How Sonic The Hedgehog 2 Shatters Expectations

I feel I should clarify my current position on all of this since this video still gets traction from time to time. I'm not a big fan of this video anymore, and I would make it very, *very* differently if I got the chance to do it over. I wrote this video over the course of about a month, beginning the literal day I got out of the cinema after seeing Sonic Movie 2. I was very much on a high of it being not as bad as Movie 1, and upon rewatch of this video it is SO apparent I let that high control the narrative I was trying to portray. I don't like Movie 2, it's an undeniable improvement over the previous film, but it carries over a lot of fundamental issues from the first movie. It's clear I felt that even at the time of making this, given just how often this "review" leans into the negativity - so many "this is good but"s and similar sentiments. However I failed to realize that was my perspective, instead framing the whole thing as if the movie had successfully met my standards with only a few small issues, which it had not. I'm ultimately fairly content with the points I try to make here, though I think my execution of them is needlessly spiteful and aggressive. It's the framing that mostly lets this whole thing down, my complete failure to properly recognize where my own head was at. I've tried to be more conscious of that as of late, you'll notice I'm fairly slow to cover anything recently released nowadays. That's because I want to make sure I understand my own thoughts and perspective rather thoroughly before committing anything to video. The only exceptions to this are my "niknatter"-esc videos, though I try to make it clear those are simply my "off the cuff" thoughts. I'd like to thank anyone and everyone who checked this video out, even the people who disliked it - there's always something to learn from people's negative reactions so it's all good. I do apologize to any fans of the movie-verse who I might've misled with such an optimistic-sounding title though, again my failure to properly recognize and verbalize my perspective. I'll try to be much more upfront and honest with my rather negative viewpoint in any future movie-verse videos I may end up making, I'd rather not stomp on anyone's parade who does happen to enjoy Paramount's offerings. Gotta hard disagree on the Knuckles speed “nitpick”. they don’t explicitly say it in the movie but it is very clearly demonstrated that he can only run about as fast as a car (like 40mph-ish). We never see him run any faster than that in the movie. When they’re running next to each other in the final battle, Sonic is CLEARLY not moving at top speed, even considering that they retconned it so he can’t do the Time In A Bottle/Quicksilver thing anymore

(I'm not really happy with this video at this point but the interest is still appreciated) Secondly, unless I'm forgetting something major, when did they retcon the Time In A Bottle ability? He used it earlier in the film on the snowy mountain to get past all those badniks.

The fundamental problem with “this is not sonic the hedgehog” is that sonic the hedgehog from the games does not grow, he is a static character who elevate other character arcs. So if you were to adapt sonic, you’d have to change him anyways, but at that point why not the movie sonic we have already? Any other way sonic would just be a repeat of other sonics from different mediums that have been given more problematic characteristics, like boom sonic, but even then we have never gotten a proper origin for sonic, and this sonic has the most room to grow thanks to him being, ironically, not sonic. What makes it even more embarrassing is that one of the main criticisms that he had about the sonic movies is that they were “butchering” the characters, like no wonder you called knuckles dumb.

@@niknokYT Because you are a disappointment-not like to your family or anything, but as a KZbinr, and, if I want to push it, a person. Any constructive criticism gets blocked out by constant complaints to the point where I only hear the complaints and not criticism, which might not just go for me, but go for you. You make claims about things, yet you hypocritically do the same, and so that leads to you lowering your standards. You will bring up random people in your videos just do trash them, which I personally think it’s not funny, but I guess it’s fine, but when it gets to a point when you say “fuck you, you coward” that’s when I start to raise an eyebrow. Have you noticed that I’ve only commented on your sonic videos, mostly movie ones? It’s because those are the videos that expose your nature the most, but then again, it seems like the whole sonic franchise seem to expose your the most. It’s those videos where I see hypocrisy, it’s those videos where I see an angry child, it’s those videos where you point the middle finger to anybody you would like too, with no regard. These are the videos where I see those actions be the most act upon. To be honest, I am a Sonic fan I like to see sonic videos, I actually haven’t watched the spider verse video, or the crash bandicoot video, but even then why should I when you’ve shown how bad you can already be by just having a bias against it. What really hits home for me, is how much you stay on Twitter, which is known for spreading hate, yet you constantly post their. For me that really explains a lot of your actions, and starts to make me think, maybe you’re worse than I thought. Even still, I watch your other videos, like one about the egg dragoon, which was unique, and it was just you showing your passion for this neglected thing. Yet you’re most viewed videos, and almost feel like a majority of your videos, are the ones where you complain.

