most American truckers (myself included) would LOVE a modern Cabover. It'd be nice if it came from the brands we know but Scania or Mercedes sending a few units over here could prove well worth it

If most American truckers preferred cabover trucks that’s what the manufacturers would still be building. That style disappeared because once regulations no longer made it advantageous sales dried up.

@CNR>5K, the issue is that the majority of US truckers think that there is more room in your conventional trucks. Still, Bruce has already debunked that theory when he made a video of the comparison between a Peterbilt and the Scania, the Scanaia won, it has more space internally than the Peterbilt, the ride is far superior and the tech is way more advanced. Another point to make is that the Scania that Bruce has got hasn't got a speed limiter fitted like they're required to have in the UK and Europe, so its fuel consumption can be compared to US trucks. Sadly a lot of US truckers can't get past the mentality that if you're not floating gears then you're just a steering wheel holder, they are under the impression that if you drive a truck with an AMTyour not a true trucker. All this tech is designed to make the driver's job easier, it doesn't take away the skills required to do the job in anyway, in fact at the end of the driver might be tired but not exhausted.

And going by the response from all the american truckers they'd all ditch their Peterbuilts and Kenworths in a flash so not sure where this article gets its info. Also Scania don't actually make the long nose cabs or T cabs as they're known, they're converted to long noses by a Dutch company Vlastuin, see UK Trucker Tim youtube channel, he's been over a few times for a factory tour and driven some brand new converted ones back for UK customers, he's currently saving up credits to acquire one himself

The quality of Scania trucks is one of a kind…. I regularly get to drive an old (18 yrs) intensively used (well over 2.000.000 km’s) Scania 164 (2axle, fifth wheel, 580hp V8) The present owner/driver purchased her for little money some 8 years ago with 1.3 mln km’s on the counter after driving her for his last employer… The truck is NOT pampered (and it shows!!) but is treated as a ‘tool’…. He would’ve traded her for another truck long ago if costs or reliability had been an issue anywhere along the line….. but no such thing… she goes on and on and on…. No oil consumption or break downs, apart from an alternator. starter and clutch-master cylinder and some minor welding to the frame to meet annual Technical Control…. Engine and gearbox untouched for the past 1mln. kilometres and likely since new…. Recently he purchased a fairly young ‘Next Gen’ Scania (3 axle, fifth wheel, 650hp V8), also because emission regulations are becoming ever more strict…. The old 164 is kept as a spare back up, and stil used regularly…. And most of all stil an ABSOLUTE joy to drive!!!!

You are dreaming. They are stuck in the 70's with their boxy flat front design. They have a huge frontal area and are not aerodynamic at all. You can only round a box off so much. Our new trucks are tested in wind tunnels and are far superior. They can make it in Europe where they have cramped roads, and length restrictions, but in North America they will never make it until they get with the times like Volvo did for our market. Hello! As being a Swede i am really proud of these trucks and i really hope the americans like them but scania got a lot of smaller engines with 500-600 hp that maybe would be a better choice for the us market considering your weightlimits. The first truck is a testvehicle running on a special permit hauling woodchips to a heatingplant with a grossweight of 98 metric tons (215000 lb) and the truck at 3.00 is a finnish timbertruck where the legal weight is 76 metric tons (167500 lb) and that is right kind of operation for that amount of horsepower. But it is of course really cool to have that kinda horsepower but it might not be the best choice economically.

Scania has been in North America for decades, marketing stationary and marine engines and components. Scania has been selling trucks to the world market as long as anyone, including Mexico and Canada. What this piece overlooks is that Scania is a fully integrated truck manufacturer, from top to bottom. Scania engines were available in Mack trucks here in USA back in the 1980's. Don't you find it odd that Scania trucks are everywhere except in the USA? Do you think is a coincidence? I remember a fleet operator freight hauler in Northwest Pennsylvania that had 140 conventional style Scania trucks on the road. What no one talks about is how Scania got royally screwed over by the EPA when they first introduced emission regulations to US diesel manufactures like Cat, Cummins, Navistar, Mack, and Detroit Deisel. How did Mercedes Benz and Volvo get approval but Scania did not? They have been sore over this subject for forty some years and only now due to the VW Group ownership can you buy a Navistar International truck with a Scania engine in it.

