While Byrne's She-Hulk was a bit too much at times, I loved her. As a teenage girl reading superhero comics I was starved for a female character who wasn't mainly romantic interest or simply serving as background character to a bunch of guys on a team (and solo superheroines were even more rare). And she loved being strong and powerful! A thing I like with your histories is how clear it becomes that invetning a character is just the first step. What makes the difference is the stories and arcs you give after that.

There is a later, 12 issue run with the covers by Kevin Wada, written by Charles Soule and illustrated by a Javier Pulido that was my favorite take on the character. It came on the heels of the Fraction Hawkeye series and had that same street level, Everyman feel over the bombastic cosmic adventures, focusing on her practice, community and supporting cast. She goes up against Matt Murdock in court! Chris also forgot to mention that before the She-Hulk series Byrne wrote and illustrated a She-Hulk Marvel graphic novel. It had a serious tone and was more mature, titillating even and was a certified page turner to young, impressionable teenage Kevin.

I also really like the Charles Soule run, though like the Slott/Bobillo run, the art by Pulido can be a bit polarizing. Soule being an attorney himself, was really able to tap into that side and delivered some interesting situations for Jen to navigate. There's also a very endearing slice of life aspect to the great She-Hulk stories. Between her superheroic adventures, Byrne really let us get a peek at her life between missions. I would extend that descriptor to the current Rowell run which really is letting us see Jen be more human than hero. Her little "fight club" with Titania might be my favorite bit about the recent series.

If they do HFH, whether as a show or as supporting in Daredevil or something, it might end up being Luke Cage and Jessica Jones. That seems like the most organic choice based on the pieces on the board and the dots that have already been connected by the old department. I feel like Danny Rand is not going to be coming back in a major way. At this point, he'd just be "white Shang-Chi", and Kevin Feige is not big on redundancies, so if Rand does come back, it'll most likely be brief (a strong exit) and to set something up. And I doubt we'll see the version of HFH with Shulkie as co-lead. Meanwhile Luke and Jessica raising a child while doing HFH could be a cool premise, and Jen could guest star.

Great episode. You did miss a fairly accessible foundational She-Hulk Story. If you'll remember in the early 80's Shooter started putting out a line of painted square bound, what we would later call Prestige Format "Graphic Novel's". These were entirely different from collected Trade Paperbacks. These were 1 shot larger format stories. Marvel Graphic Novel #1 was the Legendary "Death of Captain Marvel". #4 Was "The New Mutants" the origin and first appearance of the team. #5 was "X-Men God Loves, Man Kills". So some really good stuff in this line. #18 was She-Hulk by John Byrne. It is an awesome stand alone story. And is very much what would turn out to be the bridge story between Fantastic Four and her ongoing Byrne title. It's She Hulk trapped on a (the!) SHIELD Helicarrier fighting a horde of radioactive mutant zombie possessing's cockroaches created by Banner's original Gamma Bomb. It also features the death of a major Marvel Character. The Original Helicarrier. Prior to this story there was only 1 built. With the only other one, a second Heavily Armored variant called the Behemoth used to fight Godzilla, ever seen.

I haven't read the Slott run, but from your description here it sounds like a worthy continuation and worth checking out. One reason She Hulk succeeded despite her beginnings as a copyright placeholder is because she had no iconic status quo that had to be returned to after every deviation. Her cousin started as a tortured loner and despite everything he goes through he always returns to being a tortured loner. Jennifer Walters is under no such restriction, so she's been allowed to develop over time.

I loved Dan Slott's run on She-Hulk; the show seems to be drawing heavily on that version. P.S. I've heard that the Tarzan/Lone Ranger cartoon in the 1970s was going to introduce a character called Spider-Woman; that was the main reason why Marvel rushed out the original Spider-Woman to secure the copyright. The cartoon version wound up being called Web Woman.

Always enjoy these videos, and been a big She-Hulk fan for a long time. So glad they have here back to her classic self in the comics, the way they handled her in Avengers comic was just so badly done. Not just how they portrayed her, but the issue where she is confronted with her past incarnations was clearly a deliberate middle finger to those versions, the fans and creators. Attempting to retcon a core established part of her personally on loving her She-Hulk body and personality into her secretly hating it. You can do something new and respect the old stuff (see Immortal Hulk) but this was clearly a writter using the comic to attack people who didn't like what he was doing and how he was superior to the previous writers. I haven't read Avengers since, worse comic I've read in many years beacuse it was so unprofessional.

