@drewgrimes16516 жыл бұрын
I would like to say that this is mostly correct but it's not 4 times more common in boys than girls, it's just that it presents differently in boys and girls, and the diagnosis criteria was created for boys. For example, I was tested twice, once by a professional who had only had experience diagnosing boys, who concluded I was not Autistic, and then a few years later by a professional who had experience diagnosing boys and girls, who concluded that I am Autistic.

As an autistic person who sees a lot of misinformation about about autism (sadly including this video), I wanted to write a short description of not only what autism is but what it is like to have it. This is based off of my own experiences as well as other autistic people I have talked to. Autism is a different way the brain can be "wired". Some observations may lead an outside observer to think one way, but without the rest of the context it can be very misleading. People with autism take in more information from their surroundings. While doing some activity the neurotypical person (not autistic) may take some time to process said activity and some of their surroundings, an autistic person takes in everything around them that is going on while doing an activity. Take eating lunch in cafeteria for example; while sitting with their friends a neurotypical person will be eating food, talking with their friends, and listening to what they are saying while an autistic person will be doing the same while taking in every sound difference in their friends voice, eye movement, body language, and doing all of these things with anything they also see and hear. Because of that a delay in time to respond may occur as they are taking in and processing more information before they can respond. A lot of autistic people also have Sensory Processing Disorder, which is a disorder that manifest itself in such a way that the individual with it processes their senses either more dramatically or less. Let’s use the cafeteria example again: the autistic may be hearing every noise and conversation at once in that room, and while the lights may be fine for some people, they may be so bright for an autistic person it is physically painful. This can get overwhelming as all of this stimulus can be too much. Stimulus is any information gathered by any of your 7 primary senses: sight, touch, hearing, smell, taste, proprioceptive (sense of where you are in space and movement), and vestibular (sense of balance). While these are external stimuli, internal stimuli can affect an autistic person in the same way; internal stimulus being things such as stress or anxiety to name a few. It is important to let an autistic person know how they live and process information is normal and fine, there is nothing wrong with them. They are perfectly normal people, just with a nerotype that isn't typical. Too much stimulus can cause a meltdown sometimes, or a shutdown. A shutdown is straightforward as they just shutdown like a computer and need to rebute away from all that stimulus. A meltdown is when the autistic person goes into a fight or flight response, where they will act accordingly as does anyone when their subconscious feels threatened. Keep in mind, too much stimulus is painful, and can be drastically so. You could say that a shutdown is when the fight or flight response goes so extreme they freeze. To combat all of this stimulus an autistic person needs to do one of two things, and may sometimes need help doing them: 1.) Remove the negative stimulus, say like going somewhere darker or quieter 2.) Stim. Stimming can be with any of the 7 primary senses as it replaces bad information, or stimulus, with good. This may be repeating some sound, rocking back or forth, touching some textured object, or hand flapping. These are just a tiny few examples of stimming. Stimming is good stimulus, so an autistic person may stim sometimes just because it feels good to do so with no other reason or maybe to express themselves as is natural and feels good to them. Sometimes when an autistic person has too much negative stimulus they may become nonverbal, or in other words may not be able to talk or use their words. Sometimes they may still be able to make sounds, write, or communicate in some other alternative fashion. Some autistic people take in more stimulus than other autistic people, and can be prone to experiencing more meltdowns and being nonverbal. Nonverbal occurs when the mind and body has to divert resources to dealing with other tasks. An autistic person may normally not be nonverbal but become so during a meltdown or when overwhelmed. Sometimes instead of being nonverbal, there might be a stutter instead. An autistic person has a certain amount of “spoons” they have for every day. Spoons are the resources (mentally, emotionally, physically) you can use to do some task. Some days you may have more spoons, and other days you may feel like you have none. Getting up out of bed cost spoons, dressing oneself cost spoons, brushing your teeth, showering, eating breakfast, going to work, going to class, anything you do cost some amount of spoons; with little resources of spoons available, you may only be able to accomplish only a few tasks, and that is perfectly okay. Sometimes a task can cost a lot of spoons, and sometimes the same task may cost more spoons than other times. Sometimes looking at a person's face or communicating with someone can be difficult. Communication is like a dance, and can be very difficult to follow. There are 3 ways of communication: what is said, how it is said, and body language. A person's face goes through a lot of changes over a short period of time to reflect how they are feeling, and looking at a person while talking can take a lot of spoons at time. It can be very overwhelming to try to pick up on a lot of cues people have in any form of communication. A lot of times an autistic person may only focus on one form of communication, if any, to be able to communicate. Communication in of itself (talking, listening, changes in subject) yet alone looking at some, taking in all the noise, and light, among some many things happening at once can be too much. If things feel that way, that everything is overwhelming, it is okay to remove yourself from that situation or choose not to be there in the first place. There is nothing wrong in taking care of yourself.

