We still have a long, long way to go before we can consider Singapore a cycling utopia. It may sound impressive on paper, but cyclists still face issues getting around . Conflicts with motorised vehicles and pedestrians are still common. Narrow shared paths between park nodes are not exactly ideal. Can go on and on of how cycling around is challenging.

what we want is the straight and direct route to the city like motorways but safe for us , but they decided its not feasible . i cycled from bukit batok to town and its long ....VERY LONG ... but its very scenic very enjoyable even at 2pm

Singapore cycling is fairly bad. The PCN are all fragmented. Sidewalks are too narrow. Roads dangerous.

I hope a percentage of the billion-dollar budget will be spent on educating the public, both motorists and pedestrians on sharing the roads/footpaths. Understandably, fixing people is the hardest part.

I'm not sure putting cycling paths right next to pedestrian walkways is a good idea. There is no separation at all. Pedestrians often walk on the cycling paths which makes cycling at speed a hassle. And some cycling paths are so narrow and come with sudden turns which call for accidents. I am not sure that the design of these cycling paths are done by cyclists. Being a cyclist in Singapore, I can only say that cycling on these newly built cycling paths are something next to a nightmare. I hope the people designing these cycling paths do not only focus on the length, but really look into their practicality. For example, think about how people cycle, why they cycle, what are the different types of cyclists, and also think about when more and more people cycle how that will look like.

"I'm not sure putting cycling paths right next to pedestrian walkways is a good idea. " It is not. With the speed of a bicycle easily being 3 to 4 times that of a pedestrian, they do not belong together on shared spaces. This was the experience of several EU countries.

the only way we can have a real cycling path for only cyclist is if the garment is wiling to take out a driving lane and I doubt that. the drivers pay too much for cars. politicians drive and are driven in cars. they don't want traffic even though sg "traffic" is so mild compared to other countries. it's basically an effect of Singapore is a playground for rich as they say lol

Have been going round PCN after retirement in 2015 with a group of vegan friends. Found that North West and west side of Singapore really need to beef up the cycling paths comparable to the ECP, PasirRis Park, Punggol Waterway, making it more fun to ride.

Currently it is still very bad. To change that: bicycle lanes should be a straight as possible, so you can go fast and see far ahead, with strictly no pedestrians allowed. Physical barrier with pedestrian lanes and car lanes.. Two directions also segregated with at least a line. Most road crossings with bridges and tunnels, so that there is no delay with traffic lights and these should be designed to be taken without slowing down. It should be possible to go from any place to any another place on bicycle with average over 15km/hr. Then Singapore will be leading. Else it would still be a poor attempt compared to for example The Netherlands.
@danielc2701
@danielc2701 Жыл бұрын
They got no space for the roads needed to segregate, the country is way too small for that, so they cram as much as they can into a small area. Not something they have control over, physical limitations are still limitations.
@zzzowie
@zzzowie Жыл бұрын
@@danielc2701 In many locations it is not a lack of space, but just bad design, major improvements can be made. Start with keeping pedestrians away from bicycle lanes and straightening all bicycle lanes. Create a lot of bicycle tunnels, suitable for high speed cycling. And if car lanes need to be sacrificed, then do that. Cars shouldn't be prioritised over bicycles. Make driving less attractive, and ban combustion engines. Instead of explaining why things can't be done, show some ambition. Singapore is not as bad as Indonesia for cycling, but on a 1 to 10 scale it is still not better than a 3.
@danielc2701
@danielc2701 Жыл бұрын
@@zzzowie You lost me when you said bicycle tunnels. You know, if you made those in the tropics, they're going to turn into human cooking ovens? They work in Europe because the climate there is cool, a confined heat trap near the equator is NOT safe.
@zzzowie
@zzzowie Жыл бұрын
@@danielc2701 This is not true in my experience in Singapore. Tunnels offer shadow. For longer tunnels ventilators will help, but most tunnels won't be longer than the width of a road. And why "you lost me..." ? Better not focus on a single thing, but be a true leader, contribute with a satellite view and vision leading to major improvements.
@danielc2701
@danielc2701 Жыл бұрын
@@zzzowie lol so anyone who blindly follows you is a "true leader" and anyone who does not isn't? Sounds like a self declared title. Shadow is one thing but stone traps heat and plastics trap UV. Ventilators are way too expensive for your white elephant cycling paths vs open air trails that cost... nothing. You ever seen those huge ass ventilators for the CTE? It's affordable for an expressway, not for a 2 lane cycling path.

Singapore is NOT a cycling utopia. In fact, one of the worst cities. They have a PCN network which is not a cycling network but an enlarged pedestrian path to share. Also, the pedestrian paths are too narrow to share. The roads are not cycling friendly and drivers LOATHE cyclists as pests so it's dangerous. one of the reason is cars are over 150K usd to buy just a basic car so they do NOT want to share the road with slow cyclists not following rules that are not paying anything. I have a cycling video on my channel that can showcase how it's hard at times to cycle in Singapore. Korea and China off the top of my head have a substantially HIGHER experience for cyclists with same dedicated cycling paths. Also, drivers are not "mad" at cyclists.

lol when was this made? Bike sharing died a miserable death a few years ago. It might have been a good idea but people will still be people, the bikes ended up dumped in vacant lots, into drains and canals and generally trashed. Combined with the Covid whammy, bike sharing in Singapore is mostly dead. Bike storage facilities? More like bike DUMPING facilities, people will park their unwanted bikes there and just abandon it. Someone is really out of touch with the present situation on the ground.

This feels like a propaganda, which only concentrates on what is available but not the actual effects the projects brings. The increase in "cycling paths" are welcome, however much thought are required to be put into the plans. Many of the current paths are simply afterthoughts and are rather inconvenient to commuters (I commute by bike, so should not call myself a "cyclist", no skintight clothes and flashy bikes). Some of the paths abruptly ends or requires commuters to get off their bike to push frequently. If running is faster and safer, how would it encourage more people to commute by bike?
@pervertt

I'm surprised these cycling initiatives were not undertaken earlier. Singapore should be a paradise for cyclists. It is flat, it is compact, and car ownership is uber expensive. Cycling should be the default means of getting around, not the consolation prize for those who cannot afford a car. Do not follow the lead of other English speaking countries that relegate cyclists to second class citizens on the road. Encourage helmet use, but do not mandate it. Compulsory helmet use is a huge discouraging factor for many would be cyclists.

It will never happen as politicians are driven. A lot of other cities converted roads for pedestrians and cyclists but Singapore only slowly adding fragmented PCN networks that are mediocre at best. Essentially band aid solutions. Imagine if they actually took a lane out for cyclists and for even PMD to return(with licensing)

The speed regulating strips are a pest, honestly. They rattle those lower cost bicycles without suspension through and through, it's bone-shaking. Riders who own expensive suspension bikes don't care. It's similar to those humps on roads, SUV drivers won't need to care much.

First step to a pedestrian/cycling town would be to get rid of the car-centric mindset. An easy low hanging fruit: get proper traffic lights experts and get traffic lights cycles right! One would think its easy, but seems there is some kind of mind block hard to overcome. And my believe in this as an actual future utopia will be shooting up on the day I see the first sign saying: "Motorists dismount and push!" :))