I agree totally, the only thing that kind of gets me is that in decades past comic companies used to have a bigger focus on continuity, so you would constantly have these little asterisks on a page that would direct you to read a different comic for more information about what was being referenced. And Marvel in particular had the bullpen, a one-page section in every comic that outlined what was coming, what was on the shelf, and some feedback from the people that worked at Marvel always with a comedic eye. When I was but a young lad with my allowance burning a hole in my pocket, I would often go to the nearest Newsstand and dig through what was on the rack looking for the comics reference from the last Comics I bought. Most of what constituted my collection all the way through to college grew organically as a result of that. These days every comic is written to be part of a four to six issue story arc to make it perfect for a trade, Comics get killed off way too early before they can build any kind of lasting fan base, and there are so many new writers being brought in that it's rare that you see any kind of actual continuity even among stuff currently being released. Not saying that what comes out isn't good sometimes, but I kind of miss that whole deep dive aspect of buying a comic. I could spend my $0.60 and read a 32-page story, but if I wanted to get the full picture I needed to buy another comic out at that time, two Comics that came out a few months ago, and be sure to pick up some Comics coming out next month just to get the full picture and I miss that terribly

Around the time it was published, I think that John Byrne's She Hulk was the funniest comic I've ever read. I was a teenager and was just beginning to know Marvel's characters, and I remember thinking about what goes on at the backstage of comics for the very first time, due to the constant interactions between Jen and Byrne, along with other Marvel associates. That comic really stuck with me from that time on. Recently a bought an Omnibus and I was a little afraid that all the jokes and puns were dated, or not as funny as I remember now that I am an adult, but I've sincerely had a great time revisiting it.

Hey Chris! Do you think you could explore the change in overall art through out the years of comics? I’ve always noticed that the art today is so much more detailed and properly shaded and what not and wondered what caused that change. Is it because artists during this are just over all better than yesterdays (including the same artist who just improved) or is their another reason like a cultural shift of some sort that caused the change in art style today?

This comment needs more exploration because I literally organized an old box of comics I found last night, most of it from the 90s. There were probably about ten or fifteen "indie" comics that were 100% 90's Image style (which arguably snuck its way into Marvel and DC too after Image took off), and the artwork -- while mind-blowing when I was 12 -- is just really, really, really bad knock-offs of Liefeld and Jim Lee. I noticed that sometime in the 2010's the artwork started to take on a photorealistic, almost cinematic look (Daredevil is the one that really stood out to me then). I stopped collecting comics about 15 or 16 years ago and just now recently got back into the scene. I actually prefer the modern, photorealistic, straight lines, attention to monotonous details, and lack of zippers, pouches, arm-bands, ridiculously huge collars, and blobulous zap guns.

While generally I agree, I'm noticing more of what I call "The Byrne Phenomenon" here. Chris is talking about how "the character" developed. Umm, no. The character didn't develop herself. Had Byrne not done what he did, we don't get the She-Hulk of today. As he pointed out, we may not even have gotten Deadpool. Comics became able to support stores entirely by themselves after their popularity sky-rocketed in the late '70s, early '80s. The #1 selling title then? X-Men. No close second. Wolverine? The original artist of the new X-Men didn't like him & *Byrne* made Chris Claremont focus on him more, basically by being the co-plotter almost from the get-go. Those guys worked on Marvel Team-up & the cancelled Iron Fist. In the last issue of that, Byrne was making his influence known. They depicted Colossus & Nightcrawler walking down the street with the latter saying "I won't be using my image-inducer anymore." (NC used it to appear like a normal human). Byrne wanted to reduce the spotlight on him that Dave Cockrum focused far too much on him & shift it onto Wolverine. _Byrne_ gave Wolverine the characterization everyone now loves. So; We have evidence that Claremont used ideas from his artists & wasn't even responsible for all the writing people credit him with, & evidence as well that the changes *Byrne* made were The Reasons for the success of _Claremont's_ supposed work. Hmm. He changed the FF, Superman, She-Hulk *and his changes **_STUCK!_* In the '90s, Marvel had a run of "'Nuff Said" comics spanning all of Marvel. It was a challenge to all creative teams to create one issue told with no or almost no dialogue or even captions. _Before_ that, Byrne had already done this with a story called "The Many Deaths of The Bat-Man" that had many pages where the only dialogue was Commissioner Gordon saying quietly "get out." Byrne showed them it could be done. & you know what he gets for all these things? The companies always try to interfere, the fans simply think of him as a commercial artist with an easily identified style, & the changes he makes that everyone enjoys? They get credited to "having happened" as if it was Their Own Growth & he was at most an accessory. As if he was some passive element in all these things. There is No Person *more directly responsible **_for_* the popularity of comics from the late '70s until now than John Byrne. _No_ one.

