Since 1580 until 1640. I don't mean to be rude, but it's embarrassing to read what you just wrote. I can tell you haven't read much about it. Also, you mean that the portuguese empire, now part of the spanish empire, became an enemy of the dutch. It's not like they already were and after the Iberian union magically they weren't able to fight them anymore because of the spanish empire. Also, attacking the portuguese territories was attacking the spanish king and he sent spanish soldiers to defend them. Finally, the war lasted a few years more after the two empire split up and the portuguede empire won the war. I'm not much into portuguese history, but I'm pretty sure the portuguede empire lasted much more after that war and for some time it was a military power to keep in mind.

Did you say that the portuguese empire was the 21st largest empire in history? Because that is wrong, it was the 10th. Also the portuguese empire was the first global empire in history (Portuguese empire 1415-1999, Spanish empire, as considered today,1492-1975). I am only saying this, because in the video you mention that spain and portugal were the first and second global empires implying that you were refering to them respectively (which would not only be wrong because of what I refered to before in the comment, but also due to the fact that spain didnt exist until de XVIIIth century).

Though as I stated on another comment I could understand why someone would mark the beggining of the creation of spain to the catholic kings (isabel and fernando), and to be honest when I talk about the kingdom after 1516 I already call it spain (even tough it was multiple kingdoms ruled by a monarch). Also having the canaries or possessions in the mediterranean sea isn’t a global empire. By the end of the xvth century the portuguese had territories in europe, north africa, western africa, subsaharan africa, eastern africa, in south america, asia, they had already explored parts of north america and were just a few years from reaching oceania in the xvith century. Furthermore 1492 is the date most people associate with the beggining of the spanish empire. I wouldn’t consider 1402 (beggining of the conquest of the canaries) as the start of the spanish empire, because, among other reasons, at the time there was not even a union between the crown of castille and aragon , it was just castille, and also because after starting the conquest in 1402 they would not expand into other territories shortly after (as the portuguese did after conquering ceuta). To conclude I said portugal was the first global empire not the first empire. Ps:Portugal also became an empire in the middle ages.

Some fun facts about Portugal's Brazilian colony: -For the first 100-200 years it was widely believed that Brazil was the Garden of Eden. Priests would travel to Brazil in order to go on expeditions in search for the four rivers of Eden, search for mythological creatures, catalog fruits and search for the kingdom of Prester John. -Remember that story about Columbus thinking he had stumbled into India? Well, there were actually pretty good reasons for the people at the time to believe that. One of them was that they thought that they found traces of Thomas the Apostle in the new world which means that Brazil had to be connected to India via land or be an island close to India. -Up until the XVIII century the most sought after stone in Brazil wasn't diamond, silver nor gold. It was jade. In medieval Europe it was believed that jade was the purest of stones. So, if they had found paradise on Earth than it was only logical that there should be a lot of jade deposits in Brazil. -Some explores would actively discard any gold they found prior to the gold rush in Brazil. This was so because the main expeditions in-land happend in the province of São Paulo and they weren't happy at all with Portugal's meddling in the local businesses. They'd rather search for natives rather than gold deposits and risk losing their autonomy. -That story of the world being flat and ending in a giant waterfall? That was a late invention in the epoch of the Renaissance as an attack against the church and the people of the Medieval Times (that's also where the term Dark Ages comes from). Their maps may have been flat but it was accepted that the earth was round and that there were unexplored continents still. -Brazil wasn't much interesting to Portugal for the longest time for many reasons. Well, Iberian Union is just a modern term for the thing. It wasn't really an official established country at all. It was more of a personal union, meaning different officially independent countries whose thrones were inherited by the same person so they were governed by the same person but were still different countries. Of course in reality it worked much like a country, just not officially. And actually Spain in itself is a successful personal union between the kingdoms of Castile and Aragon (and these were already unions of smaller and older kingdoms like Galicia and Leon) that eventually developed into a fully integrated country,and unlike all the other historic unions you mentioned, Spain is still around.

Catalonia wanted to get independent right after Portugal got independance but Spain didn't let them go because Portugal wasn't an issue for them on that time, actually if Catalonia and Portugal revolted at the same time they were now both independent.