As an autistic person watching this, I feel accepted in this society. Everyone at my school uses "special ed" or "autistic" as an insult towards each other. They're just neurotypicals and don't understand what autism truly means, it doesn't just mean people are stupid, most autistic people are good at stuff like me. Most neurotypicals that don't understand autism also shine bright lights or scream at autistic people, not knowing how much harm that can do if the autistic person has SENSORY issues.

I remember being diagnosed with Aspergers' syndrome. I was in second grade (I was 6 years old) when i started misunderstanding things, and zoning out so much I was sent to the principal's office. After that, people with clipboards kept taking me out of class a lot of times and asked me questions. My mom later took me to a doctor and he had me do some tests. Ones I remember are arranging blocks to look like the picture on the card, pronounce big words, and answer questions to a lady while i drew pictures and played. Afterwards, they diagnosed me with Aspergers Syndrome. My mom started crying. Years later, I graduated high school with all of my classmates. Today? While it's difficult most days, I get by just fine. Was I bullied as a kid? Yes. Deppressed? Still am. Do i have issues in subjects? Yes, math and science. What am I good at? Music, video games, and Art. How did i get it? Well my mom turns out to have Autism too, because she showed the same traits as she gets older that I had as a kid. Back then, i wished i was someone else, but now, i'm happy being me!

I was diagnosed at 6 years old. I'm 16 now, and I was at a drivers ed behind the wheel lesson a couple months ago. Driving is very stressful to me, and the instructor told me it seemed as if I didn't understand right of way. I told him that I have Aspergers, and he said that the law in my state (Wisconsin) says that people with Autism/Aspergers aren't legally allowed to drive within state lines. My parents and my psychologist looked it up, and it turns out it's not true. Autistic people CAN legally drive in Wisconsin, as long as they have a liscence. I don't plan on getting anymore help from that driving school, and I don't plan on ever driving ever. I'm perfectly fine with taking the bus. I agree, people with autism should be treated like everyone else. Discriminating against the Autistic is very mean, and it should be a law not to discriminate against any Autistic person like the instructor did to me.

I have Asperger's syndrome and trust me, it's not easy having it. we suffer from social anxiety for our entire life, we constantly feel as if we're weird and that we'll never fit in with others, socializing is a difficult task for us, and it usually also comes with a plethora of many other mental illnesses, such as depression and anxiety. But even though I may feel different or out of place, I'm still a human being and I still have emotions and goals that I strive to achieve. I just absolutely DESPISE it when people use "Autistic" as an insult for someone who is stupid, or dare I say "retarded". Many autistic people are actually quite brilliant, though most of the time we're trapped in our own minds and have trouble expressing ourselves to people. We may be "weird" or "different", but we are as human as everyone else.

There was a kid in my class who had autism and he was a really nice guy. He was actually very social and kind. The problem was, people would easily become his friend and then use him or bully him. For instance, he really liked Minecraft, so in his spare time he made a Minecraft Panorama. It was quite impressive. Then his 'friend' (she was one of those "I have OCD, depression, got abused by my dad and everyone hates me" people) took it and started tearing it apart when he was sick. When he came back and saw his panorama, he was on the bridge of crying. The worst part is, the girl used her 'depression' to get away with her actions. After that, any piece of art made by the autistic kid he wouldn't let anyone close (even his actually good friends) as he didn't trust them and thought they would destroy it. "Misty" (nickname of 'OCD Deppression' girl) if your reading this, you should know that you are a truly bad person.

I am now 16 and in 10th garde and now I realize why I don't have many friends and why I have problems will certain things others don't. But I also think about how far I've came and how hard I've worked. I might have never gotten into a normal school, in fact I almost missed kindergarten. I might have never been able to get a lincense, and go to college in a few years. I feel upest dispressed a lot but then I think about how much progress I've made. In fact, I even considering choosing being a special Ed teacher to try and help autistic kids just like me. It's been a blessing and I'm so thankful for the tutors and teachers that have helped and guided me the last 14 years and my parents for working so hard with me on all of my problems.