One thing I like about the early She Hulk is that she was a criminal lawyer. She was dedicated to justice before she had powers, and the powers allowed her to be more of what she already was. I think a good storyline for her would to put her on a hero team as the legal expert. She would still fight evil, but she would also protect the team in legal issues.
@richmcgee4342 жыл бұрын
Nuts. Byrne's run with She-Hulk may have established her as something really different and worth reading for a lot of people, but even the original run of the book was pretty enjoyable past the stereotypical Stan Lee first issue. She was never a straight Hulk knock-off, and even less so after she opted to stay green full time. Yeah, she had a bunch of C- and D-lister enemies in the early days but the stories were fine, at least on par with the kind of work we were seeing in Power Man & Iron Fist, Ms. Marvel, the Defenders and the Champions. Sure, she's gotten much better over the years, but that's no reason to diss the original run.

The only She-Hulk I've read was the Soule/Pulido run and I really enjoyed it. I'm not a huge fan of Soule's writing, but it was super charming and fun. Pulido gets unfairly maligned for his work, but I like it quite a bit. Definitely want to check out more.

That is my favorite thing Soule has done, and the art fit the the tone of the book once You got used to it. The supporting cast were great and it’s a bummer both they and the series don’t get the recognition they deserve...

This is my favorite take on Jen as well. Only strengthened by my love of Pulido’s simple style. I’d say it’s reminiscent of Toth, Ditko and especially, Steve Rude.

I've read some WW Hulk Era stuff and the occasional major event (civil war and fear itself) but man now I want to get more into She hulk!

I loved the Byrne era of She-Hulk, and I've been enjoying greatly her new series, but I missed Dan Slott's run. Glad to know they're in trade, I'll have to hunt them down!

I wonder how much Harvey Birdman Attorney At Law influenced Dan Slott's decision to make She-Hulk primarily a lawyer with meta elements? It came out four years before the comic.

Bryne's run had a lot of meta elements, he was probably more influenced by that.

Lol, Oh hai you caught me breaking the fourth wall. Your efforts, research and time are much appreciated buddy! Can't say I was ever a fan of she hulk.....hell I wasn't a fan of main line hulk.. but I do appreciate the character.

A great overview & analysis of She Hulk's history & popularity. Slott's She Hulk is arguably her best run & can either be read as 2 hefty TPB or one even heftier omni. But another overlooked and Stellar run is She Hulk's 2014 12 issue run by Charle's Soule & Marcos Martin & various. It follows pretty much on the premise of Slott's rin but now Walter's opens up her own (struggling) law office and is faced with the challenge of winning high profile super powered centric cases with much fewer resources & the stories are informed by Soule's background as a lawyer. This 12 issue run would be my second choice as a definitive She Hulk collection, though her 2022 series is showing a lot of potential to be a memorable take on the character too.

Great episode. Helpful and insightful on this amazing B list character. It's giving me a greater appreciation for the 2nd Solo run that I collected but I didn't like at the time.

She-Hulk was the first book I ever got via a mail subscription. It was my mom’s idea but ultimately I was totally on board. The MadCap issue blew my mind and I’ve been a lifelong fan. I hope the show is good but not matter what She-Hulk is an all time favorite.

I did not care for She-Hulk in the Avengers and secret wars (80's) I distinctly remember her saying "like tubular to the max" . Much better in FF

Jen's like my favourite Marvel character. I have John Byrne,Dan Slott,Charles Soule & actress Eliza Dushku(she voiced her in Hulk and The Agents of SMASH animated series) to thank for that. Also,is the cookie dough parallel a Buffy reference? Lol. AWESOME video as always, man.

I am personally looking forward to "Green, Fangs, and Gavels" the new courtroom based vampire drama coming from Disney+. We all know lawyers are a pain in the neck, but when Dracula becomes the lead prosecutor for NYC, lawyer She-Hulk and her new private detective and expert witness on Vampires, Morbius, get up to legal hijinx next fall on Disney+'s hottest new show, "Green, Fangs, and Gavels!"
