I actually think that there are two ways to respond to them based on the circumstances. Mockery can be considered to be a type of false accusation. And there are two types of false accusations: 1. False accusations where the accusers either know that what they are saying is false, or don't care whether what they are saying is true but are instead just interested in damaging a person's or a people's reputation. With these kinds of false accusations, the person doing it is usually fishing for a reaction. In other words, they don't have something tangible to accuse you or others of, and are hoping that you yourself or someone like you will give them something to work with in your emotionally agitated state. When you see or sense that this may be the case, don't respond. You're not going to win them over by revealing to them a truth that they don't care about either way. 2. False accusations made in ignorance. With these ones, you will sometimes detect "genuine error" in someone's reasoning within someone's mockery/false accusation, because they are either uninformed or ill-informed. For example, though Jesus did not respond during His trial or on the cross when He was mocked, He did respond to the Sadducees when they mocked the idea of the resurrection. Jesus, knowing that their mockery was in ignorance, opted to educate them by pointing out flaws in their reasoning and assumptions, and by giving them information that they didn't have before. With this type of mockery or false accusation, you can and probably should respond, but only if you have enough clarity on the matter to do so, and only if you're in a stable emotional state. Because even if you have clarity, a response made in bad taste can cause the other person to focus on the manner of your response as the main issue rather than the content of your response.

Dr. Plummer seems to have the very character he urges us to have. That comes from long devotion to the Lord I think. Thank you.

Helpful comments. And I think the suggestion of reaching out to people who have been mocked with some words of support is a good one.

Amen! I've been working on this. Super hard in traffic! Not to make light of this topic... ok a little.
