Your video on this subject is superior to any other video. I spent hours trying to figure this out, looking at other videos, and your video was short, succinct, direct, and informative. I was able to go out and adjust the high RPM's in 5 minutes. Thank you so much!

100%. I too, have spent hours fiddling with it all to no success. Then I somehow did something and it worked, until I did another adjustment and ruined the setting again. After spending hours searching online for a fix, I finally stumbled across this video that is so simple and makes me feel like an idiot.

Of all the web pages i've gone to and about 10 videos, THIS IS BY FAR THE BEST EXAMPLE OF HOW TO ADJUST THE GOUVERNOR ON A SMALL ENGINE. Thank you for making and sharing this video. I knew it was a simple process but could never get a straight forward example of how to do the actual adjustment, everyone wants to talk about springs and how to "jimmy" springs to control idle speed... thanks for the video two thumbs up!!

Hi there from Australia. Your videos are fantastic! They have given me the confidence to tackle things like this instead of paying big money for someone else to fix it. And by the way, my wife is quite impressed too. Thinks I am quite the handyman thanks to you! I owe you one😉 Just about to try process and adjust my govenor. I just fixed my one piece carburetor. I cleaned out all the jets but still wouldn't work. As it happened, it was the needle getting stuck and not dropping in and out properly. Not getting fuel. I had to drill it out slightly (in reverse) just to get a little bit more clearance. No amount of cleaning worked. Thanks heaps. Mick.

If the linkage is unhooked and its hard to move, the oil slinger/governor may be broken or stuck or possibly its way out of adjustment and needs to be adjusted like in this video. Rare problem, but it does happen. Thanks for Watching!

Clockwise? Is that toward the front of that engine? I am told by a guy that has done this his whole life to turn the shaft toward the rear of the engine. I did as you show. Mower wanted to run wide open if the throttle was increase any. Finally, the gov shaft broke. Now the engine will not run. I am a little confused now. Different direction for different engines?

No No, he's right, when i said clockwise, it is clockwise when your looking at the governor arm, it will turn towards the rear of the engine. What engine was it? As far as i know they all adjust like this, i could be wrong. thanks for watching!!!

Is this a governor issue or a carb issue? HELP! THANKS

"Turn shaft CLOCKWISE" On my shredder I have a Honda GCV135 with the governor mounted on the LEFT. I notice that when I push the throttle lever fully the throttle butterfly does not open fully. The governor is under tension like you show, and totally relaxed when throttle is closed. But because I've got the air filter off I can see the butterfly open up somewhat but not fully. So since I've had the carb off, and you recommend checking the governor whenever it's been off, I'd have a go. But wanted to check I should turn the shaft left away from the engine. Could you or some knowledgeable, kind person confirm this please? Thank you!

Just recently, I have a Briggs 331877-0869-g5, about 11 years old, I did some deck repairs, tested by mowing some lawn and worked fine, when I pulled into garage, started revving to max, now, if I start it, immediately goes to high rpms, governor arm doesn't move, but if I move it by hand it will slow down. I've drained oil, gas, took deck off, getting ready to tear into it, but if you have a different opinion, let me know. I need to fix quickly, cause spring is here and the grass grows fast. Thanks, Brian

I’m a newbie. I have a Briggs and Stratton with a Nikki Carb. 15.5 HP. The throttle lever won’t adjust throttle. I have watched so many videos. I put a brand new carb on it. Still runs high throttle. And the throttle cable won’t adjust the engine speed. Could it be the governor spring? Do I need to adjust the governor? Help please.

I think I see. Every day I feel a little closer to really understanding how the governor and autochoke work. My B&S has a similar setup. It has a half moon governor shaft. I'd like to have a special tool for that. I really don't quite understand the throttle + choke position of the throttle control though. There doesn't seem to be any connection from the throttle cable to the choke at all. The only linkage for the choke leads up into the engine near the muffler, I assume this being the heat controlled autochoke. I understand the governor action in the following way: For a given midrange throttle control position, when the oil slinger (or the air vanes) go faster, such as under a decreased load, the pin comes out (or the air arm moves out), which pulls the governor arm forward (to the right), which closes the throttle valve a little bit to slow the RPM down. Similarly, when an increased load slows the engine down, the governor arm moves to the rear (to the left), opening the throttle valve a little to increase engine RPM. I can understand that. Now when you adjusted the governor arm, you were effectively adjusting the governor up against it's closest position to either the oil slinger or the air vanes (depending on the type of governor). Taryl says to hold this shaft position, then adjust the governor arm so that the throttle is all the way open (as far away from the idle screw as it will go). Then he says to tighten the governor arm to the governor shaft while holding these two positions. This agrees with what you said. So that must be correct. The spring that rides on the throttle linkage, which connects the throttle to the governor, must only serve the purpose of keeping the linkage from falling apart, and performs no other function. My throttle cable is attached to a lever having a throttle control spring running to the governor arm. This spring must be the important one. I would also assume that the clamp holding the throttle cable down should be loosened, and with the throttle control in idle, the throttle cable should be adjusted in its clamp so that the throttle control spring is just at its limp position (no tension). At idle, the throttle control spring is limp, allowing the governor arm to rest against the stop, being held against the stop by an internal spring inside the engine I assume. Here is what confuses me: The choke seems to have no input from the throttle cable, its only connection being the autochoke linkage running up inside the engine cover near the muffler. But that doesn't seem right. Obviously, the choke comes on in this throttle control position because the engine won't start cold unless it is in that position. So what am I not seeing?

