You should have been allowed into the mosque (during visiting hours). Whoever stopped you from entering must not have been educated enough. I went to the mosque about a month ago and saw a few tourists inside. They were at this bit at the main entrance where tourists can enter and see the interior of the mosque. Your pronunciation of Kampong Ayer was not bad. Thank you for the video. It was nice to watch.

also just to explain when you were visiting some buildings, i think it was closed at 2pm instead of 5pm (the regular time) because its during ramadhan time. but if you wanna visit again in non-ramadhan time, feel free to reach out and will help you with tour around brunei.

Emily, during Ramadhan, if a muslim is caught eating or drinking in public, they dont get arrested. They will be summoned /pay a fine. I wouldnt call is RUDE if you have a meal in front of muslims during the day. It is just us respecting the muslims observing their obligations during ramadhan. One more, dont rely on CNN alone. The US embassy is here in Brunei and Im pretty sure they can tell you the DOs and DONTs

Brit here, been living in Brunei for nearly two decades. Some of the 'Rules' you quoted are a bit, erm, over-emphasized and to be honest, not really enforced. Brunei is a Moderate Muslim state. Women are allowed to run a business, own property, drive freely. In other states such as Qatar, Saudi Arabia, UAE...women enjoy much limited freedom and people have fewer rights than muslims here. Also, in those states, as a single woman, you would risk breaking the law, sharing a bed and apartment with a single guy, whereas here, as you can testify, nobody bothered you at all. You Tuber Josh Cahill, who does Aircraft reviews, he was surprised by Brunei too: as a gay man, he was very surprised to be allowed to share his hotel room with his partner, without any issues! In fact, Brunei is considered a haven for LGBTQ community. There is a LOT of misinformation about Brunei in the western media, unfortunately.

And one more think, if you are in your house, or close area, you're allowed to eat and drink,,no one will arrest you😅 it just a rules to respect most people who are fasting.. As a Bruneian, it is true that our rules are there but they aren't completely enforced even towards the Muslim population to a degree. The homosexuality thing, yeah Brunei is not strict on that either because there are actually many gay people here so generally, locals don't care as long you behave yourself. Anyway, it is very nice that you visited our country so terima kasih.
