People are good as well as bad throughout every culture and racial groups. There were British people who also helped the Indian freedom struggle. The actual point that astonishes me is that the real history has been whitewashed so much that there are many Indians who think colonialism was a blessing. If history is studied properly, colonialism straight up is out of a horror film. Just that the British had innovated the guns while Indians at that time were still stuck with cannons. The group with the superior weapon has always dominated the rest.

As a French white girl who's been a fan of Indian cinema for years, I liked hearing your experience but also I'm not surprised, it totally confirms what I've thought for a long time, which is that many people would LOVE *TONS* of Indian movies but sadly they don't give them a chance because they heard that "Bollywood is bad, they only do silly romances and dumb action" 😩 I blame journalists for originally spreading these negative stereotypes. Even my best friend used to say "I don't like Bollywood movies" but she literally had never even seen one lol, then I showed her one and she loved it (it was My Name Is Khan) 🤷‍♀️ Since RRR have you watched other Indian movies? Right now if I have to say just one suggestion I'd say Jigarthanda Double X. On Letterboxd it was number 4 highest rated action/adventure movie of 2023. It's a gangster movie with dark humour and political themes + a meta approach in order to create an ode to cinema. It's from Kollywood (Tamil speaking, the other big industry of south India alongside Tollywood). It's a prequel to Jigarthanda (2014). It's only very loosely connected so no need to see the 2014 one (I'd still recommend it because it's great too, but it's on a smaller scale and not as mind blowing as the 2023 one). Also, if you want female led Indian movies or partly female led ones, then I'd suggest the following: Kahaani (thriller) English Vinglish (comedy drama) Chandni Bar (drama) Dangal (sports) Mimi (comedy drama) Hellaro (drama, you might have a hard time finding this one in the US) The Zoya Factor (romcom) Aadai (drama, thriller) Haseen Dillruba (romance, suspense) Phillauri (dramedy, romance, fantasy) Looop Lapeta (time loop thriller, remake of German 90s classic Run Lola Run) Neerja (drama, real story) Gunjan Saxena (same) Highway (drama) Udta Punjab (drama, suspense, dark comedy) Raazi (spy drama, real story) Darlings (thriller, dark comedy) Gangubai Kathiawadi (period drama, biopic) The 5 movies above are with Alia Bhatt, who was Sita in RRR Indian movies have a lot of interesting female characters without ever trying to sound woke. They just let the characters and story speak for themselves which is what good storytelling is supposed to be...

FYI, the scene you used when saying "ridiculous action scene" was from Enthiran/Robot, a sci-fi action film where the protagonist (as seen holding dozens of guns on screen) is a robot. So it is not ridiculous or over the top considering it sticks to the lore of that movie (one of the robot's abilities is exerting magnetic fields) On that note, most the ridiculous action scenes uploaded to KZbin are either from fantasy/sci-fi movies like Enthiran or from spoof movies. Indian cinema has been misrepresented a lot without context on KZbin.

I was just thinking about your accent. Didn't expect to be an English guy, although I knew what Geordie meant. Well, you're right. Similarly, Hollywood style movies are also stereotyped here. People who've never seen a Western film or not used to the syntax, do find it monotonous etc. In India we are used to over the top masala movies. Masala just means a blend or mixture of many genres which always includes action, drama, romance, musical and so on.

You're not wrong..me being an Indian hated alot of Indian movies because most of the time they copied script or songs..but something changed, after death of SSR and covid, people started asking for better content. That south indian movies always had(most of the time). Now they started showing pride in their roots, the origins, our faith. For a white man/women..there are alot of good British people back in the day duing 1800s to 1947, but they were sidelined, they were not given enough power, they made a very very small impact on India. I've visited Andaman and Nicobar islands that hoisted one of the most brutal prisons ever. Right opposite to it was viper island, that hoisted one of the best bakeries of its time. It was polarized back then. White did have privileged..let me give you another example. My great grandfather, during his time, speaking or writing in our native tongue was considered a crime, treason. He had to go to a teacher's home in the precontext of making jewellery and learn to write and read my native language on a plate of rice. That's how bad we were oppressed. But those are bygones.. something just clicks when I watch Kantara, RRR etc. Good to see Indian cinema in the right direction.

Bollywood is a label for only for a region of india that has been dominating and taking over the rest of India. If coming to naming an industry then this movie is part of “Tollywood” which belongs to a southern region of India called Andhra Pradesh state. Thank you for the review! Appreciate it. :)

As an Indian who knows how the horrors of colonisation is still having its effects on us to this day and even for a foreseeable future...u don't have to hate a race ... just isolate crimes and criminals from their racial identity ...race is never in our control... but identifying or justifying a crime based on racial biases are something to be kept in check.... neither colonisation, nor white bashing makes any sense ... crimes are crimes .. and we should all learn from it and see that those don't get repeated period...

There's a video called 'The Danger of a Single story' by Nobel Laureate Chimamanda Adichie. It is an eye opening short video. Most of the western world has spent several generations listening to one single story about India. And all the racism I have seen, stems from that single story, from that single narrative. I do not blame the people who succumb to a stereotype, but I do blame those who consciously propagate it every time they get a chance (hint: I am talking about the news media).

Everythings fine except that symbol in the thumbnail should be straight, not tilted if you are mixing the RRR. Not only Indians but Chinese and Japanese too respect the original symnol a lot. And the original symbol from the movie really has nothing to do with the Germans. English ruled India for 200 years even they know how old the real representation of this symbol is, it was used when that guy was not even born. Thisis the weird thing about west, they make a big deal about things related to them but even though their opperession and manipulation kild millions more from hunger and battle, they don't think it as a big deal.

