way to describe it to you is that it’s "like" berserk however in the shoujo style. In my opinion the antagonist in revolutionary girl Utena is even more horrific since the antagonist is so realistic and is likely to commit such crimes, which is so cruel to see that you cannot really do something about it. I don’t wanna say to much about it cause it’s really worth to see and give it a try ^^

It's like Griffith and Utena are two sides of the same Oscar coin. We can see that Griffith is a corrupted image of Oscar (he ready to lose all nobility, dignity and virtue for his dream) Utena is an evolution of the sad image (she doesn't have "gender" issues, her hair is long and pink, we can see her legs, she doesn't hide her femininity but still keeps noble and princely image) Both series, Berserk and Utena, talks about power and dreams but in a different light and in a different manner (in my opinion Utena is better as work of fiction and even tops Evangelion by presenting social revolution, clear conclusion and actual quite smart messege to deliver for audience) Wow, what a HOT TAKE

@@arlekino0792 I definitely agree with you ! I really like the similarities in both characters and how they are portrayed even though they seem to be have the same „characteristics” they rather tend to show it off differently. They aren’t portrayed as this „look I’m just a copy paste of Oscar” but rather have Oscars presence & „appearances” it’s like Ying and Yang.

A lil bit about Oscar. Everyone LOVES Oscar: men, women, royal guard, nobles, commoners, childhood friend and even kid! Why I emphasise on kid? Because !manga spoiler! lil prince of France sad to Oscar that he loves her. After his death Oscar made a bitter joke that she could have become a queen of France if not the circumstances. After that fact I started to suspect mangaka about "mary sue" stuff. (> - >)

I mean that’s subjective up to you of what you want, if you want edgy morally grey characters try seinen and some shonen like aot and chainsaw man. If you want power Fantasy try shonen and shoujo, hardcore drama and shit try josei but at the end of the day they kinda all mix nowadays outside their demographics

70's and 80's shoujo and some josei manga are so freaking good!!! They are nothing like you would expect for manga targeting the female readers. It's a complete different universe compared with what Shojo manga is right now. The stories were soooo deep and emotional, and at the same time contrversial and tragic. Check Riyoko Ikeda, Moto Hagio, Keiko Takemiya, Sumika Yamamoto, etc.@@Ravenizsche
