Fabric glues aren't meant to hold weight. They are used to hold hems, small tears and small holes closed. I personally use fabric glue on the stitched repairs I make, primarily in jeans. Putting the glue over the stitches helps keep the thread intact and holds the repair better. There is also iron on interface that you can use over the stitches. Love your videos!! ❤

TYLER THANK YOU FOR ALL OF YOUR CONTENT. I WAS EXCITED TO WATCH THIS VIDEO IN PARTICULAR. I'VE WORKED WITH THESE GLUES, AND MANY MORE, FOR 30+ YEARS. LIKE OTHER COMMENTERS HAVE MENTIONED, CONSUMER GRADE GLUES LIKE THIS ARE MEANT FOR USE WHEN FACTORS SUCH AS TENSION, COMPRESSION, SHEAR, BENDING AND TORSION ARE LIGHT TO MEDIUM. WHERE THEY WILL HOLD UP BETTER WITH SOME OF THOSE FORCES AND NOT OTHERS. I ALWAYS TOLD MY CUSTOMERS THAT USING A FABRIC GLUE IS NOT A LONG TERM SOLUTION AS THEY WILL NOT HOLD UP TO WASHING OR HEAVY USE. MOST CONSUMER GRADE AIR DRY GLUES ARE PVA, POLYETHYLENE, POLYURETHANE AND CYNOACRYLATE, EACH OF THOSE HAVE DIFFERENT PERFORMANCE IN DIFFERENT CIRCUMSTANCES. THE THING ABOUT FABRIC GLUE IS THAT IT MUST BE BOTH FLEXIBLE AND STRONG ENOUGH FOR IT'S INTENDED USE. THE ONE TEST THAT SURPRISED ME WAS THE GORILLA GLUE ON LEATHER. I EXPECTED PRETTY CLOSE RESULTS FOR ALL OF THE GLUES YOU TESTED EXCEPT FOR FABRIC FUSION, FABRIC FUSION IS HIGHLY FLEXIBLE AND DOES NOT HOLD UP TO SHEARING WELL AT ALL. IF YOU EVER REVISIT THIS GLUE TEST I WOULD BE INTERESTED IN SEEING ALL 5 FORCE FACTORS TESTED!

I think the problem here is that youve put a single dot of glue on a thin sheet and then tried to pull it apart. Not all fabric glue is made for making a hard solid patch between fabrics. For example... you could have tried superglue and it would have been a much stronger connection but the material would have been hard brittle and ruined. Fabric glue like liquid stitch are supposed be used in a line and allow a more flexable less hard, natural movement of the fabric when dried.

Depending upon which fabric glue you use and the fabric, some fabric glues are actually meant to aid in sewing, like in a hem. Strength in a lot of fabric glue usages isn't important because you're gonna be sewing right over the glue loint anyways. Look at it this way, when 2 pieces of wood at a corner, you wouldn't just glue it and leave it, you'd glue it then screw it.

I think a better test would be to pull the material not in that direction, but across it's surfaces. Because clothes aren't normally pulled in that direction, testing it's strength by peeling them wouldn't be as accurate as trying to pull them apart across the surface. Also, try this same test with the leather, but instead of using the finished side, use the rough side. Glue works better when it's got a rough surface to grab on to. It's like the difference between gluing a flat surface and gluing a sanded surface. Great vid, I love these types of videos!

The glue should be applied to a cleaned sample with a uniform masked area and rolled on with equal weight. This should ensure a more consistent surface area and equal thickness. Glue put on too thick can fail more than a thin coat and greasy fingers can also compromise adhesion. Two tests stand out for fabric application, shear and peel stress and testing both is a good idea. Also, some glues may have different cure temperatures and failure temperatures worth comparing. After one month, your glues may havedifferent results as well. Back when I was an alarm technician, I used a combination of marine grade goop along the edges and zig zag across the middle. I would fill the gaps with super glue gel, apply pressure and fasten, weigh or tape down for 24 hours. This method was the hardest to remove for what I used it on but I can see similar results working on solvent cleaned fabric.