Is autism speaks wrong in gathering money for autism research what about the money for autism speaks goes to sugries to fix autism in people who are suffering from autism they get rid of the autism part in our brains then we are all better what's bad in that?
@blossomdollie6 жыл бұрын
Autism speaks only has 4% of donations actually going towards autistic people, they don't have a single autistic person on their board (the only one left because his advice was ignored), the research they fund has KILLED people (they advocate for the anti-vaccine movement and have endorsed bleach enemas and chelation, chelation having caused at least 3 known deaths), and they give voices not to autistic people but to the parents who express their desires to kill their autistic children. They treat autism as a disease, even an epidemic, that needs a cure. It is /not/. Autistic people have different brain functions than others, so what? We don't need a cure, we need accommodations and acceptance, and to be treated like human beings by the rest of the world. If you'd like to read an article about it, here you go. autisticmama.com/do-not-support-autism-speaks/ If you're looking for places that actually help autistic people, try these links. autisticadvocacy.org/ awnnetwork.org/

I have autism and lots of people do misunderstand it. I am extremely high functioning and to others I act "normal." I find the "normal" comment a little bit insulting, because I'm different than the average kid. I do have higher than average intelligence. I'm in three AP classes for goodness sake! But what no one knows or understands is the turmoil that goes on in my head. I have a sensitivity to extremely bright lights and very loud noises, I'm extremely childish and immature, I'm very socially awkward and can only communicate well through writing, and I have meltdowns when put under high amounts of stress. I get frustrated when I can't do something that a "normal" person can do because everyone says that I should be able to do it, but I can't because I process things differently and more slowly than my peers. I have to live with the constant reminder that I'm different and I'm slower than everyone else around me. It sounds depressing, because it kind of is. However, I've learned different ways to control my meltdowns, I've gotten used to brighter lights, and I've gotten better at communicating verbally. I also have friends that love me and treat me almost the same as everyone else. My teachers and parents remind me that I'm smarter than I think I am. My friends love me because I naturally love people and want to be their friend, which is a trait that not a lot of people have these days. Autism is just a barrier that we have to constantly break. It's not debilitating. In some ways, we're just like everyone else, but just a little bit different. We can achieve many things that others can. We have amazing talents and abilities. We can function and succeed, but we just have to work a little bit harder than most people. If there was some sort of cure for autism, I would refuse it, because I actually love having it. It's a part of who I am, and it's scary to think what kind of a human being I'd be if I didn't have this wonderful gift

People just assume that being on the Autism Spectrum makes you a stupid non-verbal bag of meat and fluids. But really, those people just need to get their facts right and learn a little. Also, nothing to do with anything at all, except to relate to everyone else talking about people with autism or relatives with autism: I am obsessed with space, physics, quantum mechanics, black holes, coding, anything to do with astrology, robotics or physics really, and I think I might be part of the above average group for intelligence, because I'm only about 12. There was a boy in my school who I'm sure has autism. He can't pick up sarcasm at all and would believe everything you tell him--once I was joking with someone that I never graduated from school and, as a lost cause, just live there as a supervisor at 40 years old, to which the boy, who was listening in on, replied, "Wait, you're 40? I thought you were 17!" He also would come up to me and ask me all about the Japanese language (I've told people I study it). He'd ask about grammar, how a Japanese person would tell a joke, if the Japanese use phrases like ours ("Would they say it's raining cats and dogs?"). He'd talk for hours about it. I enjoyed his company. I'm not sure why people treat those with autism like they're mentally retarded. He's definitely smart, I just had to be careful not to be sarcastic around him.

He sounds really cool. I have trouble picking up on sarcasm, even though I can understand it when I use it. It's just when other people don't over-exaggerate their tone, it can get confusing, especially when what they are saying sounds like it's plausible. Just like he was with Japanese, that's how I am with movies, I can talk about them for hours, even if the person I'm talking to is bored. People would tell me to shut up all the time, and for a while I couldn't understand what I was doing wrong. It's a lot easier if you just politely ask someone to stop or ask to change the subject. Just let us know what we're doing wrong. I've only really told one person I know that I'm autistic (besides immediate family of course) and they immediately started treating me like I couldn't do anything by myself or needed constant supervision. It was really annoying and weird.

Basically, long story short, it went and made this ear-piercing loud noise. My earplugs were in another room and I knew it wouldn't last long, so I went and stood behind a nearby pillar to try and break the noise (which barely helped). I was also wearing working gloves, so I didn't really feel like plugging my ears with my fingers. But yeah, while the normal sound volume of these machines is pretty loud, it's nothing compared to what it was at that moment.

