I was thinking the same thing. Why do these scenarios need smart contracts?
@dysonfilmstw47643 жыл бұрын
@@Iamnotasuit Beacuse smart contracts don't require a third party. So there will be no trust issues unlike the traditional network, where you have to build a trust for the transaction to complete.

@@dysonfilmstw4764 Exactly, the decentralized nature of chains like Cardano, to use an example would eliminate the need for escrow companies for example in a real estate deal. The chain holds the transaction in a escrow account until the contract is fulfilled, then could deposit the money into the previous property owners wallet.

immutable ID for refugees ...can't think of another way of guaranteeing that ...especially at scale (and offering permanent, near global access to that ID for when they return home, post war/crisis) urban gardens: incorporating an immutable, trustless, highly secure and verifiable and individually tailored agreement between renter & owner would be absolutely essential in order to persuade owners to sign up their gardens . as well as to formalise the terms of access and to reassure home owners that leasing out a part of their property (garden) is safe and that they can terminate etc without dispute. would you let stranger/s access your garden 2 or 3 times a week without a background check and a binding contract to help protect you and your home? probably the cheapest, clearest , fairest tailored contractual agreements on earth.

Great video. Really enjoyed listening to Olga. Really put it all across really well, for the average person, to get their head around this very important topic.
@vinay327242 жыл бұрын
Olga delivered an awesome talk. I sometimes still question myself is smart contracts/blockchain the only way to solve this problem ? Are we solving a problem in a blockchain way rather than solving it in a much simpler way. Census, renting urban land in developed countries , matching kidneys etc are typically doesn’t sound like blockchain based problems for me. For me blockchain based problem basically should root from lack of trust on the service provider. One example is real estate in developing countries like India. In india , real estate registrations are done by the govt organisation. There are a ton of instances where people working in that organisations manipulate land records and register them to unwanted people in exchange of a bribe. Typically there is no transparency log available to verify the authenticity of chain of transactions and no way to validate double registrations. Insurance is another sector I believe the people are at mercy of the insurance (service) provider to get the claim processed rather than defined agreement. Probably solving these kind of problems are more impactful

Blockchain and SMART Contracts are going to micro-manage and control our lives beyond anything we can imagine. SMART is an acronym for: Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology. This is about surveillance and control, not liberation. Life will increasingly become a series of conditional privileges you must earn based on criteria created by banks, corporations and governments. Think of enforcable automated terms and conditions on steroids. Of course a lawyer would be in support of this.

smart contract is basically an IF ... THEN function. IF x THEN do y, that is the gist of it. this is a foundation rules in software programming OR they way we do business. IF 'you give me $100', THEN ' I will give you 15 min massage'. IF 'you give me $200.000', THEN 'I will give you my house'. You get the point. Our world is run by this 'smart contract' or 'IF ... THEN ...' rules. That's basically it. This is why smart contract blockchain is going to rule the world, because our world is already run by smart contract BUT not in the blockchain. Blockchain just so that NOT ONE ENTITY controlling it. Right now, we have to 'TRUST' a person, an entity, a company, a government .... In blockchain world we don't have to 'TRUST' anyone, so it is more Neutral.

I’ve been trying to understand the hype and wisdom behind smart contracts. This video same as all the many others iv’e watched doesn’t really explain anything innovative or revolutionary. They all mention the vending machine example. Great so a digital vending machine this is the upcoming revolution? Any IF stipulation in Visual Basic, or C+ does the same for years. Storing data anonymously? Any ordinary survey is capable of such. Executing contracts automatically to rent office spaces? Isn’t that a commercial Air B&B? There are many comments of excited people who seem to understand the profoundness and invocation of smart contracts and I simply ask what is it that makes it so great and promising? I am not trying to be cynical and I am a huge fan and investor of crypto. Just really trying to get a good understanding of what seem to be the future and none of these you tube videos explain anything significant. Would appreciate an answer from anyone who has this knowledge.

