One of the things that wasn't touched upon with low guard was how it enables better takedown defense at the cost of being more vulnerable to strikes, another reason it is seen more in MMA than in other styles tat bar grappling

The first few minutes about gyms and coaches trying to make everybody fight the same is so true. I hate that shit. It doesn't take a whole session to find out

A long time ago when I used to do a lot of taekwondo (ITF style), there was only one "correct" way of doing anything; the way that General Choi originally said. Questioning was not allowed. Variation was not allowed. I'm not sure if this cult-like attitude is still in some traditional martial art gyms but it is something to stay away from.

When Kickboxing, I basically stand with Muay Thai footing and a really simple Dutch Guard for the most part because my main ways of scoring are jabs and straights, teeps, and leg kicks and simply because it’s what comes naturally to me
@grahamhill676

I think another important factor is vision and head movement. Tighter guards make it harder for you to move defensively and also make it harder for you to see. In boxing I prefer to have my hands a little out so i can see punches without clearly and also move my head. For me its better to avoid or intercept a punch entirety, with high guard being a last resort. Some people really do punch hard enough to rock you through the guard, not most people, but some.

I use long high guard the most soviet style with only the lead hand extended and the rear hand holding the phone. I mix That with philly shell. I use lift and drop parries as i move between the 2. If someone forces into close range i go to a reverse cross guard and use only my elbows until i can get space to go back to long range counter striking. I don't mind stopping kicks with one arm as long as i move my head away at the same time. All from a bladed stance with switch stepping to turn bad positions into good positions .

You should honestly have two guards you focus on, in my opinion. One for strikers/boxers, one for those that like to chute or rip lots of kicks. And the answers/suggestions are, again to your point, completely dependent on the martial art + what defense suits your natural body movements.
@madthevillain

Worth noting about the growing popularity of 4oz gloves in MMA and One Championship Muay Thai: guys are getting KO’d through and around high/tight guards due to the little defensive real estate the small gloves provide. I’m noticing the defensive style in those places shifting towards longer open guards + head/feet movement. This also allows for more play with hand traps “sticky hands” and elbows. Most of us Joes who are training/sparring 16oz gloves still should practice and mostly rely on tight guards. Open “sticky” guard as well as Philly shell guards are still fun to play with tho ;)

another important point to note is that traditional muay thai doesn't make use of the dutch guard because it is a lazy static high guard, and muay thai figthers have always preferred an active muay thai high guard.

I use the Dutch guard when I have boxing gloves and the 2nd hands out guard that can parry in MMA gloves. At mid range I sort of use the 5th guard though only with my lead hand. My jabs can hit from unconventional angles and from below the usual field of vision and at mid range I can use head movement for punches and see kicks coming to back out. In the pocket though, I use the Dutch guard almost exclusively, and a modified version with mma gloves

Great video! I use the dutch guard aswell, and i think alot of people that have issues with the dutch guard things you said some have, is due to a weak link somewhere? I found that even if one element is off, such as bad foot contact/not tighting core, not leaning into the guard slightly, not making proper arm contact with the body, it makes the guard frail and easily rocked around. This is just my opinion! But i do think the dutch guard has alot of small details that needs to be executed to make a strong guard, and if one of the links are weak you might get a frail guard.

One disadvantage that i see also of using those tight guards, is that when get hit, you get hit the gloves and occupy your vision, this can make your opponent to get better angles (a thing that Lomachecnko is very good on doing vs tight guards). Also because you are getting hit on the gloves, sometimes at both gloves, both are occuppied on receiving the shot so you are not able to counter punch so effetely at the same time or in that small frame of a second. Another disadvantage is that sometimes judges count those punches on guard, has points, because is hard to see if lands or not. I like to mix with a long guard, low hands (if confident and to rest) and tight guard where I'm cornered too pressured. Nice video btw, you could also add Philly shell

As someone that's 6'4 I always did pretty good in sparring but always felt something was missing. It's like when you try to do certain moves shorter opponents do you just get hit. Nobody teaches the tall guys how to fight. After studying Vladimir klitchko and Larry Holmes my defense and counters have improved like 100%. I'm switching between a long guard and Philly shell and it's working pretty good. I'm not worried about the left hook for example because I can just do a little step back. My main defense isn't my guard. It's the space between us. The long guard and Philly style allows me to fire off jabs and probes to keep that distance. Then I can fall back to catching the arms on the inside, stepping back and slightly leaning, or tying up. While it might be boxing centric, I found it's worked very well in sparring against class mates who do muay thai. I only have to worry about leg kicks, but they struggle to land hands since I can out maneuver them while they have that traditional Thai stance. Dont sleep on the mid guard or long guard. Especially as a taller fighter that can get away with it. If you are 6'4 you shouldn't be trying to peekaboo and slip to the inside. Why do you want to be on the inside. Jab jab and jab some more.

As a very lanky guy with long arms, I prefer long guard. But as soon as I enter into boxing range, I Switch to high guard

6:20 What if your hands are higher up but they’re still moving around a bit? Kinda like Rafael Fiziev. Im pretty short and usually my sparring partners are taller than me. Been training MMA for 3 years. I tried utilizing a more dutch/standard boxing guard first (my background is boxing), but longer guards feel a bit easier for me. Example: Volk and Saenchai

Is the Philly shell something you could try in kickboxing? I've seen some karate stances with the hands on a similar pose of the Philly shell, it's pretty solid in boxing, so just wondering if it's viable when kicking is added to the mix

not the philly shell, but traditional muay thai has a guard where one hand is low and the other is high. i can show you some examples ----> kzbin.info/www/bejne/mpO6noaweremqMk

My instructor told me to use a long guard "he also used". Because of my lack of depth perception, it would increase my perception.

but these are not all the guards gabriel, there is a mixed one where left hand is more extended and right hand is closer to body. i think some called it the "fencing guard" there is another where your left arm is low and protecting the stomach (mayweather philly shell)

The best stance if you don't have as much training as your opponent is the one where you grab your ankles and walk backwards at them.

Thanks for the info 👍 How do you think the Dutch guard would fair without gloves? Like in a self defence situation.

It would probably only work with good forward pressure because it leaves you susceptible to high kicks.

Dutch guard is useless against elbows, aspecially from the middle and picking elbows from the sides. It's also puts you in very vulnerable position if someone clinches you. It might take a lot of time to be comfortable with the long guard, and yes you might take some punches to the forehead, but at least you wont get destroyed by elbows and clinch.
@DKYtut
@DKYtut Жыл бұрын
That's a way too simple explanation, which in some way has been debunked since people in ONE fight muay thai with small gloves and a lot of muay thai fighters get knocked out because they are not used to brawling/punch flurrys. With regular gloves Dutch guard will be a safe option for most people, especially in kickboxing rules, while ofcourse open hands guard fits muay thai rules since the pacing is way slower and majority of the time the trades are shorter with often a longer distance preference for kicks scoring.

@@DKYtut I would say the key is to know when to ditch the long guard to the duch guard, bu if your default/ initial guard is dutch you won't last long in muay thai fight.

My reach is fing long to really do anything with Dutch guard besides guarding. Yes, sometimes I'll use it to just guard attacks effectively, but that shit is for fkin manlets honestly

Started at a mma gym where the instructor was big on Dutch style so naturally I do a Dutch guard with my shoulders a little forward. Now at a Muay Thai gym and the instructor keeps claiming I’m too tense and need to relax like a Muay Thai guy. Do I just take what I can? Or readjust everything because I already feel relaxed and comfortable
