I did the same thing by retiring to Thailand this year. I could bleed cash in The States in retirement - or come here and have 5x the life that I would have had back there. I watch my money go so much further. I enjoy access to the beach and warm year round weather. I eat interesting new foods. I meet new beautiful & friendly people, both locals & expats, who have no agenda & who want nothing but joy in their day. I have nobody ranting at me about politics. Nobody is taxing the taxes on top of my taxes. And I am living on even less that you stated here - and doing so EASILY. What have I given up? Absolutely NOTHING. And loving it. I can't spend my money, it goes so far here.

I retired at 51 and while I still own my home, we rent it out while we travel for 6-8months each year. Even when you own your home, you still have taxes, insurance, maintenance, utilities and when you need a new roof or central heating and cooling system, that can be $25k or more and the amount of stress that comes with that is not possible for most people and keeps them from renting.

An alternative for some people like me is to live on a small sailboat. In the proper season I can move around to different places. I have been to about 40 countries through the years. I left Florida in 2006, sailed around the world and back to Florida in three years. Got another boat and left Florida again in 2010. Sailed almost all the way around and am now in Trinidad waiting out hurricane season. My monthly costs are about the same but do nor include the initial cost of the boat. I live in Australia with my Thai partner of six years but I can't get her to retire with me back in her home country shes an Ozzy citizen now. We go back to stay with her family for a couple of months every year but she won't retire with me there. Australia (Sydney) is just so expensive you can't walk out the door without spending fifty bucks maybe one day I'll convince her to return home enjoy your retirement.🙏🙏

I like how you show the little restaurants you go to. So you live full time at the bed & breakfast? You should explain a little how you do banking and health insurance, the mundane things of daily life. I hear that you now have to keep 20-30 K in a Thai bank as collateral? Which is not the end of the world to show you want to be a good citizen. Very interesting. Thanks.

Don't be lured to the northern provinces like Chiang Mai. There is a dry and hot season which makes it the world;s most pollution place for about 3 months from March to June. The heat is terrible. The smog is everywhere. Search Bangkok Post to see articles about Chiang Mai pollution. The rest of the year from July to Feb is OK weather and smog-wise. The south is much less polluted. Phuket is expensive but there are places like Krabi, Satun, Koh Lanta you are check out.

Question for you. What about your things that need a bit of security while you are out walking around? Do you have a safe in room? And important documents? I would think that you can scan most and upload to the cloud, but some you have to have hard copies, especially if you are doing a lot of border hopping. And a laptop. or other things. I have things that are hard to part with, jewelry, precious metals, S&W, tax documents, etc.. So what have you done with that sort of stuff? I traveled a bit for work in 2022 so I know I can travel with a carryon only. Just not sure about the other, and long term... with no 'house', as I will have to sell the house to fund it. No way I can stay in this house long term and not work till death because of the cost even though it's paid off. Too many things to do, maintenance, taxes, insurance, always something eating at the cash.

IF one has 400k house he can choose. He can do what you do. OR he can move to TN or NC or similar places. OR he can rent his house for 2K a month, and travel like you do. Making 6% after tax on dividends year after year is possible but not guaranteed. Plus- up to what age can one travel like this ? Will he be able to move/live back in the US some day when he gets old ? And, 24K might be fine today, but with inflation, it won't be enough very soon.

Something that saddens me in America is seeing people in their 70’s and older working at McDonalds or in some other job when you know they don’t have the energy or desire to be there. My grandparents retired at 55 and suffered no decrease in their standard of living. They were not investors, they did own their house. Things have changed so much since then.

@@WilliamFluerywhile it’s true that none of us escapes the consequences of our actions, it’s also true that in the US education system we’re not taught to think critically. I didn’t know logic as a discipline existed until I was in college. Combine that with the powerful media forces that shape what people think and feel they ought to do and it’s a recipe for short term pleasure over the rewards of delayed gratification. There isn’t any good (moral/ethical) reason that logic and financial acumen can’t be taught in our schools, and that media could align more with what’s in the best interest of the population, but a majority of people would have to know and understand that, which is difficult given the state of education and economic forces propelling media. It’s a classic chicken/egg dilemma. The bottom line for me is-I feel compassion for those elderly people who still have to work for minimum wage. Their circumstances I feel are due to lack of education rather than willful materialism. Also the boomer generation grew up in a time when Social Security was robust and economic conditions were more stable and affordable. So there’s that.

Another great video, thank you. Been wracking my brain trying to work out how to navigate the tax obligations for Thailand now with the new laws. Are you in Thailand more then 180 days per calendar year? Interested in your thoughts. Looks like you are there longer then 180 days. Also, your thoughts on the new DTV visa.
