I'm getting one of these assuming the pricing remains reasonable. I'm concerned about that though because I don't think Toyota is going to be able to keep up with the demand for this. It makes the non hybrid version absolutely obsolete. Their plan to do 30% of Corolla Cross production in the hybrid is misguided. They need to flip that and do 70% hybrid.

100% agree on size. The Rav4 and more or less all of its contemporaries (e.g. CR-V) have kept growing over the years, presumably to 1-up each other on all the measurements (legroom, cargo capacity, etc.). It is to the point where I will be forced to look at a smaller class for my next purchase.

I’ve only been a passenger in the Rav4 on many occasions but haven’t driven it. I like the look and interior of the Rav4, however. Since I’ve gotten recently in the market for a compact Toyota SUV, I learned about the Cross and see many similarities. The lower price of the Cross is impressive as well. After looking at my share of comparison videos between the Rav4 and the Cross, I have to thank you for making yours a bit more unique in talking about the thickness of the paint and its importance, the quality despite simplicity of the interior, among other factors. I enjoyed your video, and it helped solidify my decision to choose a Cross over a Rav4. I was already leaning that way, but your video was a great help. Thanks 🙏🏽.

RAV4 & Corolla cross are both nice cars. Tough choice. We have RAV4 for 3 years and love it. Beautiful cruiser and surprisingly easy to drive given it’s large size. Feels like it could last years as the hybrid system seems to take all the stress out of the engine at start off speeds. Just eases off the lights and before you know it you’re at 30-40mph. No drama. It has that relaxing feeling for both driver & passenger.

Nice review. You forgot to mention 3 important points, two against and one for the CC hybrid: 1) CC h has a much smaller gas tank than the RAV4 H (40 vs 55 L), so much less range considering that their EPAs are very similar; 2) in Canada, roof rails are ONLY available on the top XSE trim; 3) one advantage in on opinion for the CC hybrid is that they put the high voltage MGR cable connector in the trunk, shielding it from the elements.

I think your assessment is correct. Boundaries have shifted a bit over the years and with new models. The Cross is a like an urban-friendly version of the RAV4. The Grand Highlander, IMO, is a true, ideal Highlander. I think the middle models are in a muddle right now: the Venza, RAV4, and regular Highlander. IMO, the Venza and Highlander distinguish themselves with higher quality interiors, with the Highlander possessing a more roomy interior and greater ride height, and the Venza best suited for frequent highway travel. For the RAV4, stylistically I think it should go in the direction of the FJ Cruiser, and be more like a junior hybrid 4Runner for suburban living and frequent camping. I think the 4Runner could take a few cues from the FJ Cruiser as well.

I would assume this is a press car since the hybrid is not out yet. As someone who also is an automotive engineer the press cars are messaged to the nth degree for things like panel gaps, paint, interior fit and finish, etc. We have even gone so far as to remove seems and had vehicles completely repainted. Those vehicles are gone over with a fine tooth comb and should never be taken as representative of true production cars especially for things like paint and panel gaps. Your other points are completely valid.

An interesting comparison but we clearly rate features very differently. I cannot accept a vehicle which features a 'repair kit' over a spare tire. The Rav4 Hybrid has room enough for a full spare and, given the amount of backwoods driving I do, this isn't a negotiable issue. Plus, I find the Rav4 to be at the low end of acceptable interior height and cargo space - the Cross, even though it is just a few inches lower and narrower, isn't as spacious or convenient per my actual usage. As always, match the vehicle to your intended use! For instance, I was disappointed by the meager towing capacity (on both the Cross and Rav4 Hybrid) which made little sense given the chassis, mount points and Toyota tow bar are rated at 5,000lbs. I ended up buying, in 2021, the Rav4 Prime SE and appreciate the power (302hp), towing capacity (2,500lbs) and fuel economy (84.5 mpg combined, which includes out-of-town excursions to a cabin up in the mountains). The fit and finish is immaculate and after two years I have experienced no issues or problems other than a safety recall earlier this year. What surprised me about the Rav4 Prime was its value as a 'hybrid on steroids'. This works in two ways. First, the Prime can harvest far more power than the Hybrid (useful on long mountain descents) and second you can charge the battery from the engine then use the extra power for passing on uphill gradients. The Prime literally charges up mountain roads! It is, quite impressive. Would I buy the Prime today? Not sure. I believe the Federal Tax rebate ($7,500) has gone because the Prime is built in Japan. Not sure what the situation is with other PHEV's but this would seem to be a major disincentive to consider a Rav4 Prime. As for the handling, well there's not much I can do about the electric steering, but the suspension and tires on the Prime could be rethought. It is clear that in adding extra batteries, Toyota had to 'crank up' the suspension to accommodate the under-chassis batteries, without sacrificing clearance. Unfortunately the Prime really needs a suspension re-tune, but having driven a 2024 model year Rav4 Prime XSE it appears this is 'needs more work'. The Cross felt better on the road but that's just a subjective impression.
@davisonthealist Жыл бұрын
The hybrid tow capacity is low due to the extra strain it puts on the electric motor which powers the ECVT, that's the reason for this as I understand.

