I’ve been seeing a lot of people in this section talking about the F35 and S400. While many of the comments have correct information, one thing seems to be lacking. The inner workings of radar and stealth. The S400 can readily detect stealth aircraft through the use over lower frequency radar bands such as the L band. Due to the frequency of the L band, stealth technology is practically useless against it. However, the L band doesn’t offer the search radar a lot of information in terms of discriminating between various contacts. These lower frequency bands offer a general idea of where a contact is but not necessarily what it is. This is where the higher frequency S and X bands play their part. Higher frequency bands have a more focused beam of radar radiation and are thus able to acquire more details on a radar contact. This is where contact discrimination comes from, ie determining if a contact is an F16, an SU30 or what have you. In fact, weapons grade radar locks are almost always acquired with the x band radar frequency. However, this is where stealth plays a part. These more focused beams of radar radiation are more susceptible to disruption from stealth technologies such as stealth coatings and stealthily shaped aircraft. This is where the F22 and F35 have an advantage. Due to their technology, radar arrays have a much more difficult time acquiring and maintaining a high frequency radar lock. Thus weapons grade acquisitions are much harder to maintain to shoot down said aircraft. However, this being said, stealth aircraft aren’t invisible from radar, they simply have radar cross section reductions through their stealth technology. In fact stealth aircraft have a variance of their RCS depending on the attitude of the aircraft in relation to the radar. In layman’s terms, stealth aircraft aren’t equally stealthy everywhere. So various tactics are used by stealth aircraft to maintain their advantage against various opponents. Often by managing their stealth abilities against various detected threats. However radars, like those seen on S400 can and will see stealth aircraft on higher radar frequencies. This is where things get important between the F35 and S400. Stealth aircraft may pop in and out of high frequency radar acquisitions on the ground, but discriminating these acquisitions is very difficult. Meaning, knowing the difference between the F35 and an F22 by the S400 is very difficult. This is why the US keeps its F35 away from S400 users. It doesn’t want to lend information on the difference between the high frequency acquisitions of the F22 vs the F35. Having possible opponents in the dark about the intricacies of their stealth aircraft’s RCS is of paramount importance to the US and why it’s current posture of sanctioning S400 users is maintained. I hope you find this bit of information enlightening. Best regards from the US.
@johncherskov57553 жыл бұрын
It's sort of their fault if the much more costly f35 can already be detected and all that remains is for the f35 to be fed in data on some radar. Only might offer a slight advantage if it's not used for a time, and if used properly; if it can be hit by any older system then what's the point? I believe the future of stealth is in newer drones and other ways, even then, eventually anything might get detected.

@@johncherskov5755 I wouldn’t say that’s it’s greed, as for economic sanctions damage both the US’s and the sanctioned party equally. Thus both sides lose money. So monetary greed doesn’t play a part in the stratagem. I would say it’s more about reducing the proliferation of systems like the S400/500 indirectly. Additionally, the ability of radar to detect stealth aircraft by no means indicates the ineffectiveness of stealth aircraft. Yes they CAN be detected, however that doesn’t mean that they WILL be detected. Does that make sense? The stealth allows for aircraft to have significantly higher survivability in highly contested environments by allowing for deeper penetration of enemy controlled airspace. Which is an advantage that could prove to be key in a tier 1 conflict. The US’s capabilities are greatly enhanced by having fifth gen aircraft like the F22 and F35. These enhanced abilities could prove to be decisive over the majority of would be foes.

With the whole greed thing, I’m merely stating that the sanctioning process is more about geopolitical goals rather than economic ones. Not that greed plays no part in politics or in the military procurement. Just that the sanctioning process is less about greed than other things. That’s all. In a way you’re right about stealth fighters being able to be defeated by lesser technology. But the same could be said for any technology. There can always be a way to defeat a superior foe. I’m just saying that this fact doesn’t mean that stealth is useless or unimportant. There’s a reason that every major global power is heavily investing in stealth. It offers a bunch of advantages that can’t be ignored. Additionally, the F35 isn’t very expensive. Really, it’s a very affordable aircraft. An F35 A costs around 75-85 million per unit. That’s pretty amazing when you consider that a new F-15 costs 88 million and a new euro fighter costs 100 million. For the price, the F35 is one of the very best deals on the market right now. It’s not nearly as expensive as one might think.

