And the only reason I don't smoke is because my main bully has been encouraging my other bullies to bully me by giving the cigarettes away. Her uncle, while collecting unemployment, smuggled cheap Bosnian cigarettes here to Croatia for a profit. When my bully came as a new student to our school she was 9 and already smoking. Her mom knew she was smoking that young. It was allowed in her family. We went to different highschools and she dropped out because she was too busy doing drugs with her friends to go to school and got pregnant with another addict. The kid was showing some health problems associated with mom doing drugs while pregnant so she was taken away from the bully girl and adopted. The bully girl was in the newspaper 2 years later. They portrayed her as a very dumb criminal. She is probably out of prison by now. So, here is the reason why I don't smoke. We are not the same.

Even though the health detriments of smoking are very well-known today, a lot of smokers just don't want to quit and say stuff like "but it calms me down". I quit more than 7 years ago. The first 3 days came with some withdrawal symptoms, the rest of it was just getting over the habit. One of the things that annoy me the most is seeing people who have managed to quit start smoking again. 2 of my friends quit smoking for their pregnancy, stayed off of cigarettes for more than 1,5 years total and just started again once they were done breastfeeding. Swede here. I've never smoked myself, but my mom smoked all throughout my adolescent life. Most of my memories from her consists of her holding a cigarette. To this very day, 30+ years later, catching the scent of a cigarette feels strangely nostalgic for me, familiar even. Also, as some extra trivia, Swedes are more interested in "Snus", which is a form of tobacco that you put under your upper lip, and keep it there to get the nicotine hit. While less dangerous than smoking (Since there's no burning or inhalation involved), it can still cause issues in your mouth, like messing up your teeth, or even create pockets under your lip that just gets deeper and deeper, the more the snus attacks your body. Some people have several inches deep pockets like this. Top tip: Don't google images of those pockets, that shit is nasty!

Well done for giving up. Me and my friend visited Sarajevo in January and we could tell that there was a big smoking problem. 8:50 I think the chart for Scandinavia is a bit misleading. Smoking have become more and more unusual here and virtually no youth smokes anymore. However, snus is quite popular still. It's fermented tobacco that you put under the lip and gives more nicotine then cigarettes, but none of the bad health effects. I can thank snus for managing to quit smoking myself, but now I'm more addicted to snus then I ever was for smoking.

I quit smoking over a decade ago. What worked for me was using both nicotine patches and nicotine gum. The patch keeps your blood nicotine levels up and stable, so that even if you do have a cigarette, it isn't pleasant. Then, use nicotine gum to have the element of control and to periodically spike your nicotine levels if you need it for work, focusing, as a reward, etc.

This reminded me of when I was around 17-18 back in 2010s and here, in Poland, a lot of people my age already smoked. Goverment started to be more and more strict on tobacco laws, especially in terms of taxes on them, so peers from the local choir, who regulary performed some religious songs in Medjugorje and some other sacred place in Macedonia used to buy A LOT of cigarretes there and bring them back to Poland to sell them to us at slightly higher price, but still cheaper than in stores. In Bulgaria, close to where i live, there are 3 high-schools. Every time i pass by one of them there are dozens of young teens outside the school smoking. The lack of any school/teacher/parent control is shocking. Those are 14 year olds that are on a pack a day. Shocking thing to me is that it didn't use to be like that 20 years ago when I was at school. There was smoking, sure, but it wasn't so mass and obvious. Smoking has taken over the schools here big time.

I managed to quit this year after smoking for decades. The nicotine lies. You'll be in a bad mood for a few days, but then you'll be free, you will no longer crave it. It's not like you go through life desperately ignoring the urge to smoke, no. A week goes by and you are free. A few months goes by and you no longer think of it. It helps to replace your smoke breaks with coffee breaks, so you aren't giving up your little moments of peace in the day.

I'm a Balkanac, unlike most of the people watching this. As a high school and later university student I would help my grandparents run a corner shop during the summer. I've lost count of the packs of cigarettes I would stock and then sell. Almost all the shoppers would buy a pack of smokes, some kind of cheap alcohol (usually a beer, sold in 1L plastic bottles) or most often both. Sometimes, you almost feel sorry for these people, but at the end of the day you had to take their money and keep them coming regularly. Sure, we would sell other stuff but tobacco and alcohol were 3/4 of the revenue. I also have never smoked tobacco up until now and I probably won't.