I got an OHV Intek engine from Briggs and Stratton. The cold start works, but the engine throttle won’t adjust the speed. The speed stays the same and runs at a lower rpm than normal but it is not surging. If I try this, should the throttle work and run at the normal speed? Also, how can I prevent the engine from running at too high of rpms after adjusting this. Should that be a problem or is that only when the spring gets adjusted?

On a briggs intek V-twin that I am trying to fix for my parents, I did a carb swap, and because the throttle linkage had to be bent to get around the fuel line, the engine gets right into high speed. Then I tried to adjust the governor pin in various ways, one way and the lever for the throttle doesn't make the throttle move on the carb and the other it does. I'm guessing If I use a longer throttle linkage, of just the right length, the governor wouldn't have to be adjusted at all. When I adjusted the governor pin, there is only a 1/4 rotation of play..am I being too gingerly, and maybe it could be tightened more than what seems to be a stop so soon from the little apparent swing I am experiencing? I saw some adjusting where the pin is being rotated like a half or more turn. What do you think?

I wonder why some people say to rotate the governor shaft counterclockwise. I'm guessing it is for what they have known to be for some specific engines. Generally, if I am not mistaken, the shaft should be rotated till stops in the same direction as the governor arm moves to get to full throttle. Wish someone would make this clear, if I am not mistaken, again.

I have the 19.5 and I ve tried over and over again to adjust the governor. Seems like there a missing spring. One thing The slot barely moves. I've tried both ways and it still just reves. I put a spring on it like you did in one of your videos to get it to idol but the throttle won't work then. There is the small spring in the back that tighten if I open the throttle. The slide and screw on the slider I've tightened it and loosened it and it doesn't do anything either way. It doesn't seem like the governor screw moves enough. Maybe 10 digress. Do you think it should moves more and because it doesn't Maybe it's stuck or blocked somehow in the engine? I appreciate any help. I ve watched every video on utube so I am doing the adjustment the right way.

Nice video. Thank you. But wish more governor adjustment videos online would simply describe the governor adjustment at the actuator shaft not clockwise or counterclockwise, or front/rear of engine, but simply turned as far as it will go in the SAME DIRECTION that the arm moves when moving throttle to to high speed. If the arm traveled to the left when moving the throttle to high, then the shaft is turned to left until it stops. Arm goes to the right when moving throttle to high? Turn gov actuator right till stop. Much easier to remember and applies to all engines. And hold that gov arm end with a little zip tie for heck's sake till the nut is tight. "securing end of control arm while adjusting governor on snowthrower engines" is listed at no.1,446,348 in the official wiki list of 3.24 billion (and growing) recommended uses for nylon zip ties :)

Is there a way to replace the white plastic piece that holds the throttle cable in the control bracket, mine broke where the cable attaches. Thanks.

have you adjusted the cable, loosen the clamp, set the throttle to fast then pull the plastic (or metal if its a older engine) all the way back? If you've done that, then you need a new governor spring, the one thats on it is stretched and needs replaced. Thanks for Watching!!!