The US doesn't want Turkey to have both F35 and S-400 at the same time because S400 radar can be tuned by knowing the path of the F35. Once the optimal settings to detect a F35 are found and its radar signature recorded, these settings and F35 radar signature can be sent to all S-400 systems around the world at other F35's detriment. Since India has the S400 now, the US will have to keep it's F35 far away from it and that make drills and interoperability excercises impossible.

The S-400 uses all radars in the region, including over-the-horizon and even digital television in the decemetric range. The S-400 can act as a control system for an air defense positional area, combining various zonal air defense systems and giving them commands to destroy targets, as well as using missiles of old air defense systems to destroy targets. To deploy communications over long distances, a 15I6ME repeater is used, which provides communication for the 98Zh6E control system at a distance of 30/60/90 km from the 30K6E command post. If this data was leaked to Russia it would allow Russia to further improve the S400 to shoot down F35. So there is a good technical reason for the US not to sell F35's to Turkey. But that doesn't explain why the US might sanction India for buying the S400, when India has no plans to buy the F35? Simple explanation, if u new physics, u can check, that i say next. Firsly, stealt is simple - not visible in some interval of frequencies, u devolop material and for radiowaves (like all radars) it's pretty much possible, but for visual spectre it very hard (from 400nm to 1000nm). Secondly, each radar, that works in interval of wavelenghts for this material and shape (cz radiwaves is big lengths from 10m to several cm), would needed much more power to detect vehicle covered by this material and shapes that was optimized to reduce RCS in this wavelengths. After shooting down F117 or B2 in Jugoslavia war by S-35 (there i maybe wrong, don't remeber system correctly, but this system worked in longer wavelengths and this why could spotted this stealth vehicles), some of pieces travel to russia, and was investigated, that's why in russian SAM's used radars with several general wavelengths (but this idea is general, cz stealth tech was developed and published in USSR back on the days). This is also maybe one of the reasons, why US blocks defense armament (mainly SAM's) from Russia, but also maybe it's so called "general line" of us gov.

It all goes back to early 60s when USA started mastering the stealth technology aircrafts. Therefore USSR comprehended altogether that they are nowhere to imitate American technology. Hence it was the incubation of a new idea for Soviet Russia to rather go for a phenomenal shift towards developing air defense technology to counter the arch-rival superiority of American flawless, much admired air power and their marching towards manufacturing the fourth generation military hardware. Therefore S-400(built with state of the art technology) is far superior than American THAAD(previously offered to us during Obama's administration, which is presently stationed in Guam island).

It was far easier and cheaper for russia to develop and build advanced Sam systems to defend air space rather than building a bunch of aircraft and airfields, facilities, supplies and trained personnel in remote areas of Russian territory for defense. That said Sam systems are a poor mans answer to air power and is typically less effective than manned aircraft (which is what the US prefers to use).

American engineers were quick to apply the scientists theory towards the application involving stealth. Russia didn’t discover stealth. They didn’t even know they had the algorithm for stealth. At a basic level, the S-400's field of view for the search and fire control radar is limited to the horizon of the earth. Because of this common limitation, search radars are typically placed on tall masts to better see over the horizon. An even better solution is to position radars on specialized aircraft, airborne warning and control aircraft systems (AWACS), or on stationary tethered balloons known as “aerostats.” However, without over the horizon sensors, the S-400, and other powerful HIMADS system, are vulnerable to a low-altitude attack by cruise missiles, which, in large numbers, can overwhelm an air defense system.