I wonder if the reason why the panel gaps are tighter and thicker paint than RAV4 could be due to changes in Toyota quality. As you mentioned, the RAV4 is older than the Corolla Cross. Or because the Corolla Cross is built on a Mazda Toyota plant, you get some influence from Mazda given Mazda builds products that compete with premium and luxury vehicles as well. Sadly the main drawback for me considering a Corolla Cross is the back seat leg room and the tablet-style infotainment that sat on top of the dash.

Not cheap - $399 for the 3D printed parts; then add jack plus wheel plus tire. When ours eventually arrives it'll be time to think hard about it. Have spent 2x $370 in the last year on replacing run-flats on a BMW X1. Never again. Across all cars, inc. EVs, the TCCH wins hands down at least until EVs become properly engineered. We tossed aside Q3, X1, Crosstrek, XC40, ID.4 and [haha] EX30 only for the Toyota to win.

That is true, but for those of us who live in places like Vancouver, New York, San Francisco, etc, spaces are limited and parking spots are absolutely tiny. Sometimes, we can't even fit the RAV4 believe it or not. Something a bit smaller is easier here.

Good review, all these points make sense if you are in the market for a smaller more economical and cost effective vehicle.

David, I am concerned about road and wind noise with the new Cross Hybrid. Some reviews have indicated it is noisier inside underway than the RAV4 which is not particularly quiet..can you or others please comment on this..

My sister will probably trade her Prius for a RAV4 Hybrid or a Corolla Cross Hybrid as she needs a vehicle with the seat bottom higher off the ground. Not only that, she needs a car with wide opening doors, it would be nice if these issues were addressed for older prospective buyers.

Should do a road test decibel level between vehicles. That would be some objective data.

Nice review but it did not include even a quick overview of the exterior and interiors. I’ve heard the cargo area of the CC is much smaller than the RAV4. It would be nice is someone could give a national (U.S.) overview of Toyota model availability. Here in S. Fla. they have zero cars on the lots.
@rachavya Жыл бұрын
As for the size comparison between the two, for me what counts the most is the interior space. The Toyota website doesn't provide certain dimensions for the Corolla (for example, cargo space). Having sat in both, is the difference noticeable?
@thomasromano385 Жыл бұрын
What I understand it's very noticeable in the back seat.

Love the channel and the content. I would count myself a car lover but this car is a symbol to me of what is wrong with the industry right now. If you order this car i would expect you would not get a firm price or a delivery date. My good friend here in Canada has been waiting for his CC for about a list and he was just told he is number 2 on the list. I expect several people are told the same story daily.

Have you checked out the "Open Pilot - Comma 3" Level 2 Self Driving videos? A developer's goal was ... "Get me to Taco Bell" and it drove fine with a Hyundai Ionic. Reading the compatibile car list, your RAV 4's and the Corolla Cross are new enough where it can use this system. A video of you using this system would generate a lot of views.

Good review. My wife and I own a RAV4 hybrid limited . We like it because the seat height is just right for getting in and out. ( we are of an age ) Does the Cross have a similar seat height off the ground ? Thanks

This is the 2nd car review I have seen from you. Excellent, to the point and interesting review! Subscribed. Think this car is perfect for many. Probably highly reliable, economic, practical and looks (imho) very good too. We have a much bigger car, but it 90% of the time it is driven by wife to commute to work. To accommodate the kids, we would need a Highlander or RX.

it's an attractive addition to the Toyota lineup, offering good ground clearance with excellent MPG. Rav4 used to be an agreeable size, now it's too damn big and expensive.

Is it possible that since this car is newer they are still ironing out how to be efficient with the paint? With that said does it make sense to check another model in 6 months
@user-iz3gv5vo6b Жыл бұрын
My understanding is that the Kentucky plant is using a Mazda paint process. Perhaps that is why the paint is thicker than most Toyotas.