The thing about fabric glue on fabric is it allows flexibility of the fabric without the stiffness. Depending on the area, like a hem around the bottom of pants or inside seam of leg/crotch, how much strength is really needed for those areas. If croch area are tight fitting but close to the genitals, do you really want something that dries hard/irritating the sesitive area even with underwear on? Now if its a zippered area then yes use gorilla glue. It will last longer n put up with pulling up/down motion several times. I want to stress that glue was only meant for temporay fixes. Sewing is much sturdier, more comfortable, n lasts longer. Edit to add: fabric glue is also washable, meaning it wont disappear/wash out n replying the glue. Edit again: re apply, stupid spell check.

Marine glue, used for aquariums will withstand wadhing. Super glue or other fast adhering adhesive dabbed in evenly spaced dots in-between can help hold the fabrics together without making the whole bond surface stiff and give time for the slower curing adhesive to bond without delamination issues. Super glue does not like a low pH. Prepping the super glue areas with a high pH water drops and drying enough to allow penetration while keeping other areas bone dry for the other adhesive will likely create the strongest bond. The areas where the glues overlap will be fine and may be stronger due to cross-linking.

glue is not intended to withstand the force direction you used in your test. if you use 2 strips of material and let them overlap in the gluing area, then apply the force you should see much higher values from all 3 of the products. (like you would apply a patch to a ripped trouser) And since its fabric glue, you might want to use it on the coarse side of the leather strips or at least sand the surface.

But what effect does each glue have on the material (like discoloration)? Or washing the (glued) fabrics in a washingmachine?
@DanR67932 жыл бұрын
Now try the same test but with contact cement. I use contact cement on leather projects, usually gluing the rough sides together, and some tapping with a hammer to help "set" the bond. If gluing the smooth side of leather it's best to scuff it up a bit to help the cement/glue penetrate the leather and give more surface area to bond to. I've never tried contact cement on fabric before, so it would be interesting to see.

You're too hard on yourself man. Don't let the little stuff get to you. For what it's worth, you're a smart and inquisitive guy. A lot of people are just zombies going thru life, not asking any questions. At least you have the gumption and the ingenuity to test these different thoughts. Much love bro. (I made this comment because he called himself an idiot after messing up the glue in the beginning, but he's downed himself a lot in his videos.)

Be cool if you tested different dry wall anchors. The ones you screw in claiming they can hold 75 pounds.

Can’t knock the glue testing. I will never forget the super important lesson I learnt from this channel. I used to think there was no need to clamp materials together when you glue them as I thought it didn’t add any strength. I was shocked by the results and will never not clamp again.

Great to know bc I need to glue fabric over fabric on a lamp. That tip is perfect for folding edges to make a flawless seam. Do you have a fabric spray adhesive demo? I need it to spray a decorative fabric over the white lamp cloth. Thx

I need to do a project with some of this stuff. if you want to do another one of these i have a request. could you try gluing fabric to a smooth piece of plywood? burlap in particular, i need to know if it will hold up to water (its for a fishtank stamd), if you can see the glue through the fabric, and how well it actually stays on there. video idea for you, useful information for me, win win

Thank you so much for this video! This saved me so much time and money. Can you test what kind of glue would be good for glueing fabric to wood/bamboo?
@justme0022 жыл бұрын
Why would you glue the grained side of the leather instead of the flesh side? The grained side is what you would want to see anyway. It makes zero sense. I could see maybe flesh to grain, but grain to grain is bonkers. Also, the glue feels like "rubber or something" because it's glue specially formulated to flex with the cloth.
@lewisyoungs78802 жыл бұрын
You said it holds as well as bubblegum, it would be good to see you test how sticky sweets and gum are on fabric compared to the fabric glue.
@christopherwescott5512 жыл бұрын
You should definitely rough up the surface of the fabrics so that the glue can get a better hold of the material. That would give you a more accurate reading and better overall test results.

Some fabric glue is not intended to create a permanent bond. It is used instead to adhere pieces in order to be able to sew those pieces together uniformly.

Fabric glue is designed to do emergency temporary fixes, and for creating a bond to make sewing seams and hems easier. If you are using it for anything else, it's going to fail. It will never survive the washer and dryer.
