How Sasha the Dachshund Became an IVDD Survivor

"I thought she was not gonna be able to walk again, I even started doing my research on different wheelchairs to purchase for Sasha to get around" -Sasha's owner.
Sasha is a 4-year-old Dachshund, that presented to us on an emergency basis for evaluation of acute inability to walk. On examination, Sasha was not able to move or feel her back legs.
An MRI was performed which revealed a slipped disk at T12-13 and she underwent surgery to remove the disk material. After a course of rest and physical therapy, Sasha is walking again!

Two of my dachshunds have had IVDD. Lots of patience, love, nurture and luck made wonders. One had a permanent limp like Sasha, but she was still healthy to do everything she wanted to do.

My Dachshund is going through her third surgery for IVDD....once in 2020 and twice in 2023 two months apart. It is heartbreaking to know that it can happen again and again no matter how much I care for him.

Our dog had surgery as well. Unfortunately she can not walk yet. Has passed 4 months of rehab 5 days a week. She can walk on the threadmill in water but not outside. They call it a reflex. Since she cant feel her legs she will probably never walk :(

can you tell what kind of therapy was given to her after Surgery. Even my Dachshund has undergone a slip disc surgery since 4 months. still cannot walk. Please help. I am living in India

It depends on the severity of your pet’s initial symptoms. If could not feel legs and still cannot, your dog likely will not walk again. If can feel and move legs then possible and give more time.

Prednisone is an alternative to surgery. We cannot cannot afford surgery as they say it’s 50/50 chance . I hope every dog gets a second chance. 😢

​@@fencerider1492 we were quoted between $4 to $5,000 and like was said no guarantees. Our dachshund is almost 13 years old and this just happened to her four days ago and with no way that we could afford this we struggle to have to put her down but for now I carry her outside to do her business feed her and take water to her because she's on prednisone, muscle relaxer and gabapentin. This really sucks! 😔

@@fencerider1492 thank you my friend, it's been a stressful week now and I to thought about a wheelchair and like you said I don't know if that would be more painful. Idk why it has to be so expensive but I guess I understand. We're going to take it day to day and the vet told us that surgery would be less than 5% successful.
