A side question. Do the Q travel to parallel universes. Been thinking of the voyager episode "death wish" where Quinn is bored because he did everything, been everywhere, and there nothing else to do or be or explore or discuss. If the Q don't travel to different universes, maybe it's something for the Q to do.
@charlestownsend92803 ай бұрын
If they don't it might just be a case of not wanting to mess with things on that scale or running into other Q or potential thrests that could challenge them.
@MahsaKaerra3 ай бұрын
The Q Continuum can certainly accurately perceive divergent events and parallel universes. The sort of thing that would prompt Q to throw the Enterprise D in the path of a Borg cube that one time.. As much to alert humanity to a specific danger as it was to set in motion the events that would prepare the alpha quadrant for another, much greater threat. Also, not only can the Q travel to parallel universes, they can carry other people with them. In Picard season 2, the allegedly dying Q takes the titular protagonist to the closest thing TNG ever gets to the mirror universe. Wherein Picard is a galaxy conquering warlord and Seven is the Confederate President.

After going over the alternate memories, changes he noticed, and so forth, he final notices a connection of changes to styles and fashions of late 20th and early 21rst centuries. Section 31, department of temporal investigations, and an unknown group had to debrief him and stop his findings from going public.

@mleadenham13 ай бұрын
I think the TNG episode S7 episode "Parallels," which established the multiverse, renders any discussion of 'canon' moot, since literally any possible story happed on some branch of the timeline somewhere or other. So STO happened, The Kelvin Timeline happened, Axanar happened, all the books happened, your cousin's brother's fanfic happened. That's why the terms "Prime Timeline" or "Prime Universe" more accurately reflect what's going on with the narrative than 'canon.'

@@RandomYT05_01 No, I disagree. I think Star Trek does a better job, because while it acknowledges that the multiverse exits, its rarely seen. Aside from the occasional foray into the Mirror Universe the Kelvin Timeline, or whatever the heck was going on in Picard S2, the Prime Universe remains the narrative focus. Too much emphasis on the multiverse would be distracting and remove the stakes from the primary narrative. Marvel, by contrast, tried to make the Multiverse itself their Next Big Thing™ and we all saw how that turned out.

My favorite Star Trek universe is STO. The stories are interesting and they constantly reference obscure episodes. For instance, in the Voyager episodes mentioned in this video, prime universe Harry dies and is forever replaced in the prime universe by his alternate. In STO the body of prime Harry is recovered by aliens, revived and goes crazy as his DNA is altered to turn him into one of the aliens. He actually serves as a villain before finally accepting his fate. STO also has you fighting the Terran empire and their version of the borg. Theres yet another universe where Seela joined Starfleet and the Iconians are allies of the federation.

Actually the first episode to play with alternate universes was the TOS episode the Alternative Factor in which two identical beings create the same tech that allows the passing between universes. But one being is made of matter while the other is made of anti-matter so when these two come into the briefest of contact it has universe shattering effects that would make both Thanos and Owlman jealous. The biggest issue Star Trek has is it's been done to death and it's incredibly hard to follow. I prefer the nice multiverse of DBZ prime timeline that we see and watch, Future Trunks timeline where the androids rule. the Cell's timeline where the Z Fighters are gone and the androids so Cell needs a time machine to go back in time or another universe to get those androids. And minus Lower Decks and Resurgence, I find I like less and less of new Trek for a multitude of reasons. Maybe if they had the ability to give us more episodes like Legacy Trek seasons there'd be a better balance sadly there isn't one in Disco era.

