According to the EPA, the national recycling rate in the U.S. is only about 34%. That means most of our solid waste goes to landfills and incinerators - including recyclable items like paper, glass, metal and plastic. Massive amounts of food waste that can be composted is clogging landfills, creating dangerous greenhouse gases. Many cities are starting to tackle this problem by implementing policies to help curb the waste by recycling and composting more. It's known as the "zero waste" movement, and San Francisco is on the forefront. Other cities that have zero waste goals include Portland, Seattle, Minneapolis, Austin, and Oakland. But San Francisco has been the most aggressive. In 2009 the board of supervisors passed an ordinance requiring all residents and business to recycle and compost their waste, making it the first American city to make composting mandatory. Its goal is to achieve zero waste by 2020, and it has diverted 80% of its waste from landfills so far. Now the city is getting attention from all around the world. Government officials from China, Italy, France, Denmark, India and many other countries have visited San Francisco's state of the art recycling and composting facilities in hopes of learning how to replicate its success.

That's what happens when you have a bunch of drug addicts and homeless people who can't do anything but pick up trash for a living in a city of hypocritically selfish hipsters. San-Fran is a goddamn slum. And that's how the Chinese and their proxies want it. What? Don't act like foreign governments can't buy our officials. It's as simple as a pre-arranged "donation" from an "American" shell company staffed by turncoat Chinese-Americans, or even a Dead Drop loaded with illicit money. Sometimes they use couriers from Latin gangs. Traitors. Globalist traitors. All of them.

The other key component Reuse needs to be considered as well as recycling. Here in MN, Goodwill is opening new stores regularly, I can count 5 within 5 miles of my place all opened within past 4 years, gearing up for babyboomers downsizing/dying off...Keeping things circulating also keeps them out of waste stream, or at least delays entry, leading towards zero waste. Online we advertise things for free pick up via trash nothing/free cycle. Great way to get rid of useable/rehabilitable things that would go to dump since Goodwill doesn't take everything.

When I worked in the East Bay area, we were doing similar sorting.. But one of the problems with receiving waste plant, and especially wood waste, is presence of residual toxins from preservative "protective" treatments, paints, etc.. Some woods can still have old layers of lead from paint, or from applications of copper-arsenic, sometimes present in pressure treated lumber. I recall when my city had to cease taking wood waste due to that problem. Wood without those toxins grinds-up for use in all kinds of good recycling processes and projects!.

I think they define waste as the end product that goes to landfills or incinerators. If you're able to recycle that plastic and turn it into more plastic then you haven't created waste, you've created more product. Creating compost is also a great use of food waste, rather than placing it in a landfill where the food is never allowed to fully decompose the food is made into compost and sold. Of course there will always be a small percentage of waste because everything can't be recycled but that's where the first R (reduce) comes into play. Props to SF for taking steps to lower waste.

My city Nanaimo on Vancouver Island Canada has curbside composting and it has helped to cut waste generation by 30%. Our city is at near 70% waste diversion from our landfill. Incineration is a looming concern though, since our landfill is reaching capacity. We need to increase diversion even more. Next step for me is to help push to make a local recycling center that recycles styrofoam and other hard to recycle items a formal city institution and broaden its mandate. People will care for the environment, if it's easy. Life is just too busy and often draining to dedicate much to efforts outside the necessary. Why very efficient curbside collection is a must for busy cities.

I see in other states a real lack of recycling , where they feel it's just easier to discard it. Nearly all apartment complexes don't recycle it's all discarded. And there's a serious slide scale on the repayment of items recycled aluminum $0.30 lbs., stamped isn't correctly , glass $ 0.00 , type 1 plastic $0.00 . There simply diverting it to land fills. Yes Texas , and Colorado I'm talking about you. Californians recycle it's good for the planet and the economy. ♻️

The city was obviously paid MORE by the Disposal companies as reps from those companies were at the demonstration and told the mayor and council members "This won't work". That was 25 yrs ago and we are STILL burying solid Waist So I guess it all depends on WHO owns the "Green Companies",,,huh. Same with Solar and wind turban energy too.

I don't know much about your government, but you can contact them to complain about the problem and demand better waste policies, and/or organize a movement/facebook page/petition and get the support of others affected by this. What I do know is that you can always change your own contribution. Watch zero waste videos on youtube to get inspired to stop contributing waste to the landfill. Bring your own cotton bags to the market to get veggies and fruits without packaging, try to drink tap water instead of bottled if it's safe, replace all your disposables with resusables. Encourage your community to do the same. Sending love and good luck

Actually Sweden gets trash from denmark aswell and england, italy and a bunch of other countries and less than 1% of our garbage goes into landfills so thay Mayor from denmark probably just wanted to travel a little and made an excuse for why he was going to San Fransisco who recycles about 80%...maybe the mayor of San Fransisco should go to Sweden to learn how its done.

in Brussels (at least in my district) since we need to prepare our garbage in bags divided by plastic&metals, paper, organic, bio (green stuff like grass or branches) outside, when garbage collectors come and they see ( yes they are transparent ) or feel that some bags contain something they shouldn't contain they just leave it in front of your house and it's a neighborhood shame if you have multiple bags in front of you house .

Wow so grateful for this! Consumers have a ton of power and impact, but governments definitely need to do their part too. So happy to see the composting being accommodated. Please remember though that recycling is not the goal; reducing waste as much as possible is. Bringing your own bags/containers and buying in glass jars or bottles with a packaging deposit, only this is truly zero waste and the best thing to do! Do your part, as much as you can (: Also remember that the nr 1 most impactful thing you can do for the climate is to stop buying animal products!

not all of us just some. depends who you're talking to and where. some people might just be unaware due to the families they have/places they grew up. I didn't learn about climate change until highschool and my mother, older brother, and his wife deny that climate change is an actual thing. I had to research it and everything since It wasn't really something they talked about except in a bad light. Some people are purposely ignorant while others, such as myself, aren't ignorant by choice but just uninformed.

In my city we installed an incinerator. It burns 690,000 tons of rubbish per year. The end result is power sold to the grid and ash waste that is almost all exported for use as an additional material in roads and other permanent public works construction materials. Ireland exports 320,000 tons of materials for "recycling" as we do not invest in home materials resuse here. Unlike most European incinerators, the waste heat is not used again and just vented. This was supposed to be done 10 + years ago. The post incinerated waste has little value and it generated a vast amount of C02 (as burning any waste would do). All domestic waste here is split by households into Green (recyclable in theory) and black waste (incinerated) with many also having a brown bin (food waste for composing). Waste glass is deposited into industry subsidised glass bottle banks where the glass is crushed and sent for recycling. Without the reuse of waste heat, the incinerator is only 33% "fuel" efficient ie 77% of the wastes energy is either lost as vented heat or is lost in the productions own power needs. Ireland produces some of the highest rates of domestic waste and plastic packaging waste in Europe for a population thats just over 5M people.

then why does Sweden incinerate so much of its waste rather than recycling/reusing/repurposing? in fact, it incinerates so much waste that it imports it from other countries leaving a sizeable carbon footprint in the process. that doesn't sound anything near "10 times better."
