How Strong Is the Engineer in Prometheus ? Exact Strength Calculated

In this video I wanna talk about one interesting detail in Prometheus regarding the Engineer. Most of you remember the scenes in which the awakened Engineer punches and throws the crew members across the room with no effort.
That made me wonder how strong was the Engineer in Prometheus compared humans, more specificaly, how strong was the Engineer’s punching power compared to strongest human punchers like mike tyson and olympic boxers. In real life, not a single human could make another human fly a dozen meters across a room just by a single punch, so the Engineer must be incredibly strong, but in this video we’ll find out his exact strength level.
I also wanted to thank you guys for watching my videos, I know I don’t post very often so make sure to hit the notification bell to not miss videos when I release them. I’ll be also posting a few Predator videos about the upcoming movie so stay tuned.
To determine Engineers strength we’ll need some physics formals, but don’t worry they’re pretty easy to follow.
There are a few ways to calculate power of a punch but since we can only rely on our observations in the movie, we’ll stick to theb relatively precise method that only requires a few measurements.
Fortunately, we can use the one of the Isaac Newton’s laws that says that force or punching power in our case equals mass times acceleration.
so to estimate how strong was the engineer, we need the mass and the acceleration of people that we punched.
Accroding to laws of physics the force exerted by the engineers hand is equal to the force required to throw the crew members across the room in the way we saw. So instead of estimating the mass and speed of the Engineer’s hand which we don’t know anything about, we will estimate the same parameters regarding the crew members which is much easier.
So if we find the force that was need to send Ford and Weyland’s guard flying across the room, we will find the force of the engineers’ punch.
We can ignore planet’s gravity because all crew members move pretty much like on earth.
We’ll first find the force it took to throw the guard across the room. The way the engineer moved his hand to kinda throw jack is very similar to an uppercut so we’ll use this to estimate Engineer’s punching power.
For our formula, we need the mass and the acceleration of his body after the punch.
Judging by his weight and the fact he is in military , we can assume that he carries a significant amount of muscle which wieghs more than fat, so his body weight would be around 200 pounds, then we add the weigh of the costume another 50-70 pounds which results in the total of about 260 pounds.
In the Prometheus script, the sleeping pods are described as 20 foot long and by looking at the set photos it’s clear that another sleeping pod would fit in the center between the the two. So the platform is about 60 feet in diameter or 18 meters. In the movie Weyland’s bodygaurd traveled the distance of about 10 meters on the platform and a few additional meters between the platform and the wall. By measuring the time it took him to reach the wall, his speed comes to about 14 meters per second. However we need the acceleration so by diving 14 by the time he reached that speed after the punch, we have that the acceleration equals 56m/sec
By applying the formula the force is mass times acceleration we get that the force used to throw the guard across the room was 14 560 pounds which is quite a lot.
Mike Tyson, has one of the hardest punches in the world which is 1440 pounds, 10 times weaker than an Engineer’s punch.
If we do similar calculations with Ford, we get that the Engineer's punch was 11 450 pounds of force which is very high.
The Engineer is probably way stronger than we calculated because he didn’t use his force to the full extent. Despite the fact that he hardly put any effort in his punches, he hit at least 10 times harder than one of the strongest human punchers.
So that makes us wonder what are the The Engineer made off so that they can generate such extreme amount of power. In the script the awakened Engineer is described 13 feet just like ispace jockey, but on the screen he seems to be about 8 feet.
His strength would be more realistic if he was 13 feet, however in both cases he is extremely almost unbelievably strong for his size considering the fact that humans share most of their genetic material.
However, it’s possible that his bio suit came into play and significantly increased his strength.

I don’t think your calculations for the engineers strength was correct. You can use mass x acc. = force, but you used m/s with pounds which aren’t compatible units since pounds technically measure weight which is a force. If you convert the weight from pounds to kg, you get about 118 kg. That times your acc. Of 56 m/s^2 equals about 6,608 Newtons. Converting that to lbs gives about 1486 lbs of force. That’s quite a bit lower than the 14,000. Also I think when measuring punches, duration of impact plays a part in force calculations since force is a function of time, so that doesn’t mean that Mike Tyson punches as hard as an engineer just because the calculated force is similar to Mike’s actual force. A better calculation to use would be F=mv/t because that includes impact duration. With that formula you get (118 kg x 56 m/s)/.25s which equals 26,432 N or 5942 lbs. so more like 5 times stronger than Mike Tyson

Agreed. I also want to comment that gravity does play a part as well. Its possible that the gravity on the Engineers' planet is much higher. This means that their bodies would have evolved to deal with that higher gravity. The gravity on the moon is much lower, they by making the Engineers super strong (This is the same thing that happened when man walked on the moon). As the ship is part living ship, there is the possibility that the ship would have turned the extra gravity off to save power. Now as the ship detected a smaller species in the hull, it examined them and created a breathable atmosphere for them and gravity equal to the moon. Coming out of cryo the Engineer would not have been that strong to stand due to muscle atrophy. My Two Cents

To be fair you showed us the effortless power of an Engineer, that is how strong he is without putting any effort, but what would be the strength when the Engineers is pushing to the maximum. That would be throwing a human as far as he can, not just throwing them effortlessly. Also comparing his strength to human strength just because we share most of our DNA is not exactly a good reference since Gorillas also share most of our DNA but they are by far much more stronger.

I think the engineers are divided into casts. Like warrior, priests and so other. The species of the engineers reached to a high advanced technology and bioengineering (genetic engineering and so on) so they could strength their warriors genetically modified them or maybe it's the exosuit which gives him the strength or a mix of both?

you need the acceleration in ft/s/s to use it with pounds (you'll get lbf) or use kg with m/s/s (you'll get N). Also, I think Tyson's punch force is in lb not lbf, so you'll need to convert the calculated force to equivalent mass (just divide by the planets gravity, which is probably similar to earth's gravity).

well they can have just higher intensity of muscels, they may come from world with higher gravitation. But high intensity of the muscle which is common even with several humans, Some humans do not need to be so beefy to have smae strenght as others, and even they have lesser weight. Just to say Engeniers probably have so high intensity of muscles that human will hav problem to even get trought them with cold weapons. Yautja veteran had hard time fighting the engenier and we are talking about yautja who was able to kill aline queen on his own.

After watching some of your vids about Prometheus, theories of evolution and species direction etc. xenomorphs supiror advances species dying out, this kind of stood out and is weird af. Xenos creates engineers to save he species from dying out, due to in ability to reproduce. Hence why engineers stated they can not reproduce (basically like a drone). David understands what engineers are doing, thinking he knows where they go wrong kills them out and creates the eggs, claiming his creation is perfect (I assume via method of them being able to reproduce). Fast forward to alien resurrection, mad scientist creating alien with a functional set of sex organs and a womb. He then claims it is perfect, given a fully functional reproduction system. Could talk about an Android being there to stop his “abomination” as it is not right, but that’s a bit wild of a speculation. I do see from your videos what you mean, also see it full circle when you look at the big picture. Everyone mess with the alien DNA trying to make it more “controllable” sophisticated and adding reproductive system. Could very well see the emergence of what could have been the true xeno civilisation.