Thanks for the video, it was actually very very helpful. Question though: I have a 14hp B&S riding lawn mower engine. I'm putting it on a go-kart frame for a friend of mine, and I have seen a lot of videos that say you should remove the governor to let the engine rev higher. But as I soon figured out, the governor goes along with the oil flinger, which obviously is necessary. So how would i remove the governor w/out having to remove the flinger? Also, how would removing the governor arm on the exterior affect how the throttle does it's job? Thank you

Your welcome! I don't recommend removing the governor on small engines, they won't take it. It will throw a rod or break the counterweight link. But if your going to do it, you don't have to take it apart, do away with the assembly where the throttle would normally mount, or leave it in place and connect your throttle cable directly to the linkage going to the carburetor's throttle plate (the long linkage that runs from the governor arm to the carburetor that i showed in the video). (or simply, remove the long linkage between the throttle assembly and carburetor, connect your cable with a new clamp directly to the carburetor's throttle plate, the same way that a manual choke is connected). So basically your not "removing" the governor, but your bypassing it. But it will blow up, especially if you give it WOT and keep it there, been there and done it, look up one of my early videos (not hd) i show the aftermath of a 14.5 (basically the same as your 14) after it threw the rod out the side of the block! If you gear it right (chain sprocket sizes) you will be surprised of what you can get out of a stock engine. Because they have decent stock low end torque. If your willing to sink some money into it, go to eccarburetors.com and you can upgrade the rod, flywheel and counterweight link, its expensive, but with that you can build a serious racing engine. Hope this helps, if you have any other questions feel free to ask! Thanks for Watching!!!

Hi, i got a 18 hp, Briggs, vertical shaft. The engine has just started revving high out of control regardless where the throttle lever is. I took the cover off and cleaned everything in and around the carb and governor controls. I also lubed with WD 40. Didn't seem to help. I did notice that I can easily push the governor lever/carb lever to lower the rpms. Engine is about 13 years old and has a LOT of hours on it. What do you think problem might be? Thanks

Try to adjust the governor like in this video, if that doesn't help then i'd say the problem is inside with the internal governor/oil slinger. Hope this helps. Thanks for Watching!!!

Either it broke or it was adjusted in the wrong direction, but going by your other comment i'd say the internal part broke. Thanks for Watching!!!

Would it be the same clockwise turn for a vertical shaft 6.5 B&S? I recently installed a new carb on my mower and now when starting the engine runs at really high rpm. I'm guessing this is the problem.
@fnaguitarplayer9
@fnaguitarplayer9 10 жыл бұрын
yes, it would adjust exactly the same. Its pretty much the same on most brands and types of small engines, there are some variances though, you can always check, the governor arm moves in the same direction that increases throttle on the carburetor, opening the throttle plate up. Sounds like it could be that or a linkage is in a bind. Thanks for Watching!!!

Crafts Eager 1. I cleaned carb and put it back. Still no start or run for just 1 second. I saw that the governor/throttle linkage was pulling to the right so that the throttle was closed. I forced it to the left and engine ran full blast. So I saw that the governor spring linkage (just below the other linkage) was too loose and this enabled the governor throttle linkage to keep throttle closed (pulling to right) preventing start and running. So I took slack off the spring and the stronger spring pull (to the left) allowed the throttle plate to be more open and the mower to run. So because the spring was stretched out, the governor was able to pull the throttle plate shut preventing running. Does this make sense? Thanks for your videos but this push mower governor linkages are difficult to understand problems. I have other mowers with same problems.

I have a tiller with a Briggs stratton model 1263120580b8 engine. The throttle stays in the wide open position and I'm assuming that the governor is supposed to adjust the the throttle once the engine starts up but thats not happening it's staying wide open. When the throttle is in the wild open position the governor moves in the opposite direction as the governor in your video, so when I adjust the governor shaft, shouldn't I turn it counter clockwise? If I turn it clockwise, then the governor won't move at all. Or should I adjust the governor with the throttle up against the idle screw in the closed position and turn the shaft in the clockwise position?
@fnaguitarplayer9
@fnaguitarplayer9 9 жыл бұрын
Mark Shelton You will have to turn it in the same direction it turns when its opening the throttle, so if you turn it clockwise and the throttle opens, that is correct. It could also be just a rusted up spring or a linkage binding up as well. Thanks for watching!!!

It depends, if its a push mower engine the governor is external (air vane) but if its like what i show in the video, its more than likely a linkage in a bind. It is possible for the internal parts to have broke or seized up, its rare but it happens, what I would do is remove the carburetor and unhook the linkage, then see if it moves free, if not it could be the spring hanging up or something wrong with the oil slinger/governor inside it. hard to say without seeing it. thanks for watching!

After using your info about adjusting governor I adjusted as you described and it still revving when throttle moved up to engage mower.

Usually if this doesn't fix it, it can be a linkage bent or a spring that is to tight, usually from being installed in wrong hole on the arm or the arm is bent to much, worst case would be the internal governor part (oil slinger/governor weights) is bad or broke. Thanks for Watching!!!
