Washing the shoe and insole is good after a run but don't put it on or under a radiator. The material and the adhesive will weaken from the prolonged heat and come apart much sooner. Put the wet shoes under a fan for the night and by morning they'll be dry. Washing and drying this way also helps with odor.

I found a quote in Kingsley's book about cleaning your shoes besides keeping them fresh and healthy :). I had never thought about this viewpoint either but seems very plausible. Kingsley: "Bio-security is a topic that many trail and fell runners are uneducated on, and some simple steps can be followed to secure the national park from Non-Native Invasive Species (NNIS). Dirty running shoes can transport NNIS to and around the national park without a runner being aware they are doing it. Before travelling to a national park you should wash down your shoes and running kit at home. A quick wash and brushing of your shoes only takes a minute and you should do the same before returning home. Diseases such as ash die back and foot-and-mouth are easily spread, as are seeds from NNIS including American skunk cabbage an Himalayan balsam."

This older video caught my eye. At just 2 mins 20 in a reference to 2020. Ah, if only we could have seen into the future ... Great video though. I once thought (30 years ago) that a marathon was my aspirational pinnacle which I first conquered in 1989. Many years of not running before returning this year rather heavier and considerably less fit, I am aiming for a half marathon distance in January and a marathon distance in October. I would like to go ultra in 2022 but I can manage with a lot less than 100 miles thanks! 🙂

Thanks Claire for such positive and informative videos. Forthe waterproof socks vs waterproof shoes debate - I used to wear gortex shoes, but for my last ultra in July (middle of winter here in NZ) switched to waterproof socks, and I'm glad I did. They did the business for me and kept me warm and dry all day. My race goals - I've just 'signed' up for the 'Tip Track Marathon' It's not an official race, barely organised and probably insane. Last year there were less than 30 people doing it. It consists of six (yes six) return trips up a steep track that climbs for 3,5kms on an old, rough, old reef rock trail. Sounds like a bunch of fun ;-) I've got a bit over a month to train for it. The inflatable vest has some merit if it was implemented a bit better. Instead of large air pockets, if it was more tailored and created a thinner layer and allowed for pack straps etc then it might work. Or you could use it as a thermal layer once to stop moving. Thanks again for the videos, I'm enjoying watching them ;-)

Woo Hoo got another mention... Thanks! Good stuff as always, I realize now I missed a few over the last week with a lot of travelling and completely addicted to the the UTMB race coverage - I watched a ton when I could last week CCC, TDS, and UTMB mostly. The Chinese folks really came at it hard this year, how about the couple that finished 2nd and 1st in CCC - maybe Kilian and Emilie have some comp... Next race goal is to get the points to run at UTMB next year - as you know we were talking about Wicklow Way 50 Miler which is in December and I got so much response due to your help (thanks again Claire) and found a Facebook group for the race and runners as well so all set there - I do have some others before that - Brooklyn Half with a friend and a 50K in NY as well in November.

Good stuff I flew over and hiked the UTMB course in 2015 with a camping support tour company to move the gear everyday and the only downside was my guide was very intent on controlling the group and there were several people who were not prepared and this was the pace I also saw a lot of people doing it with micro tents and due to amount of rain the area gets this didn’t really seem like a lot of fun to me I think the best way casual way-around would be to plan your days around the hostels locations As far as socks and shoes I did my best stuff year round with Merril Moab Gore-Tex as I need wide and they kept my feet warm and dry on 5 F days on snow 50Ks At least for me it was always about avoiding chafe and ANY toenail rubbing as toe nails just end badly and I have lost way to many in the learning processes but I finally found the right combo to avoid and blisters or toenails up to 50 mile events and the big one for me was just being willing to stop often enough to use body glide on my feet and just keep them clean an free of trail grit I have some showers pass waterproof socks but for me it’s gotta be really crazy wet for that to be the best choice as there a bit tough to avoid chafe I never made it to 100 miles due to health speed bumps but the big thing that worked for me was to just keep moving at a steady pace and taking care of myself and keeping it fun

Thanks for the Video, the double skin socks looks interesting as I always get a blister under the arch of my foot when wearing my Hoka ATR's, so this could save a pair a of trainers. My next big goal is to make the Giants head marathon in June my 42nd marathon 2 days after my 42nd birthday.... its a big ask as I have only done 19 marathons so far!

Hi Claire, I'll get some and let you know how I get on, fingers crossed they work as I really like the Hokas otherwise. Since writing that message I have completed the slightly lumpy Crafty Fox Marathon on Saturday so I just have to do 21 now before June :) Have you done the Giants Head? This year it sold out within 20 mintues! - Mike
@Brockdorf6 жыл бұрын
I have a full Ironman Nov 3 and then a 100 mile run Nov 30 (2 week recovery+2 week taper=0 days training), which leaves very little time to train for the 100, so I should be able to report on the min amount you need to train for a 100. I totally agree on watertight socks but NOT the shoes. Not because of the price of the shoe, but you can change socks real easy, but very hard to bring extra pair of shoes if it winds up very hot or you can't stop the water from getting in the shoe and filling up.

Yeah maybe il wait for 2020 for a hundred, or not! I don't really like races that take me out for a month! 26.2 = 4.05 (in 2012!) - I've beaten this in a couple of ultras! I just need to enter one! going for 3.25 10M = 1.12 got 1.13 at Burnsall with no expectations, a hilly one the other week so the right race and I should nail it) 10K = 43 (in 2011!) Should get it, just need to enter a road 10k, which I haven't done for a while! 5K = 19:45 (in 2016) - this is the tough one, i'm currently averaging over a minute slower and 37 seconds at best recent parkrun...

I wash straight away after runs and they look clean but I can’t seem to stop the armpits from smelling again within minutes of wearing. @kozepz6 жыл бұрын
Hi Claire, thanks for your reply! Do I need to upgrade my navigation skills with map and compass for the Lake District area? For the the Chamonix area everything is so well signed that map and compass are somewhat unnecessary. I’d like to avoid too technical scrambling parts as I do not have those skills yet. Or is there also an option to a guided scrambling adventure like in one of your video’s? I’m still recovering from a unlucky fall near Les Contamines cutting of half of my holiday period which I like to avoid in the future :) What period would you advise to visit the LD area? I like it when it’s a little bit more quiet hence skipping future visits to Chamonix during the UTMB week which has exploded. Thanks for your great content! Remco
