On December 4, 1988, Busey was severely injured in a motorcycle accident in which he was not wearing a helmet. His skull was fractured, and doctors feared he suffered permanent brain damage. During the filming of the second season of Celebrity Rehab in 2008, Busey was referred to psychiatrist Dr. Charles Sophy. Sophy suspected that Busey's brain injury has had a greater effect on him than realized. He described it as essentially weakening his mental "filters" and causing him to speak and act impulsively.

Its actually more literal than this, the legend of the werewolf comes from the real tale of the hunting of the Beast of Gevaudan, a man eating beast (probably a feral, rabid or parasites infected wolf-dog bastard of great size) that supposedly killed nearly a hundred villagers in the farmlands of France and was brought down by a hunter by the name of Jean Chastel. This is also where the myth of werewolf being weak to silver comes form, as he used silver bullets to down the beast, but for a peculiarly funny yet humane reason: there was a shortage of worthwhile metals for the bullets, so he had melted them himself using the silver from cutlery.

The curse coming from picking an arbitrary flower in the woods has deep roots in medieval folklore. It also underlines the seemingly random nature of who a serial killer is. On the topic of old world gun smiths crafting magic bullets; the practice was extremely common among German immigrants and their descendants who lived in rural areas well into the 20th century. When I saw this movie for the first time I remember clearly that the scariest part of the film was when Marty's sister went door to door and you just didn't know who would have an eye injury. It could be anybody. What a great underappreciated film. Thanks for giving it some attention.

I think Dog Soldiers was fantastic but it was also made much later and I think that helps with the effects. I always thought that Silver Bullet had a very low budget compared to other movies I remember at the time, I love it still the same.

I think generally the softness of lead is an asset to causing trauma in soft targets, but silver would probably still fair fine as a projectile. You are losing out on mass though so maybe it would be better suited to cartridges inclined to have a heavy bullet weight, like .45-70.

You should really do a video on the whole werewolf genre like you did with clown films. The werewolf genre is very interesting and there are a plethora of reasons why making a good werewolf film is a true balancing act!

Growing up, Silver Bullet was one of those films I would tune into if it came on Cable TV because in many ways, I thought it was an astounding piece of horror and werewolf media. When you get down to it, the story of this handicapped child and werewolf parallels David and Goliath, where the sense of hopelessness is strong, but you have some hope to overcome it. I'm not even sure Stephen purposely saw that when he made the novel, but he probably did in Silver Bullet. I wonder if films like Silver Bullet influenced The Duffer Brothers' work on Stranger Things as this idea of a town plagued by something supernatural is eerily similar in this work. Something about it's gimmick too, a creature who only regularly appears ONCE A MONTH is truly remarkable since most werewolf films don't imply that and treat them like vampires where every night they change. There's layers and layers of unique artistic interpretation and meaning into this. I ADORE the art by Bernie Wrightson's artwork for the book. I knew about his work for Ghostbusters, which I highly recommend people to check out as it always gave me chills, and to see it in this book is so damn amazing. I LOVE the scenery portions too as they set the mood for each chapter/month. I need to get a copy of the book. Thank you for the review. This is such a long comment, but to see people appreciate this film and reveal more into it, truly makes me happy to understand why I gravitated towards it as a kid.

The silver bullet making scene is one of the best scenes in cinema history. In my opinion, that is. The music, the editing, the pace. Beautifully done. The blacksmith or wizard was very aware of what uncle red was asking. A very beautiful scene. It was scarier than most horror scenes without showing any gore or terror. That's why it was so scary in a sense. One of my favorite scenes of all time.

Excellent analysis! I love Silver Bullet. One of my favorite movies as a kid. Read the book as a teen and loved the sequence of the phases of the moon being used. A real gem of the King's one that not many people are familiar with plus I love Wrightson's work. Perhaps a essay on his art as a future project?

This is one of my favorite horror films of the 80's. I grew up watching this film. It made me look at people in a different light. I was able to see the senselessness of a mob, the darkness within a religious man, and the judgement given by people you have always known. This town could be anywhere in America, and that is what makes it scary. It will always be in my top 10 best horror films.

I grew up in a small town and when my parents showed this movie to me and my brothers (I'm glad they did while we were so young) it scared the shit out of us. I think one of the main reasons was because being in a small town that is so close to the mountains it just made the story all the more believable.