Like others have said about Bruce Wilson. Where ever he takes his 770 V8, truckers admire it and have many questions and like the answers they are given. Yes the US has the long nose and while it may seem favourited it's down to lack of choice. Sadly Bruce had to be made effectively a Scania employee to drive the truck in the US with the truck being in the US 'for testing and evaluation', so him and colleague are the only ones allowed to drive it. If the American truckers were to drive one over what they normally drive, they'd love these cab overs in an instant. Unfortunately the US is a very insular and protected market, making any inroads difficult because if Scania, etc... got in, the home manufacturers would have to greatly and quickly up their game and give the truckers what they want and what they need.

Scania would completely shake the market up and force kenworth and peterbilt etc to start building more reliable and vastly improved interior trucks to give the American truck driver a truck that is comfortable to work in and rides like a Cadillac on the highway and maybe bring the cabover truck back on the highway as long nose trucks serve no purpose over cabover trucks.

So here is my opinions and takes on this, and side note I'm a massive Scania fanboy from the US so I've seen and heard both sides of the coin when it comes to perspectives. Firstly id like to say that there wouldn't be much of a need for a hood variant of the Scania, in fact that's a good marketable strategy they could use when trying to convince people to buy it because of inner city trucking and small tight areas to get into, my source? just look at the Nikola truck its a cabover meant for inner city work, not only that but the hood isn't what turns US truckers away; its mostly the sleeper, they've gotten very comfortable and used to the big sleepers that are already available so giving it an option for a bigger sleeper would be the way to go so in other words, bring back the longline for the US market, there is already conversions being made to existing models so make it an option or even standard and it doesn't even look too bad neither, picture a flat floor cabover with room to walk around and not having to crawl over a transmission to get into the bunk. Now on the other side of the argument i wanna say that US truckers are extremely stubborn people that make the 1940's look gentrified i mean look at what they say about the Volvo, they don't want change, they don't listen to reason, they like things old and shiny and they stay in that mindset, you may be able to convince the big trucking corps to get in on it but O/O's are a whole different animal especially with a truck that doesn't have a lot of chrome by default, It will be very difficult to educate them on how cabovers have changed over the past 30/40 years and a lot of them still live with that knowledge from back then, however the counter argument to that is Australians, they're mindset is probably worse than US truckers being that they only like Kenworth's and that's all, however they've taken in these EU trucks and made them look really good with chrome and colors, and have used them very well for city work and smaller areas, so if they can use them then i think over time public opinion will change for the better and will be more welcoming to other brands.

It is not only Scania, European trucks in general are leading the world. I do like some awesome looking American semi's but those are no match for the vast majority of European heavy trucks. Fuel efficiency, power, torque, comfort, options, safety, handeling and lot of others aspects more. But what I find strange is that almost all of those videos talk about the big boys, not the smaller and medium sized trucks for city delivery. That category is at least as important as the heavy boys. Also here, Europe does make very efficient and powerful models that serves city delivery AND long distance as well if they have to.

Scania used to have conventional cabbed trucks in their regular programme, known as the T-Range, but they were phased out a few years ago due to low sales. Despite of that, it's still possible to get a longnose Scania, as there are specialist builders dedicated to converting cabovers. These are not very common, and are primarily done for showtrucks, but they absolutely do exist.

Scania has had the 770 hp engine for 15 years, already, mac. They are used primarily in the Australian outback, along with the 16 liter, 700 and 750 hp Volvos, to power their Road Trains. They pull 4 or 5 trailers of iron ore. If Cummins can get 500 hp out of their 12 liter, they ought to be able to revamp their old 19 KT engine to provide not 600 hp like it did 40 years ago, but rather an easy 775 hp and 2700 lbs/ ft. between 1200 and 1500 rpm, and as mentioned, 775 hp between 1500 and 1800 rpms. But it really isn't needed on American roads with 80,000 GVWs, as it would not save drivers much time and it weighs half a ton more, decreasing payload and hence shipping revenues. It sure would give cowboys and O.O.s bragging rights about how fast they climbed the mountain!