I'd say that the sanctions are more about preventing Russia from making weapons sales. Stealth technology was never about being invisible. Current stealth aircraft can be detected by US defenses easily. Does the S400 push out the detection distance a bit? yes but not as significantly as other non RF based technologies which are in development. It's not about preventing India from having defense tech, India could build a similar system if it wanted to and the US would not stop them. The US is just trying to reduce the flow of cash to Russia from weapons sales.

Turkey bought S-400 despite their participation in f-35 program because Russians gave them data about how they tracked and target Israeli f 35. That is also the reason, why USA ended deal with Turkey. It can not allow to compromise the myth of f-35 invincibility, because it will affect their superpower image. Finally, Russian arms sales form tiny percent of Russian export (4-5 %), so it is a political move in order to limit number countries wishing to develop millitary cooperation with Russia.

All the abilities of the S400 are a moot point considering the S400 has failed to shoot down a single HIMARS rocket after well over 200 have been launched within range of the S400. A HIMARS rocket has actually destroyed a S400 system. This makes the S400 junk when fighting against anyone with the HIMARS or its' sister the GMLRS. That would be all of the NATO countries. The cost of a S400 system is between 300 and 500 million $ depending on how many add ons you want while the cost of a HIMARS missile is 130,000$. YOU do the math......what would you buy ?

I think you miss the point, or at least don't communicate the point, that every S400 system comes with a team of Russian technicians. As part of their job of deploying the S400, these technicians will gather information about how to best use the S400 against the US and its NATO allies. Clearly, this is a good and sensible plan from the Russian's perspective. Conversely, it is obvious and reasonable that both the US and many NATO countries don't want the S400 anywhere near their hardware since they don't want the Russians to work on optimising the performance of the S400 system against their weapons. Why would they want to give Russia this advance information? Countries like India (and others) need to decide which side they are on.

Engagement radar not only guide missiles it search and track targets to, like patriot radar Detection radar is needed for all-round visibility and target detection at long distances The detection radar is slow since it uses longer wavelengths, it does not allow missile guidance, but it allows you to detect targets at a greater distance Simplified, everything works like this: 1. The detection radar finds the target, then transmits its coordinates to the engagement radar 2. The engagement radar turns towards the target, finds it and start tracking 3. Done, you can launch a missiles One engagement radar can track several targets and attack them simultaneously, but only within its own viewing angle The whole system is modular and can work without a detection radar Engagement radar + command post + launchers = patriot