I never read the novel this movie was based on but your description has made me incredibly interested in checking it out and a calendar/book that covers a year's worth of full moon stories each month is a brilliant idea for the genre of Werewolf horror. I adore the movie but the book sounds like it might even be a step above the film so I'm going to have to check it out. And Bernie Wrightson is an incredible artist. Swamp Thing is one of the most exciting comics characters there is and Wrightson made his books feel so alive and fascinating, I had no idea about him doing the art for the book before this video! There's no way I can pass on the book after hearing he illustrated it. I loved the movie and the kid actors in particular were perfect and Gary Busey felt so made for the uncle character that I don't think anyone could have fit the way he did.

Oh the book is seriously great, but it is very different from the movie. They both follow the same story, but the book is a more distant approach in a way. It’s one of the harder Stephen King books to find, but you can usually find good deals for it online, I’ve only seen it a few times in used book stores though. Wrightson was seriously the best though, the way he would use dark black patches in his ink was amazing. His swamp thing stuff in particular is great, but I really loved everything he did. He was one of the reasons I made this video, just to give me an excuse to talk about him for a while haha

Brilliant insight into one of my favorite movies. It is a film that I go back to again and again. Every time we watch it, another theme seems to emerge. If you adored your wheelchair bound nephew, and an unknown serial killer began operating in his hometown, you would assume he would be an easy target. This is by far my favorite "werewolf" film. It has moments that are campy or even slightly cheesey but it also has a couple scenes which for me personally, are among the most terrifying I've seen to date. One of these is the scene in the church, when the Priest is having a nightmare/fever dream and the entire congregation begins to turn into lycanthropes right before his eyes. It is the stuff of absolute hellish terror.

I’ve always loved Cycle of the Werewolf and Silver Bullet and I guess the way modern media has primed me it made me feel like I wanted to know more about Lester Lowe’s backstory and how he became a werewolf, but I know that that’s not the importance of the story. I still wish that Cycle of the Werewolf was a full-length novel though, or that at least Stephen King would make a full-length werewolf novel like he did with Salem’s Lot.

I’m with you on that, I would really dig him to go back into that subject again because as much as I do love Cycle it is very limited because it started in a very limited style. I love the movie too but I would be very down for him to dive into them in a normal everyday setting again to see what he would have to say about them now. I do love how he handles Lowe’s backstory in the book, it’s almost Lovecraftian in that he just picks some flowers that immediately rot in his hands and turns him into a wolf. I love that idea, and it’s one of the only examples that I know of where there isn’t a werewolf already in existence that makes our wolf. In Praise of Shadows No problem! I know how important it is for new content creators to hear feedback and a lot of your pieces genuinely interest me. Now that you mention that Lovecraftian way that he apparently became a werewolf (I must have forgotten how if it was mentioned in the book because I just assumed it wasn’t mentioned) it really reminds me of how in Dracula (original novel) Van Helsing is talking and he suggests that Dracula became a vampire by learning dark magic in this place called the Scholomance in the Carpathian Mountains, and knowing that it only adds more power to the character as a villain because he wasn’t “sired” by being bitten and given a disease like a victim, he just “became” how we was by being so inherently evil.

@@theshape7817 Yeah its totally like that! I really love how that was shown in the Coppola '92 movie. And it is a super small detail in the book, I only remember it because I reread it this week before making the video lol In the chapter (I think either October or November) where it is revealed that Lowe is the Werewolf he is narrating in his mind and he talks about the weird flowers he found in the church cemetary and how they rotted as soon as they were plucked. It's only like one sentence, but I like how it is both an explanation and not one at the same time.

Seeing Silver Bullet a few years after it's released on VHS, I was maybe 9 or 10, was an adrenaline ride. Not to mention Megan Follows, of Anne of Green Gables fame, was a crush of mine (along with Alyssa Milano.) I was living in Prince Edward Island at the time. There was a lot I desired in this movie... fireworks, a cool bike, a father figure who cared and was funny and wild, and to be a detective solving mysteries.

I'm glad you appreciate Stephen King the way I do. I happened to start reading his books about the same time as I moved from the city to a small town, and I was always the outsider, watching life and drama taking place, examining people's drama and motives.

I was going to comment about how oddly fast that wheelchair was, re-watched and noticed I missed the whole motorcycle wheel chair thing the first time around. 😂