Smart contract can be immensely valuable in Nigeria, where I'm from by the exact attribute that is a public ledger which is immutable. Here, I see a wide range of vital applications - land ownership and history can be properly documented and verified and all sort of properties ranging from intellectual, tangibles and non-tangibles. Issues around the history of culture, language, art, education, families, villages and the entirety of the races can be resolved, inclusive and again Immutable. More interesting, this all happens at lighting speed and without the administrative complexities. However, I have my fears too, as human prejudice can alter the purity of data that will inadvertently be taken as immutable.
@reemlewit7433 жыл бұрын
@@omoOluwa I appreciate you taking the time to answer however you response is again exactly reflects what I expressed in my comment above. Everyone is using high words and bombarding statements like - vital applications, endless uses etc I still unable to understand what smart contracts adding to today’s existing technology. Storing land ownership data? come on this can be stored on any computer using simple softwares. If you can just give 2-3 real life examples of smart contracts in places that are vital and cannot be addressed with endless other existing softwares and/or technologies.

Well, as a lawyer trying to learn this tech let me give you an example. Hope you know about NFTs. NFTs are collectibles in digital format and it can be digital art, virtual world, or a customised gun in any game. When you buy that stuff, you will get the ownership, and say in PubG, the gun you bought can't be sold away. But by smart contracts, you will get the ownership of the gun so that there will be more room for creativity and these customized stuff we buy can be resold as the transactions can be recorded in the online ledger. No one can copy that particular stuff as a rule based copyright infringement system works unlike an AI systems in KZbin how it works now. Similarly land records can't be changed as transactions are immutable.

No me he enterao' de na'!! Muy atractivo, pero ni me he enterado de qué es un Smart Contract, ni cómo funciona y menos aún cómo llegaría a materializarse en todos esos fantásticos supuestos que nos ha presentado.

None of these applications really require blockchain technology. I work in the space and wish it grows. But I am still having trouble convincing myself the applications of this technology beyond financial and gaming

@@Einnor084 really catchy note here. essentially web 3.0 is about data ownership and freedom of data usage as a result of liberated ownership. It's not about functionality which is a solved topic in web 2.0

So...how does it actually work? All I got out of this is that it's a vending machine for contracts. Who decides when the contract is fulfilled? How is it fullfilled? What is to prevent someone from simply not paying? This isn't discussed at all!
@shansen0083 жыл бұрын
TO oversimplify it: Your id is on the blockchain, you decide you will buy property from another party. A smart contract is produced. Perhaps it creates an "escrow" wallet where funds for the purchase of property can be deposited. Once the purchase price is fully deposited to that wallet, the digital NFT representing the deed or ownership of that property is transferred to the new owners wallet and the crypto in the "escrow" wallet is transferred to the previous property owner. No banks involved. Oracles like chainlink and others will probably start to harvest data off the blockchain and form a sort of credit reporting service so you can tell a persons rate of default on these types of contracts. With a little imagination, the possibilities are endless.

it did contribute to the topic. BC/SC tech WILL make the world 'better' 'more functional' and 'more just' . her little background tale, though likely mot true, tied the whole talk together, from start to the finish. ..IMO

..and public can view that anonymized data, so we all have the same census data/ info that the politicians have and were given....might make them think twice before telling lies and/ or spending the money needed for new community projects on their rich mates instead. GREATER ACCOUNTABILITY = better, more functional, more just world

@@noneofyourbizness I do want to hold gov accountable but census data is and should stay confidential imo. It was wrong that gov used it to track down japanese living in the US during WW2 and then muslims and middle easterns after 9/11. Personally i wouldnt answer census and it’s not required as long as you dont give false information which is punishable

I still don't understand how this is different than websites and applications we have today. In the urban farming example, I don't get exactly what smart contracts do. Can't you just have a website where you match people who want to farm & people who have backyard space to offer? What exactly does the smart contract assist with?

imagine a world where all politicians had to use smart contracts - most of those in power today would never go into politics if we could see where all the money is and who's getting paid - here in Ontario Canada they closed 2 gas plant to secure an election and cost the tax payer 2 billion, then they hired someone to erase all the office computers and like magic no accountability or punishment happened to the party but the guy who was hired to erase the computers got 2-3 months behind bars cause he wasn't certified to work on government computers. If they had used a smart contract their would be politicians behind bars and the taxpayers could've seen how the deal was executed and why it cost 2 billion. We're at a time now where there are no good excuses not to put government contracts on the block-chain and make them accessible to the public. I know Cardano has started working with countries in Africa to build peoples trust with new governments and its time for the west to do this too.