And that's why Trump cut Boeing because $3 Trillion are in between and F-35 requires 10,000 hours of maintenance just to make it fly. The biggest vulnerability of this system comes from its greatest ability. It's enormous and powerful radar signal. If the system is hidden too well then by the same token it can't see as well either. This means that just like a very expensive stealth fighter that is vulnerable to a missile attack from the S-400, the very expensive complete S-400 system itself is vulnerable to a salvo of cheap radar seeking ground-to-ground or air-to-ground missiles from the enemy. Even worse the S-400 is not only not a stealth system but is worse than a plain ol' non-stealth fighter since the S-400 system is lighting itself up like a beacon. So now you S-400 system needs a missile defense system for each S-400 battery to protect it from enemy missile attacks. This isn't really realistic so instead the only counter to an enemy attack against your radar installations is to have lots of them with lots of reserves, expecting that most will get destroyed in the first moments of any attack. So if you have more expensive S-400 batterys in numbers than your enemy has in cheap radar seeking missiles then and only then can you keep their stealth craft out of your airspace. In war there is never an easy silver bullet to solve any problem.
@laughingdaffodils54503 жыл бұрын
You put the long range search radar in the most central and well defended position, with lots of point defense. It is indeed impossible to hide (from radar.) The other components are less obvious, however. They're all mounted on trucks and can move fairly quickly from place to place, and can be positioned around the central location, at some distance, where they can engage any incoming package long before it's in range to hit that central radar. All of these components can be and often are protected by separate short range systems as well - particularly that central radar. Of course a successful HARM attack on it would degrade the effectiveness of all elements, and of course it's possible, but don't think there aren't countermeasures.
@flipadavis3 жыл бұрын
@@laughingdaffodils5450 The "long range" radar has only 400 km range. The video is incorrect saying it is 600 km. It also doesn't mention that even though the radar can see 400km they don't have a high speed supersonic surface to air missile with any range beyond 250 miles . Even then the 40N6 which can fly at 6 times the speed of sound for 250 miles is not very manuverable and it's intended targets are AWACS and refueling vehicles, not fast manuverable fighters. Point is the S-400 is just one layer and not a silver bullet. It isn't magic and is vulnerable to superior tactics if not fielded in overwhelming numbers.
@flipadavis3 жыл бұрын
@@laughingdaffodils5450 "U.S. warplanes can launch several types of air-launched antiradiation missiles designed to locate active radar stations, notably the AGM-88 HARM which has a ninety-mile range, and the AGM-158, which can traverse up to six hundred miles on the extended-range variant. These could target the radars an S-400 depends on from beyond its optimal range against fighter-type targets. RC-135W Rivet Joint electronic-warfare planes could also assist in detecting the electromagnetic activity around hostile radar sites, making them easier to eliminate one by one from a distance. A common SEAD tactic is to use forward aircraft to bait the defenders into turning on their radars and opening fire-thereby allowing the antiradar missiles to locate their targets."
@laughingdaffodils54503 жыл бұрын
@@flipadavis No, the maximum range of the missile is 400km. The maximum range of the search radar depends on the size of the target, like with any radar - it can track larger targets out to about 600km, typical fighter jets out to around 400km, and stealth fighters or cruise missiles to around 250km. You're right it's no silver bullet, it's not magic, nothing is. But you're wrong in saying they couldn't possibly defend them with point defenses (they do) and in painting the HARM as a magic bullet going the other way. Keep in mind should there be real use of this system, it won't be in isolation. It will be in tandem with an air force of some kind, and even an air force that would be completely incapable of effective offensive action into your airspace may still be capable of effective defensive action, within their own airspace and working together with SAM systems.

To add the US sanctions against potential S-400 buyers, take Turkey where the US really didn't want Turkey to purchase the system, despite not an adversary (and if anything a former F-35 program member). There is a no such thing as a completely invisible aircraft. If it exists, it will have tell-tale signature / emissions etc (its just going to be harder to find them amidst background noise etc). The problem with a country having F-35s and S-400s in close proximity is that the it makes it easy to deduct what kind of emissions / signatures the F-35 leave behind. I mean, you can correlate certain readings picked up by the S-400 with the F-35 that the same country have operating in known flight paths etc. Not to mention there will be Russian technicians and personnel present at least during set up, hence the fear that they will report back on their findings. If you think the US is the only ones being pissed at the IAF, imagine what happened when the Russians heard that the IAF wanted to put European Meteor air-to-air missiles on the vaunted Su-30MKI. Oh imagine having MBDA technicians read over the Bars-radar source code... Good job pissing off both sides!

S400 batteries in Syria already picked up data due to F35 operations of Israel in Syria, and Israel says they did not get intercepted. So either Russians did not intervene, or they simply did not detect and/or identify them. There is more to war than the latest cutting-edge tech. A battalion of these launch systems costs $300 million. Each missile in it, $6.8 million. There are only 32 missiles in a battalion. It's not a cheap system that is easily/quickly resupplied. A U.S. Tomahawk missile costs $1.9 million. There is a cost ratio factor and an economic power difference between adversaries. I.E., who can play the game the longest? Even if this s-400 had a 100% kill capability, the U.S. could easily saturate this radar site with cruise missiles and force them to expend all of their supply. This would render the site useless. If it doesn't have a 100% kill capability, which no system does, then only one of the cruise missiles has to hit its target. Game over. In 2017, the U.S. obliterated a Syrian base known to be operated by Russians. 59 cruise missiles saturated the area. There wouldn't be much that the s-400 could've done to stop that. One could argue that more s-400 missile batteries would've been effective to stop all Tomahawks, but no country interested in the s-400 is capable of playing that economic game.