The ds9 episode kind of shows the inherent inconsistency of a multiverse with parallel histories. If Spock saw what happened in the ds9 episode, he'd postulate that the universe was a giant ancestor memory with multiple matrix like cyber-worlds with our actual bodies encased in titanium tubes, working on hyperspace math in giant Matrioska brains. 'It's the only logical conclusion.' Here's what I mean. The two universes were so aligned that their ships were the same and the uniforms are only a little different. They speak the same language without accent. They go to the same locations at the same time, beam down at exactly the same moment. So there must be some a force that holds the chaotic events that define history in near but not perfect alignment. And yet, twenty years later it's totally different. The empire is shattered but the federation is doing pretty okay. Where's that aligning force? And what does it say about free will? And I'm not criticizing the show or the writers or the plot. It's like criticizing star trek for having mainly humanoids. It's part of the kabuki. But the very premise of historical variations can be resolved. Maybe there was some divergence and because of Mirror Mirror our universes are tied together a like the doorway to the antimatter universe that the Lazarus twins settled in. But that's some serious mental gymnastics and similar enough to Marvel Phase 4 that it would be beyond cringe. It would have probably ruined that awesome ds9 episode if they tried, you know, like Loki. BTW I bet that after a year or so of pummeling each other, the Lazarus guys eventually figured out how to deal with their issues and they're thick as thieves now.

I always felt that from Enterprise on was a different time line or universe. Right in the first episode they rewrote how the UFP meet the Klingons. So different universe. And the JJ Verse is also a different universe. And possibly Discovery and Strange New Worlds is from that continuity- which explains the completely different user interface and layout of the ships. Definitely not the same time line as the Original Series. Could also explain why the stories drifted away from social political themes to a human drama TV show. Simpler idea for a simpler audience?

That's a good split point for a mirror universe. Another one is In A Mirror Darkly and First Contact. During the movie, Cochrane states outright he built the ship for financial gain. In the Enterprise mirror universe episode's opening credits, we watch warlord Cochrane shoot the Vulcan in the face and storm his ship during first contact. We can surmise that was the original timeline and the events of First Contact and meeting the crew from the future altered the timeline.
@miker40163 ай бұрын
@@MichaelRaineyI like this theory. Picard and crew spend a good amount of time telling Cochrane and Lily how great the future will be IF he makes the warp flight and makes first contact. These people were desperate and coming out of a third world war. They had nothing to be optimistic about and would definitely mug some aliens for personal gain until they heard about this utopian future where they have statues and schools named after them.
@silversonic13 ай бұрын
Wesley WAY oversimplified everything. After all, the "Prime" universe/timeline, while defined by the actions we see on screen, isn't necessarily the same universe at any given time. After all, you have episodes like Parallels where Worf originally comes home to a surprise party, but because of his multiverse hopping and how he returns, he winds up back before returning to the Enterprise and Troi cancels the party to spare Worf additional stress. The universe was changed. It may be minor, but is it really the same universe after as it was before? And that's not to mention that the universe where Harry and Chakotay sent a message to the past to save Voyager still exists. Not timeline. Universe. It still exists. It has to. Otherwise the message could never exist to save Voyager. The message from Harry to Harry wouldn't exist. Admiral Janeway wouldn't have been able to cripple the Borg. The act of traveling through time is a decision that would create new quantum realities. And because you have two universes so tightly woven together, such as the "Prime" and Mirror universes, the Mirror CAN AND WILL BE AFFECTED by these same quantum realities, making matching Mirror Universes to go along with them. Long story slightly longer, time travel affects the multiverse and you don't always return the the universe you came from.
@jimwu85323 ай бұрын
Having a multiverse is a fun idea, but obviously it's a lot to deal with so we get to watch mostly events in one universe, otherwise it'd be too confusing to watch. Imagine a season of 12 episodes, 10 of which were from different universes? What are we even watching then? Star Trek 1h shorts?

I have never been a fan of the multiverse in storytelling. Often times it feels like a lazy way to introduce stakes without affecting the status quo while the consequences are completely swept under the rug. "Oh no, important character #4893 has been killed! Whatever shall we do? Oh wait, it's actually #4893 from a parallel reality, all is well.", nevermind that the character did die and there's a reality out there that needs to live without him now. It somehow manages to feel cheap and completely psychotic at the same time. Edit, Case in point: The Episode Parallels killed LaForge and blew up that array purely for shock value.

This is the problem for modern entertainment writing. Multiverse is a lazy way out of the emotion of killing off key characters. Wolverine is dead? No he's not. Tasha Yar is dead? No she's not. And when they are able to travel in between universes, what's the difference?

What about me typing this comment, are there hundreds of thousands, if not billions, of multi-verses based on how/what I type?
