if you want to believe it. But in reality, they have no idea. It's just the best guess based on a few isolated examples in a world that saw species of monstrous thousand pound human cousins living along side nearly modern humans. It's much more likely that humans and pre-human subspecies were as varied then as we are now, and their bodies adapted to their environments, just like every other animal's body does. Humanity's main tool for survival is ease of adaptation. We got every +1 available in it at character creation and put a point in it every level since. This is a narrative supporting puff piece and based entirely on pseudo scientific theories that wildly exclude conflicting data.