Been watching a couple of your videos recently and this one was a treat especially. I really appreciate how incredibly in-depth the discussion was and I heard some perspectives here that I honestly have not heard anywhere else. And even beyond the bare talking, there was so many extra things to appreciate, and the great editing really elevated the video as a whole. Also, Go Time having >30K views at the time of you uploading this astounds me, I would expect it to have way more.

Boom Sonic: Takes Sonic's snarkiness and laid back attitude and amplifies that Movie Sonic: Takes Sonic's fun loving and (implied) ADHD, and amplifies that Prime Sonic: Uhhhh.... Multiverse- Feel free to disagree with me, I know Sonic is a difficult topic to even other Sonic fans. But I don't think Movie Sonic is just a surface level idea of Sonic. I think that title belongs to Prime Sonic Adapting Sonic in different stories would be the same as adapting any character into a different story. You're gonna have to make changes to fit that narrative. And I am personally okay with Movie Sonic being a younger, more goofy character than the games. Much like how I am with Boom Sonic being a egotistical dickhead sometimes. If I wanted these versions of Sonic to be the same as the games, I would just play the games. I CAN'T however say the same for Prime Sonic, because that version legitimately has nothing for me to work with, as he just feels like a watered down Movie Sonic to me, and I feel like Sonic Prime wasted the Across The Sonic-Verse idea on a bland Sonic instead of one with more character. He feels like someone just read Sonic's personality off of a wiki. Which is funny, because I don't think Sonic Prime was written by the Colors Era writers But anyway, away from the Sonic Prime tangent. Yeah, I'm alright with Movie Sonic not being exactly the same as Game Sonic. Just thought I'd share that. When it comes to your complaints about knuckles and tails; for the former he still is considerably smarter then his game counter part by virtue of not being tricked at bare minutes two times by the same character(and anyone who wants to appear intelligent shouldn't excuse that happening in adventure 1 because of his temper). When it comes to tails, it's odd that you would spend so much time trying to critique the film based on accuracy to the games, yet get so much information about the games wrong. That's not to say your less of a sonic fan because you don't know that much about the games, but if you're going to uses facts from the games against the movie, you should make sure those facts are correct. An example of your mistakes is not understanding tails being a little brother figure initially and having a poor translation device comes from the manuals and games respectively. Your stance that tails does nothing for the plot falls apart practically immediately when you remember, Several scenes where his involvement progresses the plot( which you both ignore yet also oddly show), the fact that his inclusion adds to sonics and knuckles story which you acknowledge yet barely attempt to refute, claim nothing from the dance comes back in the finale while literally showings scenes of a device that's used in the dance that comes back the finale, and bizzarely assert that tails brains plays no part him being a distraction; despite the tools he uses and the manner in which he goes about it both requiring his intelligence. Ignoring all of that for a moment, complaining about tails just being a tag along is fairly disingenuous when that's the role he played in sonic 2 and 3; hell the movie actually shows him more respect by allowing him to participate in the cliamx unlike his game counterpart in his introduction. Yes knuckles has more prominence in the plot, but that's because his introduction game had his people and his role in their traditions as a crucial plot points. Meanwhile sonic is just the plot of sonic 1 again on now sonic has a sidekick. If you want to say the movie should have done more than the games that's fine, but be consistent in criticisms and apply them to the games as well when their also are at fault.

13:55 No? they really wouldnt have ? considring that they where far enough from green hill that it was sunset while in Green hill it was just middle of the day even if knuckles and sonic ran as fast as each other considering they had to run from hawai begin 2,393 miles considring how sonic even got tired while trying to distract the death egg by the time they made it to san fransico they would have been tired out and by the point they arrivie to green hills it would be total dust and destruction and by the time they arrived they would be way and i mean way to tired to fight the death egg and you have to put into considoration that both had just fought each other and then just survived almost getting drowned not to mention both knuckles and sonic dont have rings they would not made it in time getting back to hawia from the island would be one thing getting to san fransisco from hawia and then to green hills is one other story