I myself, a 14 year old female, have autism and I was diagnosed when I was 5 years old. Since a young age I had a very high reading level. In the 1st grade I would read an atlas during reading time while my classmates read pictures books. My 6th grade English teacher always got mad at me because I won't check out books from the library in my lexical range but the school library didn't have books in my lexical range. I am currently a freshman in high school and most of my teachers where shocked that I didn't take honors classes because they said I should take them. (I didn't take them because I'd be really stressed.) I can say that in my cause parent age doesn't matter because I have a little brother who doesn't have autism, however my father has autism and his father might but was never diagnosed. My teachers have said that I excel in my classes. I am however sensitive to light, sound etc. and I get made fun for it. I'm starting my freshman year of high school soon and that's my story so far.

Dakota Darci I wish the best for him! I have a best friend (he's like my big brother) who has autism. I never even knew until one day him and I were talking and it casually came up in a conversation. I never judged or questioned. I just accepted it for what it is, because he's such a sweet person and wants the best for me. He loves me like I'm his little sister and just that alone shows that even if someone has autism they can be just as loving, if not more loving that average people. Everyone deserves respect, even if they may not be what everyone else considers normal.

Autism and vending machines don't mix. When I was a kid staying at a daycare center, there was a severely autistic kid there who put his money in the local vending machine and picked a Coke, but the machine spit out a Big Red instead. The kid then went crazy like it was the end of the world or some shit and the staff had to take him away. Needless to say, I got a free soda that day ;)

well not rly sure if the autistic label been used for some socical stuff like that is a problem rly. Pretty sure they know what is. I for one use it alot and i know what it is in alot of depth and if you think about it autistic people tend to get rather easy offend so when some one gets offend easy they get called autistic. the reason its used is to do all the awareness rly. Since if it was not so well known it would not be used in this offen or be this commen on the net. Offence is not given its taken its ones own problem if you get offend.

I was helping out at a summer camp one time, and one week a kid joined who had an aid with him. I had been around special ed classes, and seen at my school that often kids with autism were followed by aids. I didn't think much of it at first, because he seemed pretty average (maybe slightly better of than average) from what I had seen. Then, one day I was sitting in the clubhouse playing a game with one of the kids, and he started writing out THE ENTIRE PERIODIC TABLE OF ELEMENTS, with atomic numbers and other details. So, I started talking to him, and it turned out he knew TONS about it, and you could basically ask him anything about it, or it's history, and he would know it. For those of you that say "Well that's not impressive, I have the Periodic table of elements memorized." This kid was about 8.

As someone with Asperger's, I highly relate to the obsessive details and difficulty understanding social cues. Hell, it still fascinates me that there's a huge variance of obsessions and affinities in Asperger's, and I've always wanted to know what triggers the draw to a certain topic or subject for an Aspie, especially ones that stick for life or for months.

TwistleofMobius As someone with Aspergers I too wonder about that. I believe our personalities have a role to play in it
@TwistleofMobius7 жыл бұрын
That too. I've looking at articles about this and past experiences and fears might contribute as well. For example, a child with Asperger's who is terrified of storms might develop their obsession as one for tornadoes and other meteorological phenomena, possibly using understanding of their fear as a means of coping with it. And, as you said, it's likely our personalities and certain traits as well. I enjoy complex and fantastical stories as well as having a sense of spontaneity and raucousness, which might be why one of my main obsessions/affinities/special interests (whatever you want to call it!) is heavy metal.
@alliewilli2007 жыл бұрын
TwistleofMobius my obsessions tend to focus around film and video editing. One obsession I've had for as long as I can remember is my love of facts and I believe this stems from my inability to start conversations so I can alway relate to the situation by a 'did you know' and it from there becomes easier

Question: There was this boy in my class in third grade, EVERYONE thought he was autistic but I couldn't tell. One thing for sure, is he had huge anger issues! He threw at chair, which almost hit me. He had trouble communicating, but I couldn't help feeling bad for the kid. Did he have ASD? Another kid: This kid was super nice. He was in a special needs class. So I suspect he had ASD because he would often fail his arms. He never looked me in the eye when I was helping him out. He also had trouble saying " Hi" to people and his help instructor would tell him to do so when he passed people in the hall.

I have higher functioning autism and I don't find it a disability at all. In school, teachers would try and pull me aside to tutor me which really annoyed me because I was just as good as every other student. I got hearing tests (Because school was so easy in primary school i found it boring) and even had doctors come in. Eventually, I got ahead of my class simply because I was tutored and was always doing the next weeks work. I guess that was the only really bad thing about my childhood, but I was definitely different from other kids. I used to hate kids shows, watch documentaries constantly, read science books and had an obsession with money. I was also extremely shy and got bored very easily. Eventually, I grew out of all that (Which a lot of autistic people do) and nowadays nobody would expect I'm autistic, of course, writing a huge comment on a youtube video is a giveaway but, besides that, people just think I'm some sort of nerd.