Bro white racists people use that symbol to identify themselves. They call themselves aryans and they use the very symbol hitler used. He used it correctly. Check on the internet. Type aryans in America something like that. You can find.

RRR is a great movie but Sardar Uddham Singh realistically portrays the atrocities committed by British empire on Indians. The movie was genuinely Oscar worthy but the sad part is it was rejected at the oscars because how it portrayed British. Every British person should watch that movie.

As a non-Indian who got into Indian movies through friends, I truly believe India has created some of the best movies in cinema history to date, the worldwide perception of all Indian movies being “silly” or “unrealistic” is just from a lack of exposure to good content! There are so many amazing regional films from Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam language industries etc that have become my favourite movies. Jigarthanda DoubleX is a Tamil movie that came out in 2023 is my personal contemporary favourite-the campiness, action, intertwined social advocacy/fight against the system theme, and overall badass vibes are so in line with RRR and surpass it in many ways I think. Would highly recommend you to check it out-you won’t regret it 🙌🏽

So it is true. I heard it on some channel on KZbin. Movies are an escape from reality. If you are living a good life you want realistic, close of science and dark movies. But if you live in poverty or middle income families you just want escapism Dance, singing, ridiculous Anti science action scenes. You have so many problems in real life you just want something crazy like Indian movies filled with songs and stupid action because it is your escape from reality. And it seems true. Now more Indian movies have started to making somewhat realistic action movies and less songs and dance. So people are slowly slowly becoming more aware or wealthy than their parents so we young Indians wants some grounded actions (It is small amount of writers and directors who are making it) and you can see this many big budget, big star movies are going flop because we are sick of watching same shit without any story. And west now going through difficult times so now people just like watching something else. Or are sick of watching super hero movies. Which we Indians wanting. Maybe both Indian cinema and Hollywood can go together to make movies for Indian audience so our directors can learn best art from great writers and directors of Hollywood

Hollywood movies were stereotyped as "cowboy" movies in India before the launch of Jurassic park. That single movie changed entire perception. Indian movies are much more than the stereotypes in the west. But that is not going to change anytime soon, because 99.99% Indian movies are made in Indian languages. Only a very few like Life of pi, slumdog millionaire, RRR , Bahubali are released in English. Unless Indian film makers see some value in making movies in English, the stereotypes will continue. PS: RRR is from Tollywood (Telugu movie industry based out of Hyderabad ) and not bollywood (Hindi movie industry based out of Mumbai/Bombay). There are other major movie industry in India like Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, Bengali etc.

I am really late, but one movie to get rid of misogyny is probably My Fair Lady. (If you cut out last five minuites of the film.) It is a story about not being defined by a man. (Again, can't stress this enough. Last five minutes are added for the film to be succesfull at the time when it was released and and it kinda ruins the message.) But thinking about it, I was having problems to come up with something that doesnt forces feminism onto you, but still is strong enough to shift some perspectives.
@AriaIsara
@AriaIsara 6 ай бұрын
IMO as a French fan of Indian cinema, India has a lot of female led or partly female led movies that can be considered feminist but they don't preach, instead they let the story and characters speak for themselves. Either movies with interesting, strong female characters like Raazi (spy drama based on the real story of a young female spy in the 70s), Udta Punjab (suspense/drama/dark comedy about drug trafficking in Punjab, 4 main characters, 2 are women: a doctor fighting against drugs and a victim fighting back), Kahaani (thriller about a pregnant woman looking for her missing husband), English Vinglish (comedy drama about a shy housewife gaining confidence in herself)... or movies that directly deal with feminism like Gangubai Kathiawadi (biopic of a madame who tried to legalize prostitution in Mumbai in the 60s).

RRR best action movie ever, one of the best movies ever made easily. Indians aren’t used to analyzing a movie by its actual merits, they judge movies by fandom wars, ethnic rivalries, and pointless politics. Glad the rest of the world has RRR GOATed. anyway lmao suggestions for overcoming rampant misogyny, cinema from India has lots of great stuff for that, here are some terrific starters: Pink (2016) Dangal (2016) Secret Superstar (2017) Neerja (2016) The Great Indian Kitchen (2021) Gangubai Kathiawadi (2021) Tiger Zinda Hai (2017) Mimi (2021) Parched (2015)

Welcome to the happy side of life. Racism, discrimination and prejudices exist on all sides but to play into them as an oppressor only leads to a life of bitterness. Travel to India respect the culture and the people and you will be accepted as a beautiful guest. Experiences can go bad at times but do learn from them. I appreciate your honest thoughts on this film...if you really want to explore indian movies more, i have afew recommendations (im just gonna copy paste the list ive been extensively commenting on everyone who came across this film and loved it lol) 1)H.I.T. The first case - a no non-sense whodunnit 2)Evaru - Thriller,Drama, excellent cinematography in this one 3)Kshanam - Thriller,drama 4)Major - Based on a real life hero Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan, who gave his life saving dozens of people during the 9-11 attacks 5)Agent Sai Srinivasa Athreya - Comedy,Thriller,Drama 6)Rangasthalam - Drama (starring Ramcharan[raju] in the lead role) 7)Brochevarevarura (yes it is a mouthful lol) - Comedy,drama 8)Sammohanam - Romance,drama 9)Jersey - Drama 10)Eega - Drama,Comedy (directed by rajamouli) Most of them can be found on Prime or Netflix, some can be found dubbed to hindi on youtube (possibly with subs) please note that none of these movies (except for eega) are big budget spectacle movies like RRR, but more grounded in reality films, with good stories and no nonsensical song and dance interrupting the movie (there are songs in ALL of the films i mentioned but they do not break the flow of the film, instead they carry the story forward, that said there is no dancing in these ,except for rangasthalam which has the standard "item number" track)
