I too an expat here and i just bought a brompton for SG cycling and I really love it. Just additional tip, every time i ring my bell approaching pedestrians on the sidewalks, I always say “thank you” when i pass them by just for basic courtesy, and i think they appreciate it ❤️

Basic rule has always been to keep left. Singapore drivers sit on the right, so I do understand the instincts to veer towards the wrong side.

I really hope we have more bicycle lanes in Singapore, like a separate bicycle lane beside the walkways (for the pedestrians), so that it is safe for both cyclists and pedestrians. The park connectors are not everywhere and it might not be very convenient depending on where you want to go to.

Hey Travis, fellow American in Singapore. You might want to try this route: from Jelita take Bukit Sepap to the trail leading to Green Corridor, continue all the way to the trail closure then jump on Rifle Range road all the way to the end... and if you’re feeling adventurous take the dirt trails from there. One of the best routes I’ve found!

This is a pretty spot on commentary on cycling in Singapore. I'm a local and in general it's pretty safe to cycle here, bar the small times where drivers do stuff like stopping at double yellow lines in front of you to drop off passengers or just to wait illegally, and having to dodge to the next lane to ride uninterrupted... Or the pedestrians who walk side by side on a PCN creating a human gate (seriously, 5 people side by side...)... Just being courteous and patient as a cyclist in SG goes a long way. There's too many videos of errant cyclists doing shit that can be avoided if they were more understanding and patient. And I get that vehicle drivers and pedestrians can be idiots too, but if we start pointing fingers I don't think the argument will ever end. Anyway, good to see a fellow cyclist following the rules, whether you're an expat or not. I think there's too much negativity on Singapore's day to day interactions.
@garymoh4828
@garymoh4828 3 жыл бұрын
Usually are the women that create the human gate, especially when there are more than 2 of them , so that they could talk to each other and at time face each other during their conversation, totally unaware of their surrounding. For example the other day I met three of them, two on the left side by side, the third on the right, making a very small gap in the centre just for one bike to safely go through & because they were talking to each other, it is unlikely they were even aware of their surrounding. Therefore I always shake my head and slow down. There are even worst situation like three or more of them walking side by side on the left, on the right there could be other like incoming bike or jogger, therefore I was forced to bring my bell to make sure they were aware of my presence & start to move to the left.

In this video you seem to be keeping right - while no one will call you out for it, cyclists generally keep left unless overtaking (as in motor traffic) on park connectors (the canal-side trails) and cycling paths. It's true sidewalks have no convention though, as pedestrians have legal right of way.

yeah if u want to bike around leisurely/commute for errands its a decent enough place. if u want to do road riding seriously, then there are definitely better countries. that said, I wouldn't consider it a shitty place for road riding, given that the tarmac quality is good, there arent a lot of road debris (i ride about 6 hours each week and I've only punctured my road bike once in the past year), plenty of petrol kiosks and eateries around, and believe it or not, some areas are quiet enough (e.g: LCK, TMCR, rifle range road) to do repeats.

I have a folding bike called a Java Zelo V2. It's affordable ($300sgd) and everything I need for casual trips around the city or to the grocery store. However, if you're a serious biker I wouldn't get a folding bike. A hybrid is probably the way to go if you're looking for a full size bike for daily use. 99% of the places you'll go are paved - so there's no need for a mountain bike unless you intend to seek out dirt trails for fun.

Thanks for sharing. Welcome to Singapore, a beautiful and well planned and organized city and country with lots of PCN(trails) and footpaths(sidewalks). Couldn't agreed more with you that riding on the street (road) is truly dangerous as you could easily get hit (or even killed) by any other vehicles on the road at any time. That's also the reason why I almost never ride on the road except one time when the footpath near my place was closed for construction and I had no choice but to switch to riding on the road for a short distance then quickly switched back to footpath and continue my journey back to my home. The good news is, I was told that they are now still in the process of increasing more PCN/Shared paths which will be awesome and good news to all cyclists, PMD riders and e-bicycle cyclists. Hopefully in the near future we would have more PCN/Shared Paths to use for our cycling journey around Singapore. Well, wish you all the best in your cycling journey and living in Singapore. Keep up the good work, take good care and God bless:)

Just remember one important fact : Mounted Cyclists have no LEGAL right of way on 1. Pedestrian walkway (covered or not) 2. Footpath 3. Pedestrian or zebra crossing. 4. Void deck (HDB). 5. Playground. Cycling is considered vehicular traffic and belong on the road. Having said that, rules were not strictly enforced and motorists usually give way to cyclists on zebra crossings on a friendly basis not on a legal basis. DO NOT approach a zebra crossing at speed, the law is not on your side. If I am not mistaken, only Tampines Town have dedicated cycling and pedestrian tracks where cycling are allowed beside pedestrians on the basis that these are recreational cyclists. Refer to Road Traffic Act, Rules and Regulations.
