Yea crazy stupid prices for "model kits" or whatever they are called I to wanted Legos sets like this ( also Gundam kits) but they cost a lot of money . My parents Convince me ( which I believe they where right) get a new video game you can play with your friends etc. So they got me a "cheap" 30 dollar video game that had 2 players. And it was a lot cheaper and also I probably wouldn't finish building it anyway. Which they where right lol . I got a Gundam kit cost a lot and I wasn't really enjoying building and painting it.

Aside from some other episodes that are made in 6 days, they often come up with multiple possible episodes and will "bank" some ideas for when they're just stuck with no ideas. So a fair amount of episodes have story work over weeks to months before fully executing in animation. Funnily enough they say those are often the hardest to finish when they decide to make it a weeks episode, the ones that take 6 days are often the easiest because it all fall into place easily and banked episodes were banked because they couldn't figure it out. The episode Major Boobage for example had multiple phases. After the idea, they did R&D when possible for months to see how they could do the art style they wanted, after they realized it's not possible in Maya and required traditional hand animation they hired a bunch of contract artists and it took 6 or so months to complete the heavy metal scenes animation process. The animating process using Maya is pretty interesting and i believe it predates pretty much all of the 2D tools like toonboom. They have their tools and pipeline down so it works. Basically all the characters are a 2D billboard in a 3D space snd it's kinda like the paper pilot but way faster.

Yeah, hand animation isn't easy. However the episode Major Boobage did take about 6 months to finish because they also did traditional hand animation for the tripping scenes. They also contracted a bunch of additional artists to help.

@@Jaker788 the writing/storyboarding takes up a lot more time than the actual animation in these kinds of shows. the family guy animation is all outsourced and optimized for efficiency but south park does it all in house, just like they always have. though they have employed tweening early on in lieu of frame by frame to cut cost and time because shows don't really compete over animation quality these days.

@@env0x South Park animation uses Maya since episode 2 and there's no tweening process like hand animation in that. There's key frame animation in 3D programs like Maya, but the motion between key frame character poses are interpolated. There's no such thing as frame by frame or tweening in 3D in the way you're using the terms, that's only applicable to traditional hand animating. Only the Major Boobage episode actually needed to hire contract artists to do hand animation and that took 6 months to get through as stated in their commentary. And yes, other shows typically do bulk animation of a season and it's more streamlined, though it still takes a while to get through an episode worth depending on the complexity. The animatics that give the outsourced studio direction is animated in house for all shows, and oddly these days they're 70% of full animation instead of 1 frame a second or less and rough sketches and allow the artists to take simple direction and use their judgement.

@@Jaker788 yes they streamlined the process. i was unaware south park always did it in 3d. i thought they used flash or something early on. but the focus is less on animation quality itself because like you said stuff like major boobage take crazy amounts of time and that was just a few minutes scene. my point is shows like this typically cut corners on the animation department because animation quality isn't as important. the last show i can think of that really put a lot of focus into animation was superjail. and that show had basically no plot.

It was a $200 set at the time I think (idk) Released a decade ago. Hasn’t been a new play scale one (the smaller not ucs / not $500 set one) released since. So it’s $1000 or so usually(maybe a bit higher) usd now or $2000+ in other currencies because you can’t get one any other way besides the reseller market
