The absorbing man is definitely underrated. And in the comic where he absorbs gamma from the hulk and he holds the giant rock over his head. The hulk reverts back to banner and he lost the gamma strength. So he did absorb the gamma but he couldn't keep it without the hulk.

AM's powers are pretty inconsistent throughout comics. At times he can permanently maintain power that he has absorbed, and other times he needs to constantly pull from the source. The range of his power is also dependent on the writer; most of the time, he has to touch something in order to absorb it, but sometimes he can absorb from a distance.

People tend to sleep on Creel, but this dude is totally broken. This guy currently's on the Gamma Flight roster, and wears an a wedding ring made it of Adamantium. So when ish gets thick, he just automatically absorbs the ring and it's a wrap for whomever he's fighting. He was always one of my favorite villains, and now that he [& his wife Titania is] are good guys, the bad guys better run. Now as for strength levels, originally he was slightly stronger than an ordinary human and just under Cap/Black Panther level lifting over 800lbs but under 2 tons. But after years of mutations, his base level strength is (roughly) 10 tons, but possesses the potential for limitless strength, depending on what he absorbs, which is why his wedding ring is Adamantium. Now his wife Titania possesses vast superhuman strength and originally had She-Hulk level strength class lifting 85 tons, but currently Rogue originally didn't have superhuman strength. It wasn't until she fought Captain Marvel (Carol Danvers) that she absorbed her powers of flight, nigh-invulnerabilty, and super strength giving her Ben Grimm level strength (60+tons). But she got a severe power boost and strength increase after she fought, absorbed, & permanently kept Wonder Man's powers and strength, bringing her to her current level which is class 100, lifting WELL over 100+ tons because Wonder Man also class 100. Like the Absorbing Man, people tend to sleep on Rogue, but that chick is a whole ass problem, and OP AF! If I'm constructing a team, I'd make sure she's one of my heavies aka "bruisers".

The only way absorbing man has been stopped is through sheer plot armor and heroes getting new powers like silver age superman. First that comes to mind is Thor suddenly being able to turn the ground into helium, and somehow forcing absorbing man to absorb it. Why? How? Because the writers couldn't let the villain win.