Scania is not way ahead of what US manufacturing can provide. They are way ahead of what they do provide however. They have little model selection anymore, have stripped down quality on wiring harnesses and air line connectors. Design life of truck is typically 400k. Then they start falling apart. They build the cheapest truck possible and then charge boat loads to fix their garbage. Government smothered manufacturers with rules and then doesn't do anything when they consolidate into monopolies.

@@stevenmiller6725 that's as maybe... But still, Paccar can build a proper truck. As DAF in Europe is owned by Paccar. In the states, the truck market has been more or less been monopolized by American manufacturers(bar Volvo that is) and therefore are hardly challenged. Furthermore, if Scania would enter the American market it would not mean a instant succes as, in contrary to Europeans, Americans would prefer a home built product(rightfully so). Even if the product is flawed in more ways then one. Furthermore, the European cabs are generally smaller then the American ones, so a solution need to be found for that as even a T-cab is ways smaller then the most of the American ones.

Lots of fair points here in the comments, but I think everyone misses that Volvo, which is Scaniaˋs #1 rival, has already entered the American market, and has pretty much just made exactly the same truck as the Americaˋs already run with. My point being, Volvo has everything at their disposal to distrupt the US market and make an American truck with European standards, and yet they choose not to, even if Volvo trucks USA is its own brand, the Volvo truck brands still share many parts, and vovlo is already established in America unlike Scania, they would have a much easier time bringing these standards to the market and selling than Scania. So why aren't they doing it? The only things I can think of is: Cutting costs to sell cheaper trucks to a market thats over reliant on owner operators, and to create competition for their daughter company mack trucks.

The whole point of the cab over design is to give good access to the engine. You just press the button to tilt the cab forwards. Scania doing a US style long nose design would only make access worse, not better. If I were one of the US truck manufacturers, I’d be looking to partner with Scania. Bruce (who has brought a modern Scania to the US) is making considerable waves in the trucker community by showing off just how good it is. He’s creating a lot of low level market demand. The quickest way for an American company to tap that demand would be to partner with Scania, either supporting direct imports or licensing the design and building it in the USA. But if I were Scania, I’d appoint Bruce as president of Scania US Inc, and take on the US manufacturers by manufacturing in the US. It’d take a while to set up, but it’d also take a long time for the US competitors to update and improve their designs to compete.

Scania wouldn't need a long-nosed version for the US, as that's not why US drivers choose those types of trucks. It's all about comfort. A long-nosed US truck is easier to climb into than the older flat-nosed trucks where you often almost need to be a monkey to climb in and out of. That's not the issue with a Scania truck. However, Scania would need to make the Longline an option, as US truckers want more space in their cabins, something the standard-length cab can't offer. And Scania should pick someone else other than Bruce Wilson to showcase their trucks in the US, as he has started to ruin the 770 he brought over to the US by making it 'American', which goes against the whole point of bringing it over from Sweden.

For whatever my 46 years of truckin (anything) having drivin ALL them, including models in this vid is worth. A ‘game changer’ you said….and you also mentioned of ‘market demand’. So obviously also feasibility for Saab/Scania must play an important role. Coz bottom line is, it’s about the bucks. As for the trucks, personally the T Scania model has to be one of the most butt ugly conventional (ie hooded not bonneted) trucks ever produced. But oh what a machine to drive. The same for Scania COE’s (cab over engine), absolutely divine. Yet to wheel and feel of a Peterbilt or a Kenworth with a large horizontal hood, is my preference still, because how they feel…. but NOW at the end of truckin nights and days they’re not all that different as they’re simply machines made of steel. Made to move the same way, not only by what we think, but more so with what we all actually in this case Mechanically feel. So….whether Isuzu or Kenworth or a Nissan or Mack or a Mercedes or a Honda or Harley or whatever choice is able to be had, in whatever country your at, choices the same it seems sometimes, as unlimited as the trucking brands to be had. 🚛😉🌏💜 Kia ora (be well)