VerryLongName now that you said "autistic" it actually brings up the fact that there were tests that found "autistic" was actually disrespectful to someone with autism but they found that saying "a person with autism" wasn't offensive so they just want to be treated like humans so thanks VeryLongName for saying "Autistic" so I could remember this and for everyone else reading this: remember this comment and the tests when you talk to someone with autism

I still find this as a weird disorder because I apparently have it yet i seem to live normally and everyone around me believes that I just goof around too much and am socially awkward. I do find it funny though and am a troll at times and bait people who don't know I have this disorder who try and speak for "us" and act like we are perpetual victims, I was not diagnosed till I was an adult and think that growing up without getting treated turned out for the better. I learned how to control myself and never felt that I was a victim of circumstance. That is why I fear that if I have children that also happen to contract this that they will never get somewhere. I don't speak out against them getting diagnosed, I just am worrisome since I never went through this myself.

The True Legand I dread the special education system they made my symptoms worse I been trying to ask my parents to completely take me out of the program because I can't be a middle schooler when 60 year old lady follows me everywhere and makes a big deal when I go somewhere without telling her.

The True Legand I can relate to this comment. I was diagnosed with AS at 15; I'm 18 now, and the only symptoms that really affect my social interactions is my slight stutter and occasional clumsiness

i was diagnosed in 5th grade and never knew i had it until my mom told me in 11th, i always just thought i was awkward and clumsy. I scored above average on the ACT so i think it only affects me socially.

The True Legand I have the same problem. Got diagnosed with it when I was 17. But I am not really that different. I follow a normal life... Most people are stunned when I tell them I have autism. I think those therapies are causing the kids with autism to develop bad habbits. I think people with autism dont really need therapies. I myself want to learn from every single moment. Wich in term gave me the spirit to mive on and live a normal life. I think people with autism (the lighter form ofcourse) need to learn to find a place in society. And tgey have to learn that by themselfs. You should not keep you kid inside a circle of "good" habits that psychiatrists call good for people with autism. You should go out and let you kids talk to strangers have contact with world around them. Let them learn to get a place in society like we did.

Thank you very much for making this video. I'm in the spectrum myself, with my MCDD. Apparently that's even more complicated than autism itself. But thank you very much for raising awareness! People who know I'm autistic tend to treat me as if I'm retarded, even though I'm not. (And now, this comment shall fade away amongst the many others. )

Thank you for making this video. My brother has autism and he was diagnosed at an early age. Thank you for sharing this information to others because people can learn that people with autism have trouble sometimes, but it doesn't mean they're stupid. My brother gets bullied so much and now that you've shared this people could at least act differently to people with autism.

my brother has autism! he was born with it. When someone wants a fist bump, he doesn't autimatically do it. He also HATES loud noises. He is pretty talkative though. He would keep a conversation going for 2 or 3 hours.

I have autism I'm not exactly proud of it nor do I want anyone I know aware that I have it because how it is shown in today's world. In all honesty I'm ashamed of my condition because I feel like if I didn't have it things in my life could have gone better. I always felt treated differently in my family so I hardly ever left my house all I wanted to do was impress my only parent around which was my mom which is hard to do even today. I have a social life but only around people who hardly notice my autism and I pass it off as something else so I can feel normal.
@BJGvideos6 жыл бұрын
Why would you be ashamed of something you can't help? That's like being ashamed of a hair color.
@BJGvideos6 жыл бұрын
dynamiteknight See, to me it's the fault of other people for not getting ME. I don't think that I come off as that different than them, and I bring a lot of good things to a situation. Maybe that's ego or something, but if someone doesn't want me around because of something I can't help, that's their issue.
@BJGvideos6 жыл бұрын
dynamiteknight It still seems silly to hate yourself for something you can't help. That's literally self defeating.
@AzureSkull766 жыл бұрын
BJGvideos It may be self defeating but not everyone just simply accepts it and welcomes it. Especially how society reflects on autism. How we're more in need of help then anyone else but we don't ask for it and don't want it they do it to make themselves feel good for trying to "help" us. We get shamed for something we can't control so nowadays any social disorder is in the same category as mentally retarded. I go out and socialize however if I don't want to deal with people then I'll lock myself away. At the end it's my choice. It may be self defeating like I said but not everyone is happy with this and it's because it'll last til death that makes it worse for some of us.
@BJGvideos6 жыл бұрын
Lazy Skull I guess I'm still confused, since I don't get how anybody else can make you feel ashamed. That would imply that they can control your emotions and that isn't possible.
