Ever since Vladimir Putin took office, he has tried to maintain a tight grip on Russian media, and this grip has grown even tighter since the war in Ukraine. Subscribe to The Guardian on KZbin ► bit.ly/subscribegdn
But as Putin's 'special operation' took a turn for the worse, the Kremlin's propaganda machine was forced to adapt. Thanks to the work of BBC monitoring journalist Francis Scarr, Josh Toussaint-Strauss explores how Russian state media has evolved its messaging since the start of the war.

@@l.d.t.6327 I get it, but first of all, they have been saying that sentence ever since the 2000s. Hardly a defensive move back then. Second, perpetuating this "not interested in politics" bs only further sends the country on a North Korea path. One can refuse to answer instead of pushing forward the claim that has been carefully implanted into Russian minds for over two decades now to depoliticise the general population.

The paradox of Fox News saying they live in a totalitarian country, and repeatedly bashing their political opponents and spreading misinformation, is that if they actually did live in an autocratic state they would have been jailed, executed, or had "unfortunate accidents" a long time ago. Try to think about it the other way around: your picture of us is shaped by your media. We basically have two identical things going on, each believing our own truth. Have you ever asked yourself if everything they tell you is actually true? What makes you think you are not being manipulated in the same way? Crazy times indeed. The truth is always somewhere in the middle, just as there's no total black or white, just gray. Russia is trying to capture the richest places in Ukraine-the mines-and, together with China, reshape the world in a way they want it to be, to fit their interests. The US is doing the same thing they always do: sending a huge amount of weapons, billions of dollars are being burned on the battlefield, their old business scheme keeps the economy alive.

Nice summarization. The root of all this is Russia is in the path to become a failed state (since pre war) because their lack of access to a warm port. Putin knows this for a long time and hence choose the aggressive path of war on Black Sea countries to gain ports and consolidate power around the blacksea. Instead of choosing the more diplomatic approach - because being diplomatic is a threat to his dictatorship it self. So over time, Georgia, Crimea region, Ukraine now, Moldova... these were attacked, or violence was instigated. The mad man needs to understand war is not the answer for the future of Russia, but it only accelerates the eminent Russian collapse. PS: If anyone is slightest doubting the collapse, check Russia's declining workforce. The high pension debt. Amount of Foreign workers coming in against immigration outside. Then obviously this war is killing a lot, thousands of male population. Also again, importantly the amount of access to warm water ports. EDIT Apr 2023 : I am surprised some people are lazy to respond/comment without reading about warm-water ports. They are required for a continuous economy. Much of Russia'n Ports in north get frozen half of the year. BUT Russia is making newer ones with technology to break and remove the ice. HOWEVER THE MOST IMPORTANT FACTOR - MOST OF Shipping lines do not use the northern route because its extremely costly, and so is the opportunity cost extremely high compared to the southern Indian ocean route. I know there are politically divided people here with their own egos. But the world/war/humans in general follow economy. The only way Russia to save it self is having access to southern ports. BUT, War is not the answer or how you go about it. Which you probably know already.

I like your combination of geography and demography, compelling stuff. Add a little psychology to that: Putin was getting an awful lot of what he wanted via diplomacy and limited military engagements. His psychology of growing up in rat-invested projects in the big city, however, leads to a need for total domination. Or something like that.