Yep, the real factor will be cost, and Trump’s plan to add tariffs to most imports into the USA could be a huge obstacle (unless Scania decide to build their own assembly plants in the USA and hire US workers, assuming the established truck manufactures don’t lobby to prevent it). After reading most of these comments, a few things become clear: 1. USA freight haulage is mostly over roads that aren’t steep and winding (apart from the Rockies), and so don’t always need the large hp and torque that the top Scania and other European trucks offer. The lower gross vehicle mass for most US trucks, compared to Australia, Europe, NZ and other parts of the world, also means that large HP engines are not always necessary. 2. The long distances covered in the USA means that drivers often need to sleep in their trucks, so sleeping room and comfort are a high priority (this is not such a high priority in other parts of the world where distances are often shorter and motels have been invented - yes, it’s meant to be a joke). 3. I get the impression that the USA market is held captive so that trucks produced in the USA are the only ones that can be sold. I may be wrong here, and no doubt there are exceptions (like Bruce trying to get Scania a higher profile amongst drivers and owners), but from a New Zealand perspective it smacks of protectionism and that always stifles innovation (in NZ we can import almost any new truck from anywhere - just look at the amount of videos of NZ trucking to see the variety). 4. I don’t drive trucks for a living (but I do have a license that allows me to drive 6-wheelers and over the years I have occasionally hired a flat-deck with a hydraulic crane (HIAB), and I drove trucks when I was in the army a lifetime ago) but one thing I do like is cab-over trucks because of the good visibility forward. I think the long nose on most USA trucks would make it really difficult to maneuver in confined areas, but I’m sure experienced drivers would have less of a problem. However, from a motorists point of view it scares me when a long-hood truck passes me and I can’t see the driver and he can’t always see me right next to him. I was run off the road some years ago by a Kenworth pulling into my lane (at low speed, fortunately) because the young driver didn’t see me next to him (I was just in front of his mirrors but still behind the front, and I ended up with gashes on my drivers door from his wheel nuts). I think a driver in a cab-over would have seen me no problem. Despite a lot of comments saying that the long-hood on American trucks gives good protection in a crash, then sure, it’s good for the truck driver but perhaps not so good from the perspective of the average motorist. The advent of air-bags, safety belts and proximity detectors are a far better solution to truck driver safety than relying on a bloody large lump of metal metres in front of you to somehow protect you in a crash.

The engine isn’t normally the issue with American trucks 500 hp is plenty it’s the BS DPF/DEF system the EPA mandates the majority of breakdowns on new trucks are with the exhaust system not to drive train and to get those engines to meet the current EPA standards you would then introduce the unreliability comes with the exhaust systems that American trucks already have

The American trucking industry is dominated by corporate fleets. Those corporate owned and operated fleets don’t care about styling their care solely about the trucks ability to make money. If Scania or anyone else can offer a truck that does that better than the American brands it will sell.

Short nose trucks use to have a huge presence on US roads until about the 1990s. Use to be the preferred design for owner-operators. Now days most truckers work for fleets and the long nose is just what the industry makes. Fleets and owner-operators will have no problem switching to the Scania just as long as its more reliable, cheaper to maintain and operate than current offerings.

Scania already made a convetional design, the "T-cab" which shows up in this video a few times. It pretty much failed in Europe, because length regs (a result of the narrower and tighter roads in Europe, where the network is thousands of years old and some of the roads in use today were originally built by the Roman Empire) meant that it was restricted to shorter trailers (Euro length regs include total length of tractor and trailer). In the USA with the 770 engine in it it should do pretty well.

I can see two different positive outcomes of Scania entering the American market. I’m a huge Scania fan and have had some different models in my 12 years as a trucker and loved to work with them and think they would really fit the Americans if they re-released the T-cab (long nose) with a bigger sleeper cab to fit the need of American distance driving. The other positive outcome is that it would put pressure on the already exciting brands in America to meet the competition in both technology, services and driver comfort. Therefore make better deals for the drivers that stick with the already existing brands.
