Signing Sancho and Ronaldo in the same window is just abysmal from a sporting point of view. That is 2 players you needed the least, building on how the team played last season. Interesting. I think, since none of Manchester's strikers really does anything remotely linked to pressing, playing a high press against Liverpool is basically harakiri no matter how you try to employ it. @@1colinb when did I say that we were? Pressing is a tactical decision, I never said United have to press. But if a team is going to press then they need to do it with a system and structure so that it works and doesn't just open up space for the opposition like we saw against Liverpool. Burnley don't press, Jose parks the bus, even Conte prefers a low block out of possession but whatever the tactic is the key thing is to do it with some structure and strategy.. that's what the manager and coaching staff are supposed to be for, hence why we see clueless individuals on the pitch every week.

Would they tolerate a front 4 today where hustling defenders is not part of their skill set?
@mohammeddmalik3 жыл бұрын
@@1colinb then we are in agreement mate, I'm not saying we have to counterpress, it's just of style of play. Just like zonal marking or man to man marking, both are fine just so long as they are done well. The problem at United is not the squad or players, it's clearly the lack of coaching and tactics. 3 years at the club and we still have no style of play other than moments of individual brilliance. And to answer your question, Jose, LVG and Moyes are not known for counterpressing either so I agree with you. I think SAF probably would have deployed it by now though as he was always able to evolve with the game and the front press is a fairly recent addition to top tier football.

I was talking to my brother, Thursday night, and saying this is how I'd set up for the game. 3-4-1-2. Maguire, Lindelof and Wan-Bissaka in the back three. (Bissaka offers nothing going forward but can tackle, so may as well try him there.) That way you have enough back that if one inevitably fucks up, there should be cover. Play Shaw as the more defensively minded wing-back on the left. Play Sancho as a wing-back on the right with the idea being he can be a bit more attacking as Wan-Bissaka can be behind that area. You play Fred and Van De Beek in the middle. Fred does work hard, and with 3 behind him is less likely to be exposed. Van De Beek can offer Pogba's passing range but, as we saw against West Ham, he's much better at getting stuck in and disrupting play as well. Basically, he's a slightly less technical Pogba with a much higher work-rate. You play Bruno as a 10. Not a false 9 - where he's pretty much useless - but as an actual 10 who drops back sometimes and dictates things. He can do this, I've seen him do it at Portugal. Then you have Ronaldo and Cavani up top. Ronaldo to cause enough threat to pin back Liverpool's defenders, and Cavani doing his 'run-around-like-a-matador' thing. Not saying this team would win, but I doubt it would let in 5.
@bri10853 жыл бұрын
The midfield would still be be over run, don't understand why united have to insist on having a forward in midfield in Bruno.
@pinealdreams10643 жыл бұрын
@@bri1085 Possibly, yes. Perhaps Bruno is best-served missing out on these games. Thing is, he isn't a forward though, he's a 10. It's just that Ole insists on playing him so damn high he feels like a forward. Portugal used him in a 3 when behind against Belgium. While they didn't quite come back, they did take control of the game and possession for the last 20 minutes and Bruno was a big part of that. But sure, if you really wanted to, you could drop Bruno for Matic. Problem then is the team can't get out to attack.
@bri10853 жыл бұрын
@@pinealdreams1064 I mean you could probably drop Fabinho for Salah at Liverpool, and he'd fine for the most part, but you're losing his best assets. Bruno is a forward for all intents and purposes that's where his best assets lie, not in the middle third but the final third

0:20 Man U used a 4-2-3-1 but because Fernandes, Rashford and Greenwood are strikers, it was 4-2-4 Fred and McTominay are overwhelmed, double pivot needed to cover too much space. Greenwood and Rashford would sometimes come back to help mids but they didn’t do much. 1:32 Man U are trying to press a great team with players who do not press. Fernandes is busy but rarely wins the ball, and Greenwood doesn’t understand the triggers for pressing. 2:19 First Goal - Greenwood tries to help with pressing Robertson and Milner, Right back Wan-Bissaka comes up for no reason, Lindelof and MacGuire and Shaw shift to the right 3:02 First Goal - Pass to Jota, there is overload for Liverpool in a narrow shape, which is good cause there are lots of bodies for counter-pressing (when they lose the ball), and they can do through passes. 3:24 First Goal - what Liverpool actually do when Jota have the ball - Keita and Robertson make aggressive runs. Keita scores. Too easy. Man U no defensive structure. 4:16 Halftime, Pogba on, Greenwood off. 4-3-1-2 Diamond midfield. McTominay comes into 6. Not suited to this position. Rarely free for the pass. Fred should be playing here. 5:26 Pogba zone. Gets caught in possession in the midfield. This regularly happens and Liverpool scored off this. Pogba sent off after this. 6:23 Coaching problems - don’t know how to press, out of position, leaving spaces everywhere. Bad tactics 6:46 - Striker Cavani on, Fernandes off. Rashford on, Left back Dalot on. 5 defensive backs makes sense. Fred and McTominay as split midfield, Cavani was centre of midfield as a box to box striker.

Cavani didn't stop the goals by coming on, Pogba did by getting sent off. Seriously, it was after the red card that Liverpool stopped trying. The Cavani change was abysmal too. He had McFred and Cavani playing as this narrow 3 man midfield, but Liverpool just walked around the wings of it and the 3 never seemed to have any idea what they were doing. They didn't press properly, they didn't sit back in a tight block properly, they didn't maintain their structure across the 3 of them and Henderson and Jones just picked through them for the last half hour Ole was dreadful in his tactics from start to finish.

What Solskjaer needs to understand is that if a tactic or plan works with other teams that don't mean a similar tactic will work with this team, Machester United has a very weak defense, both upfront while pressing and at the back, I still don't understand what made him think that playing a pressing football against Liverpool could make them win the game, United players can't even win the ball in midfield it was totally dominated by Liverpool. If anyone had seen yesterday's El Classico you might have seen how Barca was pressing always but Madrid had players like Kroos, Modric, Vinicius who could take the ball and dribble past players, United didn't have anyone to do that, Fred, McTominay, Pogba were just useless, I felt it would have been better if Rashford and Greenwood did something more like Vinicius to take the ball out.
